  1. X11 for *nix, PCDuo for Windows on Which VNC Software Is Best? · · Score: 1

Wouldn't this indict Microsoft. I think it could be effectively argued that Windows causes "degradation, failure or other impairment of function of a computerised system."

Mr. Katz, before you run your mouth about what does and does not consititute myth, may I suggest you do something really basic: learn what myths are and how they work. May I suggest you take a look at the works of Joseph Campbell before you decide whether Lucas has anything to learn about myth.

If you remember that Belo Corp. was a major investor in the whole CueCat scheme you will quickly realize that the cluelessness of this corporation knows no bounds. I pity the foo's in Dallas who have to rely on these people for news (Dallas Morning News and WFAA Channel 8 are both Belo subsidiaries.)

  7. Re:after my on Municipal Networks as Alternative to Commercial Broadband? · · Score: 1

We discussed this issue in our first meeting, and I was a little nervous because ours is a *very* conservative town. But it was a no contest for those involved. Filters available to those who want them, wide-open for everyone else. Standard isp disclaimers and all the rest.

  8. Sometimes a municipal network is the only solution on Municipal Networks as Alternative to Commercial Broadband? · · Score: 1

I live in a small town where all we can get is dial-up access. The phone company will not upgrade their network because they say it is too expensive. The local cable company (Charter) has been totally non-responsive to our requests for cable internet.

So we took the ball in our own hands and the city just received a large grant from the state to build a high speed wireless network that will connect the entire town to the internet. Our project team just met for the first time last night.

We are all convinced that if the private sector won't respond, then the public utility model is the best approach.

  9. Document Mangement on Version Control for Documentation? · · Score: 1

Documentum is a product that you hear a lot about. We use a product called Worldview from a company called Interleaf. It runs on Unix and we use Oracle as our backend repository. Users can check documents in using a word processor and an application called RDM. (RDM is the loading component, Worldview is the document viewer.)

You don't know what you're talking about. Greenspun et al made a lot of money taking cash from startups who were flush with venture capital. A rising tide floats all ships.

This is absolutley untrue. Let's look at who they were earning their money from: Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Levi-Strauss, Siemens, The Environmental Defense Fund, Cyrano.

Not a single .com or startup in the bunch with the exception of the successful sites like Away.com, Site59.com, and WineAccess.com. Looks like those .com companies spent their capital wisely on a workable web solution.

  15. Staffing Your Help Desk on How Much Manpower Is Behind Your Help Desk? · · Score: 1

I ran a help desk for awhile. Now I don't but I work closely with ours. I think that 100:1 is a pretty good ratio if your people know what they are doing. Here is the critical stuff you will need in order to make it run effectively:
    1. A database for call logging, tracking and issue resolution is most important. This will become your knowledgebase.
    2. Your staff needs good documentation available (preferably written by them) on each piece of software they support.
    3. Remote control software is critical! This is not such a big deal in a unix environment because X will give you most of that. But in a windows environment, remote control stuff will save you a bundle in terms of time and effort.
    4. Automated software packaging and rollouts and machine cloning with programs like ghost and picture taker can save your people lots of time and drudgery.
