Think I could win the Judge's Prize by trying to write the worst program in the competition? I think it could be really interesting to try and write a program that loses at pousse as soon as possible or that actually 'optimizes' their NPC into something with a bigger codesize that runs slower.
No, I'd just skip it, deselect the beastiality checkbox in my user preferences or think it was the final straw and move to kuro5hin. Anyway, I don't believe Taco has an obligation to post what he thinks the/. readership is interested in. I think he should select what he's interested in and maybe then make a subselection of what he thinks would interest the readers. IMO the personality of the authors is what makes slashdot interesting and when you take that away it loses its charm.
Then again, I'm not easily pissed:).

I just heard on the news these jackets are available in the more expensive Dutch clothing shops. That's great. Now I still can't afford them, but at least I can't afford them around the corner!
Nope, they mean worldwide revenues. Quoth the ZDnet article:
The U.S. software giant has two months to reply to theEuropean Commission's allegations. If it fails
to satisfy its concerns, the Commission could levy a fine of up to 10 percent of the company's
worldwide revenues, although such a large fine has never in practice been imposed.
More important, how would you explain staying up all night mumbling to your computer to your (soon-to-be-ex)friends?
Besides, I'd rather not talk for houres on end.
O, and and I know another one: try shouting move left, jump and shoot at the same time to your computer when playing UT. That'll teach you... something.
*sigh*, get over it! This kind of thing was funny, euh..., maybe the first 50 times, but this unsubstantiated MS-bashing on/. at every opportunity is getting old very fast. If you don't like Microsoft, fine! I don't care and I don't want to hear.
You say you set your 486 up as a cable-sharing gateway using FreeBSD. As I also want to setup a 486 for the exact same purpose, I'm exploring various options. Possible candidates I have in mind are Debian and OpenBSD. So, I have some questions:
1. What about speed? Do you know how the various BSD's compare to linux when serving as a gateway on a 486? What is your experience running FreeBSD on it?
2. Why did you pick FreeBSD instead of OpenBSD in your particular situation?
3. Any other suggestions? I'm perfectly willing to spend time learning something new, but I really don't feel like installing and configuring more than one os.
Hate to tell you this, but over here in Europe potatoes are *not* green. They're brown with maybe some green bits growing out of them, but that's all. Overal, they are definitely not green.
Just a quick reply to show I check up on my posts.
I am not a native English speaker, so I'd like to ask what you mean by 'emergence'. Of course it's in my dictionary, but that doesn't help me much in this case. Do you mean the emerging of a property in a system that isn't in any of the parts seperately? If so, then *shrug* indeed. If not, enlighten me.
...it's hard to see how a level of anything could introspect,...
Introspection's just meta-thinking: thinking about thinking. Thinking is the processing of external input. Just feed the results into the machine again and we have introspection as I see it (I am open to different points of view, though).
There's also a problem with equating consciousness with unpredictability.
Hmmm, you're right. I wasn't making sense there.
intuitive notions of consciousness
That's just because these 'notions of consciousness' are expressed in bodylanguage similar (read: understandable) by humans.
what if a technological system given the same level of complexity could demonstrate similar properties ?
What if this "conciousness/soul/whatever" you are talking about were just a certain level of complexity? Maybe we should just call 'consciousness' the level of complexity where we can't predict anymore what the response to certain input will be. We might want to exclude windows from that, though:-).
How would you downscale 'consciousness'? E.g. is my dog conscious?
Could you maybe give (an) example(s) of what you would describe as a property of 'conciousness/soul/whatever' to clarify things a little?
Personally, I wouldn't mind if all my comments were reprinted. I would like to be notified though. Maybe/. should add this as another option... Maybe/. should allow automating things like this using perlscripts... Maybe I'm just insane...
I'm using Netscape 4.72 and I can't M2 either. I've tried to contact Rob about it, but haven't gotten a response (?yet?). I just tried a chmod 666 ~/.netscape/cookies, but that doesn't make it work either. I haven't had any problems with other sites as to this time, but maybe that's just because I'm too afraid of the real virtual world to leave/.:-).
I wouldn't mind corporations having a lot of my information if it was passively used
Even if you don't mind details about your personal habits being publicly available, remember that that information is worth Money. A corporation wants it and you want to sell? Fine, they can buy it from you.

You have no clue, because I have two.
The code is on the back, so just tell them you never noticed it.
So let's just hope Taco steers clear of the beastiality for a while longer :-).

I wouldn't want operators smoking videocards anyway, but that's just me.
I'm assuming they mean reevune from EU countries.

The plan is not a 10% fine. The maximum fine they could impose is 10%.
ESR proclaims God finally 'gets it'.
The people of Atlantis already did this. Where did you think al the penguins came from? Duh!

... sat down, closed his eyes, and typed whatever random thoughts came into his mind. He slapped them together and presented it to the world ...
This is called 'fiction'.
Have you tried running ldconfig as root? (Not that I'm sure it would be usefull here, but that's what I always do when I'm in trouble with libs.)

Why would you do that? Just to influence their statistics? If you don't accept their cookies, they can't track you at all.
As long as it's easy to disable, I have no problem with them tracking users. If you're concerned with privacy, you just disable it.

You can also do something like chmod 444 ~/.netscape/cookies when you've got the cookies you want.
