It would be possible to build an inverter that would disconnect the incoming mains supply in the event of a power failure, and "slip" the inverter until it's in phase before dropping it back in, but you'd need something like a 100A contactor for that to work.
you don't need a 100A contactor for it. You use DC straight from your backup until power is restored. No need to make things complicated.
Well, it seems most of you have missed the major point of the article. It seems this prof wants to pitch his particular brand of online replacement for the traditional classroom and lecture (by making all the material available online, and giving students the ability to collaborate there). I think it's a terrible idea. Personally, ive found that whenever a prof uses a lot of powerpoint, makes the coursework available online, or encourages outside study groups for questions rather than direct questions during class, it is the first indication that a) this particular class is their lowest priority and they don't plan on doing a particularly great job of lecturing or conveying the coursework in another way or b) this particular professor knows s/he isn't good at teaching this particular class, but since you have other options than to learn from then, you should still be able to pass the class. I've found the best learning experiences in my college coursework (EE from CU) were primarily lectures with some socratic seminars mixed in. Online replacements have never been much use for me. I hope profs dont take this kind of crap too seriously and recognize that not all of their students learn in the same way, and a variety of options is probably the best way to really teach the material.
Expect something to replace hard drives around the time quantum processors show up on the market. I would venture a guess that when something replaces light lithography in chip design, you will see your holographic drive.
Exactly, not many people are prepared to drop $2500 on cell service over 2 years even if it comes with unlimited data. Great for those people whose companies drop the money on their service plans though.
I think it will be a success anyway, just sayin.

Funny note: as i was looking for the thermodynamic properties of plutonium, ebay promised to make me a great offer on it.
Seriously, like ice it will expand and get less dense as it drops in temperature. Only, instead of just the one phase change, there are many. Unfortunately, this is the best I can find for a phase diagram. In thermo, my prof put up a much nicer one, just trust, the phase diagram is pretty crazy looking.
Do you have any idea how sensitive the heads on your hard drive are? If this program functions as advertised (using off-track information) you don't have to worry about that sort of interferance at all.
"In that very small sample, the majority of Seagates (all?) come with 5-year warranties"
You are correct. All Seagate HDD's come with a 5 year warranty.
De-evolution implies that evolution includes some drive toward more and more complexity. This simply isn't true. Evolution drives to best adapt an organism to it's surroundings, sometimes additional complexity is one solution. And anyway I would bet this particular effect is primarily just due to overfishing.
How is that different than any other issue, with a 98% incumbancy rate, we no longer have a democratically elected congress. They seriously don't care about the people they serve, unless they happen to be lobbyists.
IMHO When a government agency is torturing people without just cause, maybe that is something that the public has a right to know about... Just a thought. Sometimes leaks are good.
Consumers, if given an option, will choose a DVR with a fast forward button. Since the components of a DVR/PVR are pretty cheap, and scheduling services can be pretty cheap to free there is no way some jackass ABC exec will move the market to remove the fast forward feature. Even if he were able to convince the cable co's (not to dificult since they also benifit) and Tivo, market forces would push consumers to alternatives which allow users to fast forward. This guy is just trying to cause a rucus so he can get a little more ad revenue.
the Douglas County Sheriff's Office now gets free high speed internet from Comcast for their tireless efforts in making everyone pay for thier own cable internet... It's Craptastic!
People have been saying this for years, yet it never seems to happen. Why? Flash goes down in price per capacity linearly while HDD's go down in price per capacity nearly exponentially. Sure a GB of Flash is going to be dirt cheap in a couple of years, but your going to want 500 GB in 2.5 in. And a HDD is still going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than flash.
No you jackass. Unless you live somewhere where you get to choose who you buy Public Utilities from, your phone company and your cable company don't own their wires, they lease them. Go ahead and switch your cable provider, try it. Switch your electric company too. Since the government created the monopoly of these utilities, it is responsible for protecting the public from their abuses.

They just want this patent so that if anyone else gives it away for free M$ can claim patent infringment and put an end to it. Come on, its M$.

Joao Magueigo wrote a really great book predicting this about 5 years ago. Check it out. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I'll only vote for you if your campaign slogan is "Vote for 218170 - He's #1!"

Which in turn makes pirated copies more useful than genuine.
And how long would an OS from Google take to get out of Beta? I don't think I'm gonna live that long.
Seagate has a 5 year warranty on every drive. It is intended that the lube will last the life of the drive.

Even M$ doesn't believe this business plan will work. The M$ Live Exec is gone which might be an indication of how this is going to go down.
Exactly correct. Vista will require such hybrid drives, so expect them soon.

Thats only true because the "work" part of the day is about 15 minutes and the slashdot part of the day is 8 hours.
