Yes you might be right on many levels. I get quite frustrated at my job, but I really do give good customer service, even those people. Assuming they do not see the micro expressions come across my face before I gain composure and put on that fake smile.
On some levels I think some of my point stands. I worked in the higher end web/tech industry for 15 years I did not have to deal with very many every day people. I would bet 'some' people that read this site also do not deal with the "general public" all that much. I mean I knew on paper "14% of people in my county lacked basic prose literacy skills"[1], which is about 1 in every 7, but without dealing with this in person, it was just some number on paper. "25% of people in the USA's IQ are below 90"[2], while not a perfect measure of intelligence, still says something. Beyond that people in the USA seem to lack in logic related skills (math), compared to the rest of the first even second world. We are the stupidest nation dollar for dollar[3] there is. I just find it sad and frustrating. I doubt you can solve people using bad passwords without addressing some of those facts first.
But as you started I am talking about the left of the tail not the middle and you are very right on that end.
Most of the people (not here on slashdot, the rednecks I meet in my state of Texas) who think he should be strung up and hung have no idea what he actually released and assume from the news reports he is a rapist. So the 80% figure includes a ton of people who do actually know the facts
That's democracy for you. Aren't you glad we live in a republic that put limits on mob rule?
My only point was the people that make up the statistic being quoted do not generally do not even the facts of the subject the pollster questioned them about, particularly in this case in my area.
I do not necessarily think it was 'an attack' on the US, even if it was, the information he released was truth, nothing more. I do not believe they can stop the 'site' at this point, if somehow they did, there is several now to take their place. I think it is a good thing.
Whether it's the truth or not doesn't really matter. Most of what is being release was said or written in strict confidence between sets of people who understood only a limited amount of people would know about it. Think about it this way, suppose the cops wiretapped your phone suspecting you were dealing drugs with known terrorists. All they get is you talking about how your partner looked fat in the outfit they wore last night, and how you think one of your best friends have a drinking problem and he's becoming an ass. Nothing terribly bad, and all true from your perspective. Now lets say that a cop knew he was going to get fired for whatever outside reason and dumped all these tapes of you talking privately to certain people in confidence along side the road on his way to an interview for a new job. Now suppose I found them and posted them all on the interweb. Does the fact that they are all true make that right? Does it make it permissive? I mean ignore the fact that the cop acted illegally, I came buy them legally, and haven't broken a law (actually I have but pretend I haven't) and posted them for everyone, including your partner and friend with the drinking problem to hear and see. Are we good now? Well, what makes the difference if we are not? You might say "well, those were your communications, not the government", but it's the government who kept recorded them and kept them, shouldn't I be able to disseminate government information even when the communications help were regarded as confidential at the time?
We are not talking about private citizens, we talking Federal employees who are being paid and acting on our behalf, that directly effects every person in this country and many more around the world. The data here wasn't unknowingly tapped, they knew records were kept and many government officials (at least higher end ones) could read it.
The scenario you create here involves private citizens whos actions, have no effect on the rest of the world, nor are they paid or acting on the public's interest, who have an expatiation of privacy, etc. These are two total separate issues.
If this same cop in your scenario found out.. I was drinking on the job, in which peoples lives were actually in danger and he 'anonymously' reported it to my work, I think it would be the morally right thing to do. If I found out the cops did that, I hope I would have enough reason in myself to understand why he did it and accept it was the right thing to do.
Nationalism is not usually a good thing. Being mad that a group exposed all the secret evils of your government is not the right response, consider asking the government why they were doing these evils in the first place.
Would you be mad at me if I posted all your confidential communications on the interweb? Seriously, I mean if you knew all your conversations were being recorded and eventually made available to anyone- anywhere, would you phrase things differently, perhaps more
I live in the USA, born here, etc. I wish I had the balls Julian Assange does, he is a hero in my book. Most of the people (not here on slashdot, the rednecks I meet in my state of Texas) who think he should be strung up and hung have no idea what he actually released and assume from the news reports he is a rapist. So the 80% figure includes a ton of people who do actually know the facts. I would like to see the figure after you laid out the real facts to them, assuming them could understand or care about the facts. I am sure there is still people that would still disagree with what he did, particularly on the cable release. I understand and can accept those points, while I still think it was the right thing to do. I do not necessarily think it was 'an attack' on the US, even if it was, the information he released was truth, nothing more. I do not believe they can stop the 'site' at this point, if somehow they did, there is several now to take their place. I think it is a good thing.

Is it not more moral to ask your government 'why you do these terrible things, classify them and cover them up'? Than it is to blame the person for exposing them?
Last time I checked no person was directly harmed by the release of the cables, war logs or videos. No I have not read them all, only the headlines etc so far. Most everything in there was just things you expect to be said behind the scenes. Honestly the cables seem to reveal more about other countries doings than our own to me.
But I tell you what, there is no way I would ever leak shit to them or participate in that what so ever. Big brother is a scary thing when you piss him off. I might even check the Post Anonymously button before I click Submit, then again I know for a fact I am already on at least one little list with them.. screw it, whats another one. Doubt that would actually make me really anonymous anyway.
"if you refuse a breath test during a traffic stop, a judge is on site, and issues a warrant that allows police to perform a mandatory blood test."
Based on what? Your refusal to take one? That is not, any/enough probable cause to justify a warrant. I do not know all the laws, I doubt anyone does. It seems unconstitutional. Your going to pull over some other judge, high end lawyer or something and eventually one of these people will bring this to the state and if needed federal supreme court and win. Maybe I am missing something though. I am pretty sure if they also asked to search your car and the judge issued a warrant based on your refusal, it would be deemed illegal and overturned.
In my area we had local sheriffs riding around with game wardens (the people who enforce hunting laws, for you city folk), anyway they can more or less search peoples vehicles without warrants looking for people poaching (killing game illegally). The Sheriffs were using them as all access search warrants. They did it to the wrong person and the state came down hard on them.

Turner Diaries was a reasonable book, yes very racist, but I felt it was well written.. I tried to read his other book called Hunter and could not make it past a few chapters, too much racist ramblings...
As far as an On Topic post: I always wondered how much better PC gamers would score on games like these, I really cant see, at least on average, console gamers competing on anywhere near the same level.
I could see him trying to use those gestures to try to defend himself.
I just do not think it is reasonable to think anyone can play nearly as good with any of these current motion capture devices compared to having a keyboard.. DPS will drop, it will fail to pick up a gesture here and there, etc. I am sure this is quite fun and has it uses though.
Users are the ones picking those passwords and using the same password on their email, facebook & random site they had to create an account for.
Most all malware, trojans, viruses, etc are spread by user ignorance, lazyness, etc.
Users are also the ones that can not tell the difference between a movie file, music file or a executable program, thereby becoming part of a bot net, sending their passwords across the net to a 'hacker', etc. I mean Windows even asks if you want to run the program and they still click yes let it make changes to my computer. Users also are the reason there is no anti-virus installed in the first place. Users have no idea how to see what starts up with their computer, leaving all those trojans installed. Users are the ones that say Macs cant get a virus, not knowing that there are almost no virus made anymore, everything is a trojan, malware, etc which works perfectly file on a mac. I do not remember the last time I saw a virus in 'the wild'. Users are the ones that get an email that says "i love you" from I_AM_A_TROJAN@FAKE_DOMAIN.COM reads it and clicks the.vbs, exe, etc attachment. Not even mentioning the prince in that foreign country that died and left them money or the pills to make their penis bigger.
Most 'average' people have such a lack of understanding about how computers and software work they will not learn from their mistakes as well as people here think they should. They think the internet is something they buy. They have no clue nor do they care about the very basics of how the internet works, nor their computer. People forget x% of people can not read and this number is much higher in the USA than it is in most EU countries.x% of people have an IQ below 80 or 70 or 60. You might not encounter these people on a day to day basis forgetting how much of a problem it is, I know I did until recently. I was blown away at how ignorant and or stupid people are.
I work retail atm. I've had a family ask me if they had to buy a new Wii every time they wanted to play a different game. I've had a lady ask how to use a mouse pad. I have people every day thinking the internet, at least in some aspect, is something they physically buy. The MP3 players estimate how many songs they will hold, one 4GB one says 900, one says 1300, so they think the one that estimates 1300 holds more. There is no use trying to explain what GB means most of the time, besides the fact they do not care to learn. I have people still asking simple questions about home telephones, questions they should have learned the answer to in 1975. Im not talking about the new cordless ones. I often wonder how these people manage to not die of starvation, manage to make it to my store without getting lost, etc.
I had a theory that there is a coma ward close to my store where people are waking up after 20 years and wandering into the store. That was the only other explanation I came up with that justified most of their ignorance. You think I am being hard on these people? Put on a navy shirt and tan pants and go stand in walmart between the video games and laptops and see how long you last with your current ideas. Go stand by the music & movies and learn real quick, people can not read.
Wow you seem to miss the point. Microsoft is saying they will not certify any AO game period. Which means if they do produce a game anyway without getting approval from Microsoft they can simply be sued out of existence by Microsoft due to how the USA handles Copyright and Patents. The AO game publisher would have to use several things Microsoft "owns" to make the game run, or break the DMCA to do so. Take at look at what Nintendo did to Tengen over the same type of issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengen_(company)
Now if companies could simply make the game anyway and sell it legally, there would not be an issue. Who cares if Microsoft certifies the came, I sure don't.
I used similar methods to this to take down multiple ISPs back in the mid-late 90s. When you have enough traffic, you can pretty much choose what their browser does in the background and take down smaller ISPs... Thousands of unsuspecting website visitors all day long trying to load the biggest file I could link to on their server as an image 1x1 pixel or background to some table with a question mark and random trash at the end to cut down on caching. What worked even better once was using their own terrible high cpu usage cgi programming as the 1x1 pixel, that way their cpu was maxed out. It is funny what one pissed off kid can do to a whole ISP or site... Those were the days.
Of course this relies on them not being smart enough to remove the file, add simple apache lines in the config to block referral, etc. Last place that tried something similar to one of my servers had the attack redirected back to them using the apache config and redirects. It did slow my sever a tiny bit but theirs just stopped..
North Korea in its current form must cease to exist. North Korea is a country that needs to be invaded. Not to suit our (the USA) greedy interest, but to protect our allies and stabilize the region for starters. From what is in the "media" over the last month or two, it seems to be clear this is a very real option and is likely to happen.
I am not pro war by any means. I would love to see another realistic option.. Wait them out for another 10 or 20 years and hope nothing too big happens. Stop screwing with them, let them build all the bombs they want, give them the land they claim is theirs, that isnt, and wait for them to get stronger and hope they do not bomb an ally? I don't know much about anything, maybe I am missing an option.
Look at the satellite images of North Korea at night if you have not seem them, that is one of the most messed up things I have ever seen. South Korea all lit up, China lit up quite well, and darkness in between besides their capital..

Such a woman should spirited and playful, of high intelligence, though not necessarily formally educated, have spunk, class & inner strength and be able to think strategically about the world and the people she cares about.
I like women from countries that have sustained political turmoil. Western culture seems to forge women that are valueless and inane. OK. Not only women!
Although I am pretty intellectually and physically pugnacious I am very protective of women and children.

I have a jailbroken PS3. I bought the PS3 within the first few weeks of it coming out. I used it quite a bit the first few months, lack of games compared to the 360 really was annoying, besides the online part for the PS3 was pretty limited for a while also. It is much better these days.. Anyway it ended up collecting dust for a good while. I had not and did not intend to buy any game for it for well over a year.
I jailbroke, played a few games, got bored, and it collects dust again. Same for my Wii (I got bored with that within a week). Same for the 360. Im guessing same for this iPod touch soon.. Point is I doubt they lost any money. I had no intention in buying any games for their PS3 and had not bought any in well over a year.. I spent more time playing with emulators and things of that nature than anything else. I highly prefer playing on the PC when I can.. Now my Wii can play DVDs (I dont care that it does really though), emulators, and all the other nice stuff that...
I would have never bought a PSP except I knew I could hack it and get all the games for free. I would have never bought a Gameboy Advance except for that same purpose. Same for a few other systems. Same for that iPod touch..Same for the Android phone I will buy soon (not sure which one yet, leaning towards Galaxy S phones)..
There was an insurance file posted a while back. It is encrypted, no key provided. Most people assume it is the entire cablegate along with most everything else they have that has yet to be released.. We also assume there are at least a few people with the key and the ability to post it if shit happens.. (it could just be a bad porn though, we do not know since it is encrypted)..
Every T1 I ever saw around here had a whole class C (256 ips). On my T1 (that I no longer have) I managed to get 3 class C's by filling out that paper work with networks and servers that did not exist. Then on top of that the ISP assigned me IPs that were intended for Dallas routing not Houston, so they gave me 3 more class Cs for me to move to, but I never did, I ended up just keeping all 6 for a total of 1536 IP addresses when I could have done it with 8 or less. I did use all the IPs for a little project once, but I never needed them. Again I do not have this anymore lol.
Someone explain this? Everything else aside, I can not understand people buying their laptops. Maybe I am missing something. Every week Best Buy has one of the MacBook Pros in their ad every time on the same page or page before I see where I can buy 2 or 3 Sony, Dell, HP, etc Laptops with equal or better specs for the same price.
This week on the same page: Apple® - MacBook® Pro / Intel® Core2 Duo Processor / 13.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB Hard Drive $1499.99 Sony - VAIO Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / 13.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - Silver $799.99 HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Brushed Aluminum $599.99 Samsung - Laptop / Intel® Core i3 Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Black/Red $549.99
I can not understand that at all. If that MacBook was a Sony, HP, Dell, etc it would be like $499.99 in that same ad..
But they sell.. Is it a status thing? Is it people do not know any better or care? Is there something huge I am missing? I just took the time to get a price from Alienware.. Alienware - M15x / Intel® Core i7 / 15.6" Display WLED / 6GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive / etc - $1,599.00
So people are seriously buying that MacBook pro over that.. It makes my head hurt...
My secret was Xanax. It works if you do not abuse it.. I was prescribed as high as 2mg a day 3x a day, which was too much really. 1mg 3x a day is more than I need. I no longer need it though. I tried most all the SSRI meds none worked, most made things worse. Only thing I had that helped was Benzos like Xanax, ativan, etc.
The 'wipe' I did was a standard overwrite sectors with random junk program. I forget what utility I used but, I just put it on the highest setting and left it running. While I am not sure of how perfect I wiped it, I did well in the time I had. If they recovered anything it would have been pretty useless. But yes maybe it did not wipe the FAT or another part of the drive, when they attempted to recover files they recovered the junk data that the other program put there? That sounds very well like what might have happened. Best I could tell the files were random data, either by the program I ran and them trying to recover those files as you suggest or them attempting to destroy a hidden/encrypted file system.
Only thing is the files that were there were not the size of any files I had on the drive. Files I had on the drive were mainly 350mb with a few 700mb (oh wow guess what that was). Anyway the files they left were either 1GB or 2gb each and just had some random file names.
I formatted the drive and used it, obviously was not the brightest idea. I no longer use the drive this was years ago and it made it into the shooting range and got a few.22 caliber bullets shot through it. 22-250 seems like reasonable last step in data destruction.
I consider myself a little lucky that is all that happened, it taught me not to under estimate people like that. Every so often, no matter how small of a chance you run into people that know what they are doing, lol.
Got me. I can only guess what they were thinking and doing. I brought the drive with me to bring my friend about 1TB of... Well lets just say the *IAA wouldn't have liked what it was. Once we copied it to his drives I left one of those programs going to overwrite sectors, because I am paranoid. Before I left I just did a quick format NTFS.
My guess is they hooked it up, saw that all that was on (or at least visible) was a fresh NTFS partition. If they did a lower level scan it would have been gibberish. I assume they did that as a last resort to destroy what could have been a hidden file system, etc. I just found it interesting they had wrote anything to the drive at all. I looked at the stuff in a hex editor, seemed to be just random junk best I could tell, which made sense.. I quick formatted it again and kept using the drive..
Oh Shit!
Yes, your exactly right legally from my understanding. I was simply speaking from a personal moral view point responding to AC's made up scenario.
Your response was much better on the legal aspects, ty.

Users are the ones that get an email that says "i love you" from I_AM_A_TROJAN@FAKE_DOMAIN.COM reads it and clicks the .vbs, exe, etc attachment.

(The Politics Test- Strong Democrat, high in a lot of math, knowledge of Australia 77%, but The GNU Linux Test: 32 - The Newbie) Several pictures of him that are obviously him.. Seems to be real..

My self-summary
WARNING: Want a regular, down to earth guy? Keep moving. I am not the droid you're looking for. Save us both while you still can.
Passionate, and often pig headed activist intellectual seeks siren for love affair, children and occasional criminal conspiracy.
I am DANGER, ACHTUNG, and ??????????????!

well the developing world is not buying 600$ consoles are they? (which is what it cost up till last year)
Wish I had mod points. +1 Insightful
(it could just be a bad porn though, we do not know since it is encrypted)..
appears cablegate is on piratebay already.: http://thepiratebay.org/search/wikileaks/0/99/0

This week on the same page:
Apple® - MacBook® Pro / Intel® Core2 Duo Processor / 13.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB Hard Drive $1499.99
Sony - VAIO Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / 13.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - Silver $799.99
HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core i5 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Brushed Aluminum $599.99
Samsung - Laptop / Intel® Core i3 Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Black/Red $549.99
Best I could tell the files were random data, either by the program I ran and them trying to recover those files as you suggest or them attempting to destroy a hidden/encrypted file system.
.22 caliber bullets shot through it. 22-250 seems like reasonable last step in data destruction.
I no longer use the drive this was years ago and it made it into the shooting range and got a few
