When I was in Thailand I learned that the Thais hated the Chinese, that China had been trying to take over Thailand for 5,000 years. Bit both are Asian countries populated by orientals, to say that the Chinese are a race is like saying the Irish are a race. Sure, the Irish and Germans are both caucasians but there are marked differences in looks and culture, far more than the difference between a Thai and a Korean (there are pretty much the same types of differences).
I agree with your post about diversity, and although I'd hate to be a Star Trek borg I'm already a cyborg by dictionary definition. I have a device planted in my left eye that replaces its focusing lens, the first IOL that actually can focus. Details are in the link in my sig, I just had another operation to that eye 2 weeks ago that replaced most of its vitreous (latest journal) because the retina detached.
I'm fond of saying "you will be assimilated. Resistance is not only futile but when the time comes you will beg to join us".
Racist Western Conspiracy to Stop China From Being Successful.
China is a race? I thought the Chinese were Asian (or Oriental). Japan, Korea, Thailand, none of these Asian countries populated by Orientals have been stopped from being sucessful. When I was in Thailand in the USAF in 1974 it was incredibly primitive, but we had a Thai intern a few years ago who informed me that the roads are now paved, they have electricity and running water now, and it has become thoroughly modern and industrialized.
I'm starting to believe that whenever someone starts screaming "race" (Jesse Jackson et al) the one screaming "racist" is, in fact, the true racist.
It used to be that we only had idiots running the public schools, now it appears we have idiots running at least one university.
If I were going to school there, I'd transfer to a different school, there are a lot of them in the area. Perhaps U of C should rename itself "Luddite University"?
Kids, this comment came from a 56 year old geezer. I can only imagine how a young person who grew up with the internet would feel about this, it's like if SIU had outlawed using electricity when I was in college in the seventies.
Like I said, if I get wifi I'll leave my connection open. If Joe doesn';t want you to "leech" he can close his. It's a personal decision that should be levt up to the person with the hotspot.
You vote for individuals who are representatives of a party, and not two are alike.
But when the corporations give their contribution bribes, it doesn't matter. The legislators know who is responsible for them being in office and who has the power to get them out.
Barney Frank I don't live in Massachusetts. He won't be on my ballot.
Jon Tester.
I don't live in Montana. He won't be on my ballot.
have public financing for all campaigns
Well yes, and outlaw any contributions, but that's even less likely to happen than what I advocate. So not only will Puerto Rican's not be able to vote in the presidential election, they wont be able to support candidates?
They can become the 51st state if they wish. It's up to them.
And if that gets your Libertarian streak all hot and bothered
I'm a libertarian, not a Libertarian. I don't agree with the Libertarians that government is always the problem and never the solution, that we should let the hungry starve and the homeless freeze and that if you can't afford health care then tough shit. I'd personally like to see universal health care like the civilized world has, unlike the Libertarians. Also unlike them I see government as neccesary; there are things the privete sector can't do (e.g. arrest murderers), and other things it can't do well (e.g. health care).
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
But it is broke. We have laws on the books that outlasted their usefulness decades ago that were perhaps good for their time but not for ours, say, some subsidies.
When pages are written properly there's no need. "width='900'" is going to give you a horizontal scroll at 800x600 no matter what browser, while "width='80%'" will not.
It's a matter of not knowing how to write HTML. Any web designer who can't write a web page in notepad is incompetent.
Just clicked your "homepage" link - nope, 'snot me. However, my old ten year old twelve inch monitor at home is set to 800x600. I'll get a bigger one when the old one quits. I know people running 640x480.
I don't know what outrages me more, the RIAA suing a homeless man or the judge for not imposing sanctions.
I can only hope that the judge is elected rather than appointed and that the voters fire him next election. To not lay down sanctions against this agregious behavior is itself sloppy. A lawyer has no more right to be sloppy than a surgeon does.
useit.com is about useability, not looks. His choice of colors in the main page could definitely be improved. Webpagesthatsuck.com admits that it does indeed suck itself and violates its own guidelines. But its premise is that you can learn how to make a good page by studying bad ones.
Useit's main page is ghastly, but its subpages are minimalistically elegant. And I say that as a former fine art major (the linked page is ten years old).
Since 2000 the annual numbers of AIDS diagnoses have been relatively constant, with an estimated 37,852 in 2006 [avert.org]. That's people DIAGNOSED, not deaths.
Some 43,443 people were killed on the highways in 2005 [usatoday.com].
Meanwhile, 559,312 people who died from cancer. [avert.org] Cancer is only the second biggest killer, heart disease kills more people of ALL races. More black people die of cancer than all races combined die of AIDS.
HIV is comparitively a very minor threat, even to minorities, compared to other dangers. If you're talking about dangers to minorities you should be talking about incarceration, as a disproportionate number of our prisoners (more per capita than any other country) are minorities.
For a commercial or personal site I agree with you (although I wouldn't have told the blind to "piss off"), but a commercial site that makes handicapped unfriendly pages is just stupid.
OTOH a government or educational site should be made to be accessible.
One thing I wish you would have added wouldn't help the truly blind, but it would surely help all the over 40 geezers. That's stop using red on red, blue on blue, and especially gray onb a slightly darker gray.
Stop using non-scalable font sizes that break Firefox's [CTRL][+].
Stop trying to make the screen conform to a given size. People have different sized screens with different resolutions. It isn't paper that you've printed and dictate the size of. Your anal control-freakery just gives you a bad, ugly site with too wide of margins and wasted screen real estate, or worse, horizontal scroll bars.
want marijuana legalized. Which party should I vote for? Sounds good... Dems, Libertarians, Green Party.
The Dems control congress, yet pot's still illegal. I've been splitting my vote between the greens and the Libs for years, but the corporate media keeps telling America that my vote is "wasted".
I want it illegal to contribute to more than one candidate in any given race. Which party should I vote for? Why?
Like I said, contribute a bucket of campaign bribes to the Democrat and another bucket to the Republicans, and no matter who loses, you win. A contribution to a candidate should be because you believe that his agenda matches yours. Contributing to more than one party, especially to the democrat and republican, is just too damned dishonest.
I want it illegal to accept contributions from anyone who isn't eligible to vote for you. Which party should I vote for? Like a foreign person? A person in another Party can vote in the general election for whomever they wish.
Bill Gates should not be able to contribute to Dick Durbin unless Durbin runs for President, no minor child should be able to contribute to anybody, and unions and corporations shouldn't be allowed to contribute. The president of a union or corporation sure, but only to candidates he's eligible to vote for. If he's not on my ballot he shouldn't be able to get my money.
Votes should count for more than cash. The way it is we live in a plutocracy.
Which Party? It would have to be a new one.
Bingo!
Your ideas intrigue me. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter....
The closest thing to a newsletter I have is my slashdot journal. The latest entry is about my recent eye operation, the one before it is about universal health care and our lack of same. But you would be disappointed in most of them, as they're usually about booze and women.
I never said I was against all laws; I said we had too many. Two of those three would cut down on the $corruption$ that is ruining our nation, while the third would reduce the number of laws in total.
Meanwhile, 559,312 people who died from cancer. Cancer is only the second biggest killer, heart disease kills more people of ALL races. More black people die of cancer than all races combined die of AIDS.

Reread the post. By "we" I mean "we Linux users". The point being if you bought or built a bare no-OS PC and installed Linux on it, you might quite naturally assume that your new Dell you bought to replace or compliment it would come with an office suite, too. It would be pretty much of a letdown to discover that your new Dell wouldn't do half of what your old homemade Linux PC would without a several hundred dollar purchase.
There isn't much you can do with a computer that doesn't come "out of the box" with Linux, and there isn't much you CAN do with that new Dell without a huge outlay in cash. I'm running dual boot Mandriva/XP at home. The only reason I have Windows still on it at all is because Mandriva thinks the subdirectories on HD1 (D: to windows, HDb to Linux) are files.
IINM you're talking about a few hundred deaths worldwide this century, right? Meanwhile half a million people die of cancer every year alone, and the per-capita cancer rates have been dropping for decades.
One danger we didn't have in the '70s (oh, what a great decade to be a twentysomething nerd!) was HIV. Coupling the lack of any incurable STD with cheap and easy birth control made it so even nerds could get laid. But even still, more Americans die of heart disease than numbers of the entire worldwide population who die of AIDS.
Polio's gone, playgrounds are MUCH safer, and should a seven year old kids kid break both his arms falling off the swingset like I did, they don't have to knock him out with ether like they did me. Cars have seat belts and air bags. In fact, there isn't a single thing I can think of that makes the world more dangerous now than in the past.
I have a buddy who works for the post office. You can believe that your mail is safe.
Look at Hitler's attempted conquest of the rest of Europe. Same thing, different race/continent.

Wow.
There's an uncyclopedia article about the guy who implimented U of C's stupid anti-internet rule.

Paper envelopes are not a particularly secure channel.
It's not the paper that makes them secure, it's the strong laws against tampering with them.

IIRC the Mexican border has been there for a while now, and people have been sneaking across for a long time.

As will some small, local internet service companies and their employees.
Well yeah, it's hard to compete with "free".
Like the guy who gives such great advice on firewall configuration at the local LUG.
You lost me there. Whos is this Limux guy that's giving you such a hard time in his user group?
