Although I have no idea what it is your researching, or even what all thoes TLA's mean, I can still provide you with a little recommendation.

SGI/IRIX in my experince is great for crunching numbers, we have an Origin 200 dual CPU with a gig and a half of ram supporting the load of 3 full time 3d designers. Granted SGI has the advantage in the graphics arena, but in our situation the rendering aspect is handed off to x86 workstations (but thats a whole other ball of wax)

One other thing to consider is SGI's wonderful support. We recently had a failure that crashed the server, SGIs ESP program notified them of the crash, and within a few minutes a tech had called us to schedule a service guy to come out and replace our motherboard/ram/cpu with all brand new equipment. Since we're an out of the way town, the soonest we could get is the next day.

On a side note, from what our service tech was saying most of @Home's customer proxy servers are(used to be) Origin 200's. :P

If you do choose to go the IRIX route, you might look into the Origin 300 line, from what I hear its supposed to be the next step for the 200 series.

If you are still considering, and need any real-life experince feedback or have any questions, drop me an email.

  10. MP3Linux on A LAN-based Democratic Jukebox? · · Score: 1

Actualy I undertook a project along these lines a while back minus the democratic part. MP3Linux was basicly just a cheap name I came up with at 3am. Did bunches of neet things, you could finger [string]@mp3box and as long as their was only one match it would kick it up next in the playlist. Or if you were feeling adventuresome you could telnet to it on a specific port and browse though a menu listing and try to find the song of your choice. It did have the notable feature of only queueing songs for playing, so people wouldnt fight over which song was currently playing.

Once I get home from work I'll try to dig up the harddrive I had it installed on. I axed the project since I didnt have any drives larger than a gig to deticate to a jukebox machine.

Also, I think they have something like this over at ID Software. jukebox.idsoftware.com if my brain serves me correctly.

I live in a medium sized city, and thanks to Qworst DSL has pretty much been driven out. With the high cost of equipment, its not even looking like a viable business opertunity anymore. Is there something i'm missing? Has it hit market saturation? Or is it just the fact the telco wont let us have more than 2 COs?

I spoke to a long haul truker about a week ago, who in additions to some of his friends, take their computers along with them in their semis. Suprizingly enough they leave them on all the time too(!) A few useful tips I picked up were:

-Use the older NEC monitors over other brands, supposedly they are a little more forviging and wont degaus every few seconds like others

-Quantium drives are better about seeking and reading when the drive is moving about, normaly I dont recommend quantium, but from this guys personal experinces with drives going out once a month I would

On a side note, I might also recommend laptop harddrives in your PC, over in our electronics department we have some laptop->IDE converters, if anyone is interested I can track down where they came from.
