The technical process of making people lose all sense of reality and simply consume whatever is most successful at telling them "buy me because I'm cool, and you can be too" is pretty straightforward to describe, but actually quite complicated to implement. It's called marketing. Apple is a marketing company that also makes electronics, they are quite adept at their core business, such that people don't even realize that they are pretty mediocre when it comes to their secondary, and in fact believe them to be the absolute greatest of all time.

Think about it: Macs and iPods crash all the time, they require special software which is incompatible with other hardware to operate, they cost a ton of extra money, they are not measurably better for any particular use or application than competing products, and yet they still have legions of fanatical users who couldn't even imagine using something else.

Once you take off the sex appeal, Apple's actual devices don't have much going for them, yet they still dominate because the marketing is so good.

All the people making comments like the above are just clueless. Get your head out of your ass, for Pete's sake. A ton of people using Apple computers are intelligent geeks (some probably a lot intelligent than this clueless poster above) who don't care two hoots about being cool. A computer (be in a Mac, windows or linux or *nix) are a tool. Use the one that fits you the best. I don't get why people waste their time belittling people who choose Macs over their chosen platform. It is not that big a deal. If you do not want to buy/use a Mac, just don't. Nobody cares. I use Windows, linux, Solaris professionally. A couple of years back, I bought my first mac. Having used the "evil mac" for a few years, I don't get what the big deal is. It does everything that one would want to do with a computer. I do not get the reason why these haters get all riled up when Apple (or Mac) is mentioned in any article. I do not get the hatred.

You couldn't figure out how to make a phone call with an iPhone? You think there is some problem with the "music capabilities" of an iPhone? Give that millions of people are able to use the iphone well as a phone and as a music player, I think the problem might be you..!?! I don't even know what the last sentence means. But do you whine and complain that an xBOX360 game does not work in PS3 too? If AT&T is paying the CEOs and the senior executives a BIGGER salary and HUGE bonus,... or distributing it to the shareholders, this is THEIR mistake. They should instead use all the profits they are making by the massively new HIGH PAYING customers and build a lot of infrastructure. If they have to double or triple their network capacity, they should. I thought that was the reason for the iPhone exclusive deal and consequently getting the ability to poach customers from other networks. If AT&T failed to capitalize on this and build their network, it is the mistake of the executives and they must all be fired...

    Rubbish...!

In total OVERALL music sales... for today only... you're right. Now sit down for a moment and think.... Thank you! It is nice to know you agree that TODAY iTunes Music store is NOT a monopoly in overall Music Business.

Look at Nielsen SoundScan.. here's some breakdown [siliconvalley.com] It is disingenuous to suggest that the SOLE reason for decrease in Album sales is due to Online Sales. Guess what, if the music is not good, consumers are not going to run out and buy a new CD.
Additionally, if there is ONLY 1 or 2 songs that are good in the entire CD, consumers will prefer to buy that alone instead of forking out > $14.00.

Additionally, as someone in an earlier post mentioned, why is it expected that the Album Sales will increase every year? I buy music only when I hear something that I like. So it could just be an indicator that the music these days are trash.

As you can see, album sales are DOWN worldwide (4.9% decrease), and internet sales are UP(65% increase). Take that trend out 5 to 10 years. Statistically, you'll see that Compact Disc will quickly be overwhelmed by digital media sales. And of that growth - Apple has 82% of the market captured [macworld.com] from Job's own mouth. He he he.. ROTFL .. haha ha. You are funny, do U know that??!?!
Jokes apart, I think it is possible that Online distribution of music might increase too. Till there we are in agreement. But to suggest that 5 - 10 years from now iTunes will become a Monopoly, is the most disingenuous arguement I have heard in awhile. :D
First off, How do you know Apple will still have 82 % marketshate in Online Music Download 5 - 10 years from now?
What if Yahoo or Urge or MS Marketplace or emusic or MP3.com or a bunch of others take a few percent marketshare. It is within the realm of possibility.
Next, One cannot treat a market leader like a monopoly coz you feel they might become one 10 years from now. 10 years is a long time. And didn't you now, Apple is DooooooOOMed and/or beleaguered.

Monopolies are defined by sales in a MARKET.. In the online music market, it's a monopoly. If sales continue their current trend Apple will have a overall music monopoly in a few years time. While I am sure you would like to define "Market" to suit your arguement, I don't know how many would agree with you. Here is another perspective. Music industry sells music. Some of it might be Cassette, some LPs, some CD, some DVDs. To this, online downloads is an additional distribution model, which at the moment is less than 10 % of the entire market. The market is the music Industry. And iTunes is in NO WAY a monopily in the Music Industry.

Now 10 years from now if CDs and other disappear, AND if Apple has 90 + marketshare in the sole music distribution market, I will agree with you. Till then, please do not spread FUD...

Once developers have become comfortable writing games on it, they can introduce it on their desktop version at some point in future. The point is, there is potential there, if Sony wants to break free from Microsoft.

And they can sell higher priced hardware (Vaios etc) using the same OS, which means that games written for PS3 that does NOT use PS3 specific hardware feature would work on the Sony PCs.

If Sony had bought, BeOS, which I hear has low latency and was made from the ground up for Multi-media, they may have had an OS which is mostly done. They just need to tune it for their PS3.
