I guess so and a Mac or an Amiga was pretty useless in a studio until quite a bit later when the Protools finally got their act together on the Mac. The Amiga software was crap for serious sequencing when compared to things like Cubase. When a decent Protools did hit the scene on a Mac that combo was really expensive and as you needed good synths and multitrack tape to get any quality anyway the Atari was still the choice of many for ages. The Mac eventually moved into the pro studios and the Atari continued to rule in the home studio for a great deal longer. Macs for sound engineers, Atari's for musicians
To real musos the Atari was the only way to go for quite a long time, anything else was just a toy for, as you say, playing games. well that and for office people to dick around with while you got down to the serious business of getting stoned and producing music.
When I was using one in a studio about the only thing online really was ye olde Bulletin Boards and there wasn't really any video worth watching on the cruddy screens regardless what you owned. Funny isn't it? The Atari was usually viewed by those outside of the music biz as a games only machine and just a toy but to those in the biz it was the only machine that wasn't a toy. Horses for courses I guess.
The onboard audio was irrelevant in the Atari ST driven studios. The ST was used to drive all the midi devices. We used to have one firing all manner of sythesizers and samplers which where synced up to a big chunky multitrack reel to reel via SMPTE. It was a remarkably reliable system capable of serious work. And all done with a 3.5" floppy and no hdd.
I'd like to see a top line game played this way in Australia with our crappy connections and if the mandatory internet filter gets adopted it will be less possible. Living in the Aussie bush I'd be lucky to be able to play the old pong game.
Strangely enough though, Tesla did postulate that there was a connection between the two and that electromagnetics could be used to manipulate gravity. Clever man that Tesla.

In the most part I'd tend to agree with you but I have seen it used well. There are some performers that use it to keep their fans in tune with what they are doing, where to find them, how to pick up some free tickets, even how to bring them food (Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls comes to mind).

Who said it should always be for free? You asked if the poster gave away his work for free as if that was a ridiculous concept and nobody could ever do such a thing. I was pointing out that many people do exactly that. True artists create art for the love of art and if somebody pays them for it as well that's great but if pay is the only reason he does it then he isn't an artist.
I don't see why I should get paid again and again for the same days works. In the past you were buying something that had to be manufactured (ie a pressed record) but now it's just theft because the product costs nothing to produce. Btw, pretty much every musician I've ever worked with has lived in poverty on the dole for most of their career - they accept a small subsistence wage from the government and in return entertain the community. These days with gst most even tell the government how much they earn and their dole is adjusted accordingly. Some don't of course but either way they provide a valuable service for a very small cost. Perhaps I'm just lucky enough to live in a country that doesn't think people that can't earn a decent living deserve to die. A decent social welfare system makes sure we all eat - that's the reality here. It must be a sad place to live where those who don't (or can't) earn enough to survive are condemned to death or forced into a life of crime. I think I'll stay where I am, I don't like the sound of your reality.
