I think the last article similar to this one was also about Qld. And Conroy is in Vic. So it looks like it's just a handful nutjob ministers, though most of us in Vic are more worried about the current govt's spend like there's no tomorrow then tax the bejeezus out of us approach. The next election will be either this year or next, though it's unlikely that we'll be able to kick out the govt so soon despite their utter incompetence.
WebOS beats the pants off Windows Mobile. I'll hold out for Intel shipping a MeeGo tablet however. N900s are fucking awesome.
N900s don't run Meego though. (Well they can, but only a shell right now). Meego has a completely different feel to Maemo. That said, it's probably a safe bet that Meego will be equally open/powerful.
It's time you guys faced up to the fact that the experience of using it is truly awful
Care to back that statement up? IMO, the interface of the N900 is far superior to that of the iPhone, being far easier to use (especially for multitasking), while still being extremely easy on the eyes.
The reason there are so many clones is that they're excellent practice for someone learning to write games. Tetris has very simple mechanics, doesn't require fancy graphics, and is easy to write. A Mario/Pacman clone often follows because they have a much higher level of complexity (Mario's scrolling maps, Pacman's AI). I would imagine that similar analogies apply to films. Originality can only be used once you've developed the basic skills.
In my opinion, I think both devices have such a lead on the iPhone it's unlikely that it will ever catch up.
Both devices have an immense *technological* lead on the iPhone, but they're way behind in terms of marketing. Everyone has heard of the iPhone, but how many people have heard of Android?
Clearly you have never used Opera Mobile. I have it on my N900, and GIFs render fine. As for other forms of dynamic content, the main reason I switched to it is that it executes Javascript way faster than the builtin browser (e.g. Slashdot is now usable).
Aside from older hardware that clearly needs it because of sheer lack of RAM, is there even any reason to recommend/enable swap by default anymore? Modern machines come standard with around 4GB of insanely fast RAM - isn't that enough?
I don't know about other OSes, but Ubuntu needs it for hibernation (and requires that it be a partition, not a file). Complete waste of 4 GB if you ask me.
Maybe we should introduce some sort of 'nerd/geek grade' as part of the profile then? A numeric score displayed next to the user ID that would indicate how much of a geek one is, and possibly have a bearing on the initial score of posts. The score could be determined from a short quiz/test, which would span numerous fields. The only caveat would be that you couldn't include too many questions about older technology - a lot of younger geeks (myself included) weren't even around when the Amiga first came out.
You've got to start the conversion to 100% electric somewhere, plus the transition to renewables can happen in parallel.
You're never going to get 100% electric - even now we don't have 100% (unleaded) petrol. Electric might work in some places, but in others (e.g. Australia) where everything is further apart they just don't have a long enough range.
I'm guessing that most didn't care. Casual chatting, etc. isn't exactly stuff you'd get too bothered about if someone was observing you. In fact, given how crowded lectures are I'd be more worried about someone shoulder surfing then someone sniffing traffic.
In theory they're typing notes or recording the lecture or something.
In practice, I suspect it is more of a distraction than anything else.
Speaking as a current uni student, both are true. When interesting/important stuff is being covered, most people use them for notes. When the material is less useful (examples, anecdotes, etc.) or just plain boring it's easy to find heaps of screens with Facebook on them (or in my case,/.). Currently the tech users seem to be a minority (~10-30%), but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it reach a majority with less than a decade.
While you might not be able to imagine it, those who do know how to perform an administrative task both from a terminal and from a GUI often find that doing it from the terminal is more efficient and more reliable.
While that may be true, I sincerely doubt that a terminal would be more efficient then a GUI for any thing other than basic file manipulation on a Windows system.
This is an incredibly dangerous move on the Pirate Party's part though. Until now, they've remained separate from the Pirate Bay and they've achieved a pretty decent following. But if they get lose in court as the Pirate Bay's ISP, then it will damage their reputation and they could lose a lot of potential followers, ones who aren't hard core pirates but were leaning towards them because of their policies.
A normal guy wouldn't rate a woman 0-10 in his head, but rather a "yes" or a "no",
I don't know about that, fuzzy logic is a pretty good approximation of we consider seemingly boolean conditions like hot/cold or attractive/unattractive.
Hit them where it hurts: as an equivalent to imprisonment, prohibit dividends and fine them to the amount of all profits generated over a specified period.
Hey, if they can get a decent amount of computational power out of it, it would probably be economically feasible even if you had to run it in a fridge.

a desire to emulate corporate software development, which many FOSS developers admire for reasons known only to them and God.
Probably because the major FOSS developers are in corporate software development.
VPN + BitTorrent - why waste a perfectly good protocol?

The article doesn't say anything on this note, but I'd be surprised if they outlawed fictitious images in Japan, given their thriving h-game industry.

So what? As long as they're performing the jobs well, why should their personal views matter?

Interesting approach to getting Slashdotters to RTFA

Given your sig, I'm going to take that with a grain of salt...
Are you suggesting that they shouldn't bother?

I'd say 90% is a bit high - there are probably quite a few people (like me) who have simply replaced their TV with their computer.
I'm guessing that most didn't care. Casual chatting, etc. isn't exactly stuff you'd get too bothered about if someone was observing you.

All this shows is that Limewire users are more likely to download their client from a third party than utorrent users.

Hello plausible deniability...
