This is why Gmail has an alternative to the Ajax interface , and you can switck to HTML mode , and it just removes the AJAX dependant features:
* Filter creation
* Settings (Including Forwarding and POP)
* Spell checker
* Keyboard shortcuts
* Address auto-complete

Google really sets a fine example here by letting users choose what kind of interface they prefer , even though they could easily just ignore these users, as I personaly dont know anyone that uses this feature . Making a dual interface for AJAX applications on all these fluffy Web2.0 sites is a good idea , specially for mobile/light clients like that 100$ laptop
This isn't flame bait, it's just an opinion , and he didn't elaborate.That's all .
Flame bait would posting

Linus is a gifted engineer,let him be rude . Aside from Linus being rude , there is no actual story here .
I used to own restourant and also an Office supplies shop . It was quite interesting and made me some money , but I hated the fact that the most important factor in my life was pleasing(customers) or fighting(suppliers) other people . I had to constantly think what to say and how to behave .
I am no longer a business owner , and now I work with a rather gifted bunch of engineers , and frankly it gives me great pleasure to know that neither I nor the people I work with dont really care about being polite , clean shaven well spoken or good looking . I can be rude if I want to , they can be rude if they want to , and we all get along very well .
Ex-fucking-actly . And I dont think that the OS community should go out if its way to get " The Leading domain squatting Platform" badge .
Just to clarify - this isn't what I do for a living . I just do it =) .
I own around 70 domains , many of which are parked through Sedo because many of the domains are for sale . Frankly speaking , parking is one of the most idiotic and pointless services on the internet .
In an ideal world , a person that parks a domain name without stating explicitly why it isn't used but parked(like me) , should get a refund and the domain should be taken away , just in case someone actually wants to use it . This is my honest opinion . I get barely 3$ a month from accidental traffic and clicks and once in a while a domain gets sold to a person , for no less than x500 the price I paid .
The only upside of a parked domain is that it gives even more (usually cheaper) advertising space for merchants , and since parked domain traffic usually comes from people that just type a meaningful domain name ( Old Sites for instance )into their Address bar, these are usually very targeted visitors .
But still,I dont see a reason for OS devs to take any pride in providing the platform for Domain Parking .
From wikipedia: In his defense, Panoussis invoked a Swedish Constitutional Right known as offentlighetsprincipen. This is a provision of the Swedish Constitution that guarantees access to public documents in order to prevent corruption and fraud, and it is considered a basic civil right in Sweden. Panoussis turned over a copy of the NOT documents to the office of the Swedish Parliament and, by law, copies of the documents were available for anyone from the public to see, at any time he or she wished
They really put some thought behind this Right , and this was exactly what the people that wrote it had in mind . Copyrighting the NOT (New Era Dianetics for Operating Thetans)document and forbidding it from being published holds little difference from copyrighting a Nigerian scam letter in order to prevent the public from knowing about the scam .
You misunderstood why I stated the rates . Point is that eventually , the clearing is done through the same system all over the world . It's a sort of a franchise . Therefor,no reason a person in the US should pay for the same service from the same company more than he does in any other part of the world .
Specially considering the fact that there are more CC clearing companies in the US than here . Logic says US merchants should enjoy lower rates , don't you think ?
It did reboot and crash . The whole piece . Not just the Apps .
You are blindly defending it just because it's Linux . The product is not something of quality any of us would actually pay for.
Not everyone that says MS products are good or Linux sucks are posting flamebait/trolling . Plenty of people actually hold this opinion .
"unpatched win 98" . Oh no ! He said MS doesnt suck enough ! OMG ! Kill him !111!!!!11!!one!
Just because it's a rant doesnt mean it's a flamebait .
And about Paypal Vs CC clearing : Paypal account freezing policies are much worse that any CC clearing company , in Israel cc clearing is around 1.7%, and as low as 0.65% for gas stations and travel agencies , with no per-transaction fee at all , setup fees , monthly fees or gateway fees .
Since here (in Israel) the credit cards are the same as in any other part of the world (Visa , MC , AMex , Diners) I don't see why should small merchants pay the 2.9%+ 0.3usd per transaction in the US , and risk fund freezing(plenty of PayPal horror stories) .
Paypal is used mainly for two reasons - Ebay and really small merchants.The ebay integration is what keeps this company alive and I am confident that 80% of it's revenue is generated throgh Ebay's sites.It has very little use outside it,unless you just dont have a CC with you(or at all)
A Paypal transactions doesnt make much sence for a merchant outside of ebay . Every merchant allready pays the CC clearing fees (because no one in their right mind would actually not accept credit cards) , so a paypal transaction would just cost more , and moreover it would actually hurt the merchant's chances of getting better % from his CC clearing company .
With all due respect , Netscape had it's chance of getting a good % of the market(even with IE pre-installed) , but it was the bloated , buggy products (everything 4+) that really made it fail .
Not everything !=MS is better .
Lucent is far from being a small company , and if not some really bad hardware in the 1999-2001 , could have taken Cisco's place .
Lucent is actually huge , and has merged with Alcatel . The annual income is over 25 billion $
If the average Windows user had 50% the technical knowledge of the average Linux user , you would have 95% less security problems . The problem with security is that the user is not supposed to know what a port or an IP is , but be protected by the OS from the people that do know .
With all due respect , securing a Windows box enough to get it online is 10x times easier that securing a *nix box .
As I see it , even if GoogleOS will not become the desktop standart , Google is heading in the direction of enabling many of the functions currently availble only as installed applications , through a web browser .
Writely and Gmail are both AJAX based , and these are a word processor and a IM/Email application , both clearly target desktop-application dominated markets.
To understand it better , you might want to use Gmail through a simple Javascript disabled interface (it is also supported, through basic HTML view) and see how it behaves .
I believe that everything that is not content, will be delivered using an AJAX based interface in the near future .
The term "Hacker" is used in the media to portray almost anyone with enough technical knowledge to use a vulnerability , due to the fact that it allows the "hacker" to execute an attack . And that's mighty stupid.
It's like saying that a person with the ability to read a Microwave manual and operate it successfully is an engineer .
