  1. Re:Not with IE still hanging around on Adobe's New HTML5 Design Tool No Threat To Flash · · Score: 1

IE7 doesn't have a lot of market share at all, IE9 is already topping it according to NetApplications. Most IE-users are on IE8 right now, so they're not that far away of using a proper browser, really. It's just a matter of a little time and those users will be on IE9, which as you correctly state offers a lot things other browsers have been shipping for a long time, like HTML5, CSS3 and a decent Javascript engine.

IE6 is a problem when you look at the numbers. The thing is however, I haven't shipped a single website in the past 12 months that supports IE6 and I had literally 0 complaints from any client. I develop websites for all sorts of businesses (including schools) and I don't see any of them using IE6 anymore. I don't know who is still using it, but nobody I'm in contact with anyway.

  6. Just fork it on What Do I Do About My Ex-Employer Stealing My Free Code? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Why don't you just fork it from the latest version when it still had the GPL/MIT license and release it in a new project? This should be even easier in your situation, because the company decided to change the name of the software, which means you can simply keep using the old name for the new project. This also doesn't confuse users, as they will probably remember and recognize the software by name.

Once you've got the new project up and running, you can of course sue your old employer for distributing open source licensed software without the proper licence and source code.

It's inferior in two ways. The first is described already by Dr_Barnowl below: you're lossy encoding an already lossy encoded file, which results in inferior audio quality.

The second thing is that you have to manually edit the recording to the desired length, so you'll end up with a file that hasn't got the same start / stop moments (ie length) as the original file, so you'll have more problems automatically getting metadata from services such as freedb.

  9. Re:Spotify on Spotify Sued For Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

Of course you can. You can also record radio, which is basically the same as what Spotify is offering. Either way you'll end up putting a lot of time and end up with inferior results, which is why nobody actually does this on a larger scale than a handful of songs.

  10. Re:Spotify on Spotify Sued For Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

Why would you go through the hassle of recording and re-encoding streams from Spotify? If you want free music on your hard drive, just head over to the Piratebay or whatever file sharing service you prefer and grab what you want.

The point of services like Spotify is to provide users with free or cheap music to users in such a way that artists are compensated and the music industry can be profitable, allowing it to create new music in the future. If you're interested in that, than a service like Spotify is great. If you just want free music on your PC, then there are many other ways which are both easier and ensure better quality.

Of course MS-DOS, or any other DOS-like "operating system" (it's really nothing more than a loader) is utter crap when measured by todays standards. But because DOS was such a massive platform in its day, there is a gigantic wealth of applications and games for it. Especially most of the games are still great when played today. That's why DosBox is such an amazing piece of software: it lets anyone tap into that extremely large pool of really cool stuff. Even though I've played loads of those kind of games, I still discover new and fun ones from time to time and I have a great time with them. So I guess in the end, MS-DOS isn't so bad after all.
