"VoIP calls are often routed over the public Internet, and details of those transactions can be spied on by outsiders"
It compares voip to email and talks of spam and phishing. Intercepting email is not how spammers get email addresses. They get addresses posted online and lists of addresses gotten from people who have used the addresses to sign up for shit. I have an old email acct. that is loaded with spam because I have had it posted online and signed up for stuff. I also have an acct. that is only used for email to people I know and it gets no spam. Intercepting phone calls to use the info for spamming would be too much effort per spam and ruin the profitability of spamming. Spamming works when you can get a crapload of addresses and send a ton of mail dirt cheap. If spammers had to intercept emails to get addresses to build their lists I don't think it would be a problem.
All of this business about voip security may be valid for corporations but if someone wants to spend the time/effort to listen to me order a pizza they can have at it. I use an old cordless anyway so if you want to sit outside my house with a scanner you can listen too, but I really don't care. If you have nothing better to do than listen to my calls to my mother you need a life.
I am not saying I agree with the RIAA business practices, they are pretty shitty. Are shitty business tactics in the same ballpark as "hanoi Jane" or Hitler? I might even classify the RIAA as evil, but as far as I know they have not committed acts bordering on treason nor have they committed genocide. Let's keep some perspective here Hitler, WOW
Just skimming through my library looking at some artists on small or indie labels that are available on Itunes. I found Andrew Kerr, Jabe, Kris Delmhorst, Susan McKeown, and The Waifs available at Itunes. These are just examples I found looking through my library. Itunes may not be indie band central but they are not that bad if you look around. I have found some good stuff there.
Now I can fast forward through 200 commercials on the Tivo insted of 3 or 4.
Seriously I would rather see companies trying crap like this, you have to want to watch the full version. I like this idea much better than trying to find ways to MAKE you watch the commercials. This plan only subjects you to 1 second unless you opt in.
so far the abuse has been allowed by both other branches, in some cases abuses have been with the assistance of the other branches. Who passes laws to limit this? The people doing it.
Even if you elect people who are less abusive of the power I doubt you are going to see any elected officials vote to reduce their own power/influence.
I was ready to jump in here with something insightful about democracy and voting. I then realized that we would have to convince a majority of the population to stop voting based on religion and look at issues. I don't know if that is possible anymore. Don't believe me, go hang out at a Wal-Mart for a while. Look in the parking lot at how many cars have Bush stickers and Jesus fish on them. Look at how many elected officials are pushing ID as science.
Only if you tell them. I am not required to tell my boss where I am going on vacation. I would have serious issues with it if I was required to report what I did on my time.
I don't exactly know why they are thought of as so cool. I think part of it is the ipod really is a pretty good product, maybe not the best but I have one and I like it better than the Archos player I had before it. I think the biggest factor is the ipod, to many people = mp3 player. I know several people who have other brands of mp3 players that call them ipods. Apple has gotten the ipod to the point where the name is nearly synonymous with mp3 player, and this will carry a lot of sales.
Music subscription plans "should" have killed ipod and itms.
One of several "ipod killers" with better features, cheaper, gapless playback etc. should have killed ipod.
How many times have we heard this item will kill the ipod?
The only one who can kill the ipod is Apple, or maybe if for some reason it stops being cool.
What about OS X? I mean on a cd, not a preinstalled system. If I buy a Tiger cd from apple to upgrade a machine could I wipe it out and put that cd in another Mac? I am always saying Apple is better. I wonder how they stack up on this? Anybody know right off?
I admit, I have not sorted through a windows eula in a long time. Is the bit about using the OS on "this" computer only on preinstalled systems or is it on all copies. It doesn't seem like it would make much sense on a copy bought seperatly. I can see on a preinstalled system it might say only valid on this system, but on a retail cd it would have to say valid on the first computer you insert disk into only? I am not doubting what you say, but I would hope that if I bought a windows cd that it would be pretty hard for them to say I couldn't uninstall and reninstall somewhere else. I may have to go look at an eula later today. Unfortunately all I have is a university volume license version. I don't have any instals from a retail cd.
We all know that there are several legitimate uses for "naked" pcs.
I have an old pc with a legit. copy of windows. If I buy a new one isn't it ok to remove it from the old machine and install it on the new one? I bought a license to run windows on one box, it shouldn't matter which box I run it on.
TFA mentions companies with volume licensing.
I want to install any available non-windows os.
I want a new machine but don't want the latest windows version due to compatibility issues with some old software I want to run ( I do still use one old program that will not run on xp)
Microsoft is just not satisfied with collecting the $$ for legit. windows copies they want you to pay again and again for the right to use the os even if you shouldn't be paying again.
We have all seen the stories of the RIAA filing lawsuits against people who don't even have computers or have never downloaded. Why not find a college student being sued who either didn't do it or a case where it would be extremely difficult to prove they did do it (downloaded from a internet connection in a dorm or something) and turn around and sue the RIAA for harassing the poor kid and driving them out of college with the legal bills. You could ask for potential future income. One could calculate the amount lost by using the average income of a college grad vs the average non college grad over the course of an average life. I imagine that this would be a large number. The headlines would be great "RIAA drives young student from college, costs them 50 bajillion dollars in future earnings".
Sounds good to me, maybe cause them to at least investigate prior to filing lawsuits, probably not though.
I have never used it. I like Apple because it just works. I have had a used G3 Ibook, 15" G4 powerbook, 3G ipod, 5G ipod and a 512MB shuffle. I have never had the first problem with any of them.
I compare my Apple experience to my GF and her HP laptop. She asked me once why I bought the powerbook when it cost me quite a bit more than her HP. I explained to her that when I open the PB it is ready to go in about 2 seconds and unlike her HP I never have to restart it because something is frozen, I never get the BSOD, I have never taken it to the "geek squad" to have it reformatted and reinstalled due to a virus. It just works every time. I know my day may be coming with the virus thing but as of now all of the OS X issues that I have seen require a stupid action on the part of the user (opening files, having safari auto open "safe files" etc.). The whole part of it just working right with no hassle is worth the price to me.
I guess if I had a point it would be that if the hardware isn't broken you don't need service/support because it works. The hardware may not be any better, I know Apples will break but compared to all of the problems I have had with the various PCs that I have had over the years my Apples have always worked flawlessly. You can point to service, fads whatever, but I am sold on Apple because it works.
Ipod=mp3 player to a very large percentage of people. I saw a guy at work who had another brand player, someone asked what it was, he told them it was a (insert brand/model, i don't remember) they get a blank look, he says it's like an Ipod they say "oh, ok". I can't think of any other product that has this effect to this degree. The earlier post mentioned Kleenex, Kleenex has Puffs. Coke has Pepsi. Legos has Mega blocks. To most mp3 player=Ipod. How many other players can you identify by the earbuds? I can't with any others. It would be very hard to beat this even with a far better player.
I think the only one that can kill the Ipod is Apple itself, if it does something really stupid. I don't see that happening any time soon.
and hook it up to a generator maybe we can finally open up that wormhole to Atlantis. I bet they will build me a car that produces gasoline in the tank next! hoo hoo I can't wait.

someone else already suggested this, although they suggested it sarcastically. I want to see someone do it.
