r-squared is a measure of how much of the variation in a variable is attributable to correlation with another variable. An r-squared of 0.7 indicates that 70% of the variation is down to variation of a correlated variable, and 30% is due to other factors.

The holy grail for financial quantitative analysts would be to find two financial instruments with a coefficient of correlation of -1 and an r-squared of 1 as by investing in these two together you would be absolutely guarenteed to make profit.

It does. A correlation with a negative covariance but an r-squared near 1.

That's all well and good until the plaintiff claims that he has patronised that cinema for years and had reliable reception until they painted the walls and failed to inform the patrons of the changes in a reliable way - a potential case for negligence that at least would tie up court time.

Being two days away from civilization is hardly the same as being in a building where you are maybe half an hour drive from work. Honestly, the number of people on here saying "If you don't like the conditions, don't do the job" is ridiculous. I bet the same people protest about DRM.

Mobile phones ARE used for chemical plant emergency response team members to be kept in touch with 24/7. And just because you may have redundant transmitters etc for pagers doesn't mean that a Faraday cage will be able to think "oh no, that's a doctor's signal"

Of course the pilots can navigate & are able to fly. However, by having to concentrate all the way through a tedious long haul flight they will be more fatigued when it comes to be time to land. This is why you have an autopilot. It is also not necessarily the case that you will know that your GPS is reading poorly. You could fly on thinking you are on path when you are off. In reality you'd get a discrepancy flagged up vs your INS readings so you'd know but losing sensors when you can help it isn't a good thing.
