  1. He needs a different class of character. on LOTRO Dev Talks About Bringing MMOs To Consoles · · Score: 1

A character with a teleport to a safe spot solves that problem, though I suspect that the issue isn't really the "quick save". Depending on the game many sorts of magic users have that. WOW provides it to everyone at level 1.

Personally, I like a high quality permanent defense mode like invisibility or a "tree form". It is also a "quick save", but perhaps better described as a "pause" button. You do have to deal with where you froze if you don't get back before your friends leave.

Every class has its advantages to the player, whether it is the ability to take a bio-break or to respond to a parental summons. You choose what works for you.

  2. Re:We already have Photoshop! on Google Funds Work for Photoshop on Linux · · Score: 1

I was pretty satisfied by Gimp, but if there is something missing you feel you really need it would probably be easier to get it added to GIMP than added to Photoshop. Even starting from scratch now to learn how to code would be easier than motivating corporate policy, but a donation as big as a license fee in the right place might do the job.

My biggest complaint though, is the extra click to gain focus in a window on a Mac. If I forget about it, I think a control has been activated when it isn't and cause myself momentary confusion. Maybe, someday, I will look more closely at whether that is fixable, or just inevitable with X11.

  3. Size isn't everything on How to Deal With Stolen Code? · · Score: 1

Many years ago, I "sold" an application, with source code, that was less that 20 lines of assembler. Strictly speaking I got an extended warranty on a product my company had purchased, because I had written it to diagnose the problem with our purchase. When I asked my boss whether I could give it to the support guy, he asked me to get something for it. It was easy to negotiate extended support from the guy it had helped.

I was very proud of that hack, and agreeable to "selling" it, but my real motive was to show it off.

The whole copyright law situation as it stands irritates me because it seems to interfere with creation rather than serving the supposed intent of encouraging it. Laws need to be consistently enforceable to be meaningful, and detecting violations that invisibly use parts and pieces doesn't seem to be. A "whole" work in some sense, like a short story in an anthology or my little hack is relatively trackable. I can't propose an exact rewrite of the law, but there seems to be something wrong with it.

  4. SMS is not IP on Cell Phones Presage Future of Non-Neutral Internet · · Score: 2, Insightful

SMS uses the, rather limited bandwidth, control channel for transport. That puts a lot of pressure on the kinds of applications that can be supported.

Look at the price per megabit for messages outside a package to get an idea of the cost (k$).
        Not the same at all!

But some cell carriers are far from neutral on IP as well. I'm not sure they are clear on how that affects their market share.

  5. What else? on Boycott the Gold Farmers? · · Score: 1

I love these topics, because it shows how differently people view things. My take is that it is a policy issue for the game operators, and if I don't like it I will move on.

People's differences are just what drives the market for the farmers. My friend may not want to grind, but wants to keep up, while I might find the grind relaxing. He can buy gold, and I can tease him about it.

I sure would like to see some games with different economic models. Is a pure communist game even possible? How might iit work?

  6. Chinese Gold Diggers? on The Call Girl Character Class · · Score: 1

One problem with politics is that there needs to be some return for competent people who work in the field. Otherwise it gets dominated by thieves and obsessives. Right now the thieves are winning.

  14. WOW got a lot right on Gold Buying - Time Saver or Cheating? · · Score: 1

One of the thing I like about WOW was that a new char makes money at about the rate they can spend it well. When I twinked an alt it didn't help all that much.

I have never felt the need to buy cash, though I wouldn't complain about someone who did. I thought I would to buy a mount, but reduced spending, more ah time, and a loan for a few days kept me from having to wait or buy cash.

To my mind, that is a key design feature they got right. I have played other games where some one factor became an issue that drained the fun.

YMMV I know some classes are more of cash hogs than what I picked.

  15. GSM vs CDMA interference on Study Says Cell Phones Can Interfere With Planes · · Score: 1
