I am - answer: yes, yes I do. Not everything has to be about money, art certainly doesn't. Once you start to create art only for money it stops being art. Just look at history; many many great artists made jack shit in the way of money but still created some of the greatest art ever and contributed greatly to culture.
Current copyright laws keep art out of the public domain and never become part of the shared culture. Disney just pushed copyright out in the US again the other day. They are a prime example of how copyright has been perverted to serve a rich few at the expense of everybody. Copyright has become just another tool used by greedy corporate scum so they can be paid again and again for the same day's work. and they don't even have to do the work. Good scam huh?
Let me take a wild stab in the dark - you're an american and a republican yes?
Region locking was declared illegal in Australia; it restricts free international trade. You can also just use a decent player on your pc (like all the ones used by linux systems)
And aren't the laws doing just a bang up job of stopping it? Prohibition is such a great solution, just look at what alcohol prohibition achieved - marvelous.
Now that alcohol is regulated instead of illegal it's easier to buy heroin than alcohol if you are a minor, the corner drug dealer doesn't ask for ID. Good thing too, that alcohol stuff is bad news. It's so much better for the youth to be on heroin and make smack dealers rich; I hate publicans (or whatever you americans call those self-opinionated, jumped up drug dealers that own bars).
And it's great how making prostitution illegal has stopped that too. Wouldn't it be terrible to have that regulated? Think of the poor pimps; they wouldn't be able to look after their girls so well would they?
But how would the private jail industry make any money if they couldn't fill their buildings with drug dealers? And how could the government cull minority groups from the "democratic" process if they don't have laws to target them? They need these laws don't you know?
Then the answer to that is no, he still thinks it's stealing.
The point I was making is that he isn't the only one that owns rights to that music and I'm sure if it's the first time he was filesharing he wouldn't have turned off uploading so he would be "stealing" off his comrades in the same way that robbing the bank you use is taking more than your own money in the vault.
Now you're talking. Think of the freedom we'd all have if nobody could use the "think of the children" excuse because the children were all safely locked up in a bunker.
I am intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
"Sony says they have suffered many lost sales, suffered damage to their goodwill and other damages to their market."
Sony have goodwill? With who? I'm not surprised people would rather get their music via TPB than Sony. Getting it from Sony hasn't worked out that well in the past now has it. Rootkit anybody? So who exactly is the criminal?
But how is paintball mode helping to condition children for a life in the military? We need more gore to desensitise them to it so they will sign up. Typical communist FOSS plot to undermine the strength of their enemy!! Forshame.;)
I think you are underestimating the influence of the GPL in the success of GNU/Linux. Knowing that some slimy corporation wasn't able to take your contribution, close it off and sell it made the whole deal far more palatable. There's no way I would contribute without the protections offered by the GPL license and I know I'm not alone in having that attitude. The only thing worse than working for a corporation is working for them for free.
I've been using KDE 4.1 and it's not a lot better. I'm a long time user of KDE and I don't like the direction it's taking. The main reason most people used kde was because it wasn't dumbed down. So much for that idea! You're quite right, KDE4 is KDE trying to be Gnome. I have KDE 4.1 and Gnome on this and I find I'm prefering Gnome. It's more flexible - imagine that?
Here's hoping that a fork of KDE3 is made and most of the devs move to that instead.
I never thought I'd live to see the day when I would read about any sort of discussion about whether or not the US should continue to use torture. The fact that this is even being discussed as an issue is disgraceful to an outrageous degree. My country is on the wrong side when we back the US in their wars.
Linux/GNU does have a standard chassis - it's called the kernel. On top of this kernel people build a system. I suppose following your logic all cars should use four stroke reciprocating engines too? How am I supposed to design a spark plug if those moronic car manufacturers insist on building diesels? And don't get me started on rotary engines, Mazda should be locked up. How dare they make such a small engine that hammers so hard? I can't use any of the valves from my ford wrecks. It's outrageous!!! How dare they try to be innovative????
Except of course that if you do that you will attract a lot of novice users asking "what's a shell?" Oh, wait a minute, it's ubuntu, they already get that don't they?;)
I say you should do this as an intelligence test; If she is too stupid to use ubuntu throw her back and do an apt-get upgrade. Or better still: apt-get remove girlfriend --purge, then delete that repo from sources.list before she adds dependencies, removes the dependencies and uninstalls half your shit
It happened during the period between when Britain abandoned the Catholic church and the reformation. During that period many, many people suddenly realised that if what they had been told to be an absolute truth was actually false then it was likely all religion was false and atheism thrived. The reformists murdered lots of them when they went on their rampage.
I have no problems at all with photoship on linux under wine. Dreamweaver works fine too. GTA4? So it's a games machine you want? Perhaps what you really need is an xbox.
It's been quite a while since I haven't been able to get drivers for stuff, most of them were already there and required no hunting around at all. In fact I've had to hunt around the internet for drivers for xp installations for equipment where my linux installs just worked far more frequently. And then there's Vista - it won't play most avi's unless you hunt up something like vlc so it's no worse than having to find out how to install codecs on linux. If you are using ubuntu you don't even have to do that. And, well, lets face it, vista is the worst thing M$ have produced since dos4 and they want me to empty my bank account for the drm ridden pos when I can run debian for free???
You raise me a pc mag application, I'll up you the ante with thousands of apps in the repos that install with a single click, and they didn't even cost the price of a magazine. I need broadband? I do ok on an isdn connection but you have to fill your tank and drive to the shops (again, with wallet in hand) or hand out your credit card details over the net and still have to download some bloatware or wait for the postman.
It isn't linux that isn't ready for the desktop, it's windows.
This issue is indeed becoming a major problem, my spam folder always holds more email than my inbox by an order of magnitude and sometimes important emails get missed because they incorrectly get filtered as spam.
The australian govt outlawed spam here but only when the spam is directed towards other australians (the govt then issued their own spam the next day but that's another story of it's own). This of course doesn't help at all, now australian isp's only host spammers that ply their filthy trade overseas. No help at all.
Surely it's time that the UN passed a resolution to outlaw spam across the board. They pass resolutions for far less important things than this. How much energy and resources are expended on spam? Surely this contributes to the pollution of the planet enough to warrant action? It certainly degrades the efficiency of international communications. Iirc there was a paper tabled at the UN but nothing has come of it. Perhaps somebody knows more about this?
I also would hate to see every halfwit using linux/gnu. All we need is a big enough marketshare for the corporate slime to see a financial benefit in it to produce stuff for both winbows and linux/gnu. I shudder to think what the forums would be like if every cretin out there suddenly switched over. Imagine all those spoilt little mummy's boys screaming their demands that they deserve somebody else to fix it because they are too busy tossing off to porn.
I prefer scooping up the cream and letting microsoft make money off the scum from the bottom of the vat. Hey, that's all M$ deserve isn't it? I think linux is just about right at the moment; easy enough that anybody with a brain that isn't too lazy to use it can drive it but just hard enough that the lazy and the stupid are scared away. The usage is growing enough as it is - full steam ahead, carry on and avoid the idiots on the icebergs.
Wife and kids? So this is short term advice?

So where is this magical Ferrari cloning machine that you allude to?

We don't know what Gates' DNA sounded like because it opened up a gateway to hell that swallowed everybody in the room.
Sony have goodwill? With who? I'm not surprised people would rather get their music via TPB than Sony. Getting it from Sony hasn't worked out that well in the past now has it. Rootkit anybody? So who exactly is the criminal?
If it wasn't microsoft it wouldn't be done in this way so no, people wouldn't be as angry because there wouldn't be anything to be angry about.
But how is paintball mode helping to condition children for a life in the military? We need more gore to desensitise them to it so they will sign up. Typical communist FOSS plot to undermine the strength of their enemy!! Forshame. ;)
The government that decided to follow the US into Iraq WAS kicked out. The prime minister even lost his own seat. wtf are you on about?

Compensate for something? You haven't met many cocaine freaks have you? Just look at the man's eyes, he's not overcompensating, he's tweaking.

All trout are fish but not all fish are trout
