This is absolutley untrue. Let's look at who they were earning their money from: Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Levi-Strauss, Siemens, The Environmental Defense Fund, Cyrano.

I ran a help desk for awhile. Now I don't but I work closely with ours. I think that 100:1 is a pretty good ratio if your people know what they are doing. Here is the critical stuff you will need in order to make it run effectively: 1. A database for call logging, tracking and issue resolution is most important. This will become your knowledgebase. 2. Your staff needs good documentation available (preferably written by them) on each piece of software they support. 3. Remote control software is critical! This is not such a big deal in a unix environment because X will give you most of that. But in a windows environment, remote control stuff will save you a bundle in terms of time and effort. 4. Automated software packaging and rollouts and machine cloning with programs like ghost and picture taker can save your people lots of time and drudgery.
