Think I could win the Judge's Prize by trying to write the worst program in the competition? I think it could be really interesting to try and write a program that loses at pousse as soon as possible or that actually 'optimizes' their NPC into something with a bigger codesize that runs slower.

No, I'd just skip it, deselect the beastiality checkbox in my user preferences or think it was the final straw and move to kuro5hin. Anyway, I don't believe Taco has an obligation to post what he thinks the /. readership is interested in. I think he should select what he's interested in and maybe then make a subselection of what he thinks would interest the readers. IMO the personality of the authors is what makes slashdot interesting and when you take that away it loses its charm.

Then again, I'm not easily pissed :).

You say you set your 486 up as a cable-sharing gateway using FreeBSD. As I also want to setup a 486 for the exact same purpose, I'm exploring various options. Possible candidates I have in mind are Debian and OpenBSD. So, I have some questions:

    1. What about speed? Do you know how the various BSD's compare to linux when serving as a gateway on a 486? What is your experience running FreeBSD on it?

    2. Why did you pick FreeBSD instead of OpenBSD in your particular situation?

I am not a native English speaker, so I'd like to ask what you mean by 'emergence'. Of course it's in my dictionary, but that doesn't help me much in this case. Do you mean the emerging of a property in a system that isn't in any of the parts seperately? If so, then *shrug* indeed. If not, enlighten me.

...it's hard to see how a level of anything could introspect,...

Introspection's just meta-thinking: thinking about thinking. Thinking is the processing of external input. Just feed the results into the machine again and we have introspection as I see it (I am open to different points of view, though).

There's also a problem with equating consciousness with unpredictability.

Hmmm, you're right. I wasn't making sense there.

What if this "conciousness/soul/whatever" you are talking about were just a certain level of complexity? Maybe we should just call 'consciousness' the level of complexity where we can't predict anymore what the response to certain input will be. We might want to exclude windows from that, though :-).

How would you downscale 'consciousness'? E.g. is my dog conscious?

Could you maybe give (an) example(s) of what you would describe as a property of 'conciousness/soul/whatever' to clarify things a little?
