Having dates change at significantly different times during the day in different parts of the world is just has no redeeming value. If you can find one I would love to hear it.
I can sum them up in one case, that almost everyone deals with: Working with anyone not in the same workplace as you.
Note I didn't even say "Working with people currently in other time zones". That one should be self-explanatory.
If you don't work in my office, you have NO idea what morning & afternoon is for me in terms of my work day.
Currently, I sometimes take my lunch at 1000 EDT, or 1400Z. Since that is about 0805 in terms of sunlight, I'm having my lunch during what you just defined as morning.
Assumptions are the mother of all fuck-ups. If we were on UTC, you would be forced to be clear on what your and my availability was. Thankfully, we would have a single clock to coordinate with.
So, this case:
Yesterday could mean an hour ago, based on calender day, or over 12 hours based on solar days.
always means the previous UTC day. I can say "I'll take care of X early tomorrow" and no matter where in the world you are, you know I mean before 1200Z. For us in the USA, that matches nicely with "I'll take care of X this afternoon".
It is only the transition that is difficult, not living with it.
I also understand there is about as much chance at this as getting Metric in the USA, but it makes me feel better to try to fix the problem instead of only bitching about it!
It also means that just after we get past driving into the sun in the morning commute & into the sun on the home commute (for those who live west of work), we get to do it AGAIN!
That said, EA was pretty clear in that Sim City 5 is a multiplayer game that has the option of a private game with only 1 person, not a single player game with a multiplayer option.
Calling Sim City 5 single-player is like calling Tribes (letting my age slip) a single-player game because you could setup a private map with bots.
I'm a Christian, and I completely agree with what you're pitching here.
I'd also try to convince my church to put in a policy where when they perform a marriage, that a divorce for any reason other than an unfaithful spouse means that the one the wants the divorce gives up all rights to property & kids. Make it a required pre-nuptial agreement that specifies that the only arbiters of the agreement are the board of the church.
Divorce is more of a threat to the sanctity of marriage than same-sex marriage.
Which has precisely nothing to do with the colocation company topic. It's not your job to deal with these machines. You've been sidelined.
If this was ever true, I don't know any IT admins that would oppose this.
The problem is, we're ALL been told this bullshit before. The pattern is very predictable:
New Guy: Hey, I think this new way of doing stuff is awesome. I need you to build it for me.
IT: No, there are support reasons why we can't do it that way. Here is how you can get most of what you want (but not all), and it won't stop us from being able to support it.
New Guy: Screw you, I'll do it myself.
New Guy: See, I have this system I setup, and I can run the whole company on it!
PHB: Good job! You're promoted!
New Guy's replacement: Umm, IT? I don't know how to run this stuff, and the company is down now.
IT: We were promised that this wouldn't be our problem anymore.
CEO: IT, it is a computer. We pay you to fix computers. Fix it.
IT now drops all other projects to fix New Guy's mess, and gets their ass chewed (and some may lose their jobs), all because New Guy knew better.
I have seen this happen at EVERY place I've worked. It is always promised we won't have to support it, and we ALWAYS are made to support it or find work somewhere else.
This isn't about salaries or pyramids, this is about us actually knowing how to do our job & protect the business from sales & marketing guys that think they know IT.
To the the clueless: Hiring you isn't my job. Hiring you is just extra work.
I'm so glad you're not my manager.
I've hired people before as well, and I've learned one thing: If I fuck up in my hire, I'm going to spend TONS of time dealing with this bad hire, even if it is to terminate. However, if I do MY JOB right and hire well, being a manager for a good hire is so easy it is fun.
My job is to do my homework & hire well so you make my job easier.
I included news sources from two different slants, didn't know what one you would distrust more.
As one article said, "If you want less of something, tax it more". If you are going to tax sales more, you are going to have LESS THINGS SOLD. Again, awesome for the economy.
However, all of that said, I would be willing to accept a national sales tax if we taxed EVERY transaction, including bank deposits or stock purchases.
National sales tax is a stupid idea. It makes goods bought in the USA cost more, and it does not take into account the benefit of living in the USA.
If I made $1,000,000, I have benefited by living in the USA to the tune of $1,000,000. The amount I owe the USA is some function of that. The infrastructure of the USA allowed me to earn that money, and the armies of the USA protects it.
However, if I only have to pay sales taxes for things I buy in the USA, I can:
-Buy things from other countries (this already happened before with yacht sales & luxury tax) -Not buy as much stuff (Bad for the economy) -Only buy what I need to live (Unfair for those that make less, as my spend will be a fraction of my income, while theirs may be all of their income)
However, flat-tax is great. Establish a poverty line, perhaps even a per-person allowance for caretakers. This should be the minimum amount required to live, and adjusted each year based off of the value of the dollar. ALL income (even capital gains) above this line is taxed at the same level. No deductions for mortgages, charity, etc. Now, we're being fair.
Some people have solar & wind directly at their home. Some others pay extra to make sure their power company buys the same amount of clean power as the customer consumes.
Yes, some people charge their car without pollution.
To your point, though: Li-Ion batteries are not made of fairy dust, but some downright awful shit. I don't know if that offsets the air pollution or not.
I bought a Windows Phone. I really wanted to like it.
I LOVED the interface, I really think live tiles are great for phones (don't get me started on how much they suck for Windows).
All that said, when I got an iPhone 5 after having the Windows phone, I was happy to have the apps back. Very short list of apps I could not get on Windows Phone that are not fart apps & I use often:
Glympse (WP wouldn't run in the background) Pandora Dish Network (Streaming from my DVR at home) Fitbit Starbucks Flickr Swiss Trains app (and about 20 other BUSINESS travel related apps that are usually done for iPhone first, Android second, and low support for anything else) *Microsoft* Photosynth - Yes, I know they finally have it for WP now, but for the longest time, Microsoft's app was only available on iPhone. Skype - My WP couldn't receive calls on it, because Microsoft wouldn't update my phone to WP8
I really want WP to be a good 3rd option, but they have to get the app support. This is the EXACT same reason I suggested Windows to people for the previous 20 years - Macs might be fun & cute, but Windows has the applications. When it comes to mobile, it is now the opposite.
Allow me to help you with communicating in the 21st century:
1. Send email. 2. If deadline approaches, resend email. 3. If response can no longer wait, use SMS/Chat/Phone Call
I find that I don't have to get to #3 that often, but I waste much less of my time and everyone else's time by not making them stop what they are doing to respond to me THIS SECOND.
Why not roll your own server to store your contacts on IMAP? I just don't like the idea of a single chip that contains a bunch of stuff that I'll miss when I lose it or the chip dies from wear.
The issues are exactly the same for an ISP that has installed carrier-grade NAT64 so that IPv6-only users can view web sites that don't yet have an AAAA.
No, this is why you deploy dual-stack. Don't make a bunch of workarounds for IPv4 or IPv6.
My point is that instead of calling CG NAT a solution, they should deploy NAT alongside IPv6.
If the user has issues, inform them that if XYZ.com would simply upgrade to IPv6, their problems would go away.

People will still want lunch around when the sun is highest in the sky.
Tell me more about this as that will be at 1355 EDT for me. (Indiana, look it up)
Once you accept DST, you have already stated that you don't give a shit about matching time to the sun. Let's just complete the loop and do UTC.
Granted this is focused on the US, but hey, I live here.

YAY MORE WRECKS!
I agree, those are also threats.
I'm working on it. As you can imagine, there is a lot to work to do. I've had the same idea as the GP a long time ago.
The hospital has way more sick people than healers. Same with a church.
Note: I don't own the game, and likely won't.
That said, EA was pretty clear in that Sim City 5 is a multiplayer game that has the option of a private game with only 1 person, not a single player game with a multiplayer option.

you don't always need a smartnet
Try downloading software without it. You might have a hardware warranty, but that doesn't include software updates.

They won't feel remorse or pity, they will not get tired or give up until you are DEAD.
*clap**clap*
Sounds like I don't have worry about working for you, then!
You and I have had the EXACT opposite experience with "well-educated" candidates. Perhaps we're both biased based on our personal education choices.
I'm so glad you're not my manager.

You're welcome. Good point, though. I don't suffer from the same issues, but after you pointed them out, they're hard to miss.

Have you ever considered that the Bible could contain both facts and symbolism?
I jailbroke for the first time with 6.1 just to get "Wifi Analyzer" as well, and also to perform the duties of my job better.
I was hoping to find a whole exciting new world after jail-breaking, but most of it is boring (themes) or broken.
So, if Apple would quit the moral judgement of apps, and focus just on usability & stability, I'd have no reason to jailbreak.
Why not roll your own server to store your contacts on IMAP? I just don't like the idea of a single chip that contains a bunch of stuff that I'll miss when I lose it or the chip dies from wear.

CPU & latency have not been an issue for years now.
Everything else you explained either compromises functionality or makes everything far more complex.
Simply deploying IPv6 solves all the issues. Instead, some would rather make an even bigger house of cards.
Who said SSL = user accounts?
