    -Death from oppressive government

We rant and shout with each other over which one is the bigger threat.

Meanwhile, most of us die from lack of proper personal health (diet, exercise, etc) or automobile wrecks, all of which are 100% within our ability to control.

There has never been a piece of framing lumber, iron, or plumbing pipe sold in the US labeled with metric dimensions. The total cost in actual dollars, education, retraining, wasted material, etc, to convert these industries alone would likely equal the GDP of all but the top 20 coutries in the world.

    Two things:
-No one in suggesting throwing out all of the existing material. Just start labeling it in both. Eventually, label it only in metric.
-We're not doing this for us, we're doing it for our kids. Yes, there will be expense during the transition, which normally takes 10 years. Those that were taught Imperial units will use them until they die. But once most of those people die (and die they will, eventually), everyone else will stop wasting money converting stuff into American units. Something made in the US could be used world-wide with no re-labeling or re-measurement.

Learn the difference between a one-time cost and something that saves money forever.

Perhaps you never have to work with people in other countries now. My guess is that if you continue to work, you will have to deal with this sooner or later.

    Other reasons:
Waste of money to make products in US units and metric units.
Cooking with grams & ml is MUCH easier than cups, quarts, tablespoons, teaspoons, etc. as you can scale quite easily.

I shouldn't have to spend a ton of time tracking down all of these apps & removing their icons just o use the OS.

I'm really pissed about this because I believe the core OS improvements are GREAT compared to Windows 7, but even though I have Windows 8 on two of my laptops, I still get more done on the one that runs Windows 7 because the UI of Windows 8 fucks up my workflow, and they took away any option for me to run it like Windows 7.

This was also proven in several instances where manual human intervention saved a mission when automated systems failed.

Before you counter, yes, there were also man-made mistakes that caused problems during a mission. (Example Lovell's mistake in Apollo 8, which he manually corrected, and then used the skill on Apollo 13 when he didn't make a mistake).

I'd also agree that sending the Mars automated rovers were the best first step, rather than jumping right to a manned landing.

I think the thing we must accept is that both manned and unmanned missions are useful and different in their abilities & goals. Calling one "better" is over-simplifying.

  21. Re:Not the technology on FAA Pushed To Review Ban On Electronics · · Score: 4, Insightful

No, it isn't magic, but situations that require passenger intervention are about as common as magic.

Odds of dying in a flight are around 5 million to 1. Odds of a lightening strike killing you while walking outside are around 280,000 to 1.

So, if we care about safety, we should require a warning message about lightening safety before we leave the house each day.

Flying is incomprehensibly safe, yet we treat it like it is some risky activity. The time spent on safety lessons before each flight are an absolute waste of time, and should be looked at just as hatefully as a mandatory lightening safety lesson each morning.

However, to bring this back on track, the main point of TFA has little to do with the few wasted minutes of safety. It has to do with around 30-60 minutes spent waiting on the tarmac, climbing to 10,000 feet (where the electrons suddenly are safe!), and the descending below 10,000 feet, circling the airport, etc. This is the part where people are really fed up with the stupidity of the FAA rules.
