On the authority of Anas Bin Malik (R.A.A.) who said: The Messenger of God (PBUH), said: "Three things follow a dead person: family members, his belongings, and his deeds- The first two come back and the third remains with him." (Bukhari and Muslim)
In biology nothing works like a clock, systems are way too complex and the best scientific software is actually the one than does not follow Occam razor rule.
For example, in protein structure prediction (CASP experiment) dumb servers repeatedly beat humans trying come up with elegant solutions. Watching day by day how software designers burn on a regular basis by peculiarities of biological systems and how old amateur programs written in PERL are still popular.
Software engineers in biology should embrace the fickle nature of biological systems and try to accommodate all the poorly written code made by bench biologists. They know their stuff, they know all the exceptions.
It absolutely does not make sense to construct monstrosities of highrise software platforms. Instead, software engineers in biology should concentrate on wrappers that will allow the working bastardian amateur code to work in larger systems.
Write as it goes, don't plan much, in two years overwrite it with inclusion of new ideas. In biology, everything is fluid, nothing is fixed.
Look at the most successful enterprise in the history of bioinformatics: BioPerl: ugly mash-up of algorithms yet very popular because of extreme ease of use and coding.
I watched many times (for 25 years) the process of downshifting: physicists into biology, programmers into biology, and how in the beginning of computerized biology it seemed like clarity of physical thinking is going to triumphantly win biological problems Nope. Didn't happen. This patronizing invasion of physicists and programmers in biology lead to nothing. Scientifically elegant constructs failed miserably and HMMs, neural network, support vector machines, context free grammar crap, machine learning, genetic algorithms - all those morlocks of bioinformatics devoured elegant eloys of early years. The new dumb stuff works, because it uses dumb empirical approach to the vast amount of unsimplifiable, unclassifiable data. The methods I just mentioned are a symbol of a massive human failure to comprehend complex systems.
Programmers and physicists should go down in humility and realize that they are nothing more than lab technicians and they should stay that way, they should behave that way, they should be servants of bench biologists, not the prophets. There is no theory in biology.
So returning to the subject: embrace the legacy code whatever it is. It's not worth rewriting it, use it as it is, go around it, make wrappers. Don't aspire to complex software architectures.
I am outraged that slashdot crowd is not outraged enough on this subject. This amounts to the even higher level of vicious anti-scientist persecution that Putin's camarilla did to several Russian scientists accused of spying.
No, seriously, Putin had more grounds to persecute those guys (no matter how ridiculous those grounds are) compared to what happened to the scientists.
Yes it does. That's what arms are for: for protection what is dear to you.
If you decided that the life is the only thing worth protecting, that's you. There things that are dear to me more than life, so I am protecting them by violence.
I do not care what you think of my rights. My rights are guaranteed by my resolution to use them no matter what is the threat from your government.
It never caught up in US either until Colt retired as a peacemaker.
American culture remains largely a culture of cowboys: decency of speech is based on the threat of violence if you spoke offensively. That's why Texans are still very polite.
I like this part of the culture. I wish liberals understand that if they have retain the right to insult me, I am retaining the right to respond in a manner suitable for a man.
crack the door ? crack the door ?? crack the door ???
David Irving. Dozens of Muslim political prisoners (Tarek Mehanna, most recent - exclusively free speech).
On 11 November 2005, the Austrian police in the southern state of Styria, acting under the 1989 warrant, arrested Irving. Irving pleaded guilty to the charge of "trivialising, grossly playing down and denying the Holocaust" and was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in accordance with the law prohibiting National Socialist activities (officially Verbotsgesetz, "Prohibition Statute").
The door has been cracked open long time ago, it's just this time they are coming for you, Martin.
>Either you believe in freedom of speech, and all the nastiness that goes with it, or you want the world to adopt your narrow-minded, pathetic excuses for why women shouldn't drive, be allowed to walk alone or meet with men who aren't their relatives.
I find it amusing that of all restrictions in Shariah you chose the ones related to women...
And, yes, I choose the latter. Moreover, since I am too old to go anywhere, I choose to work on establishing the latter in your country.
The difference between the troll and The Onion, is that The Onion is well known satire magazine and only Iranian government and people who live under rock don't know that. The troll who signs up "The Troll" is not a troll anymore, he is just expressing obviously offensive material with a noble desire to wake up the masses from their...well, you know what I mean.
Unless he is Holocaust victims. God forbid trolling the Jews.
Summary was a waste of time. The submitter should have specified that "The Troll" turned out to be victim's friend's stupid teenager son.
I understand that the fear of the victim and suffering, etc. was real, but for the rest of us, statistics is what important and the identity of the petty young sociopath as a (1) acquaintance (2) teenager, would help a lot for other victims of anonymous harassment to be more calm about such cases.
I have heard about 2/3 rate, not 90% rate. There is little room to independently separate propaganda exaggeration from actual facts.
>sickle-cell
Here is homework for you, newbie:
1/ read the Wikipedia article on sickle cell anemia
2/ read the fricking original article
TIM-barrels
No.
Shaping is nothing in proteins. Function is everything.

can't wait.

Shame!
I have no problem with you pursuing your right.
It's a metaphor, stupid.

And if an old man thinks that JavaScript is too difficult to learn, then the one fits the group mentioned in the title of a recent famous movie.

Since when speaking the truth is being a jerk? Wait... it's almost always :-)
Seriously though. The purpose of the movie is usually to entertain, not to demonstrate mad skillz in CGI. It's a synthetic experience.
Watch The Man Escaped by Andre Bresson. This will glue you to the screen better than all Bruckenheimer movies condensed into 15 min.
Offtopic: first time I was proud of my Firefox "suggested replacement" (Bruckenheimer ->Oppenheimer). Well done, my fierce hot predator.
30% at $300 bill is $100 by 3 winter month = $300 a year. Four quick years.
THis is some kind of joke, right? Playing on the extreme lameness of everything that is not technology in this movie: acting, plot, story...
Electronics that dissolves in the body ... and keeps working in that state. Try to remove the RFID tag put on you by Big Brother now, champ.
