Lots of companies don't provide a CD any more - just a separate partition

I addressed that too. The company will replace the HD under warranty with the OS image if yours fails. If you don't want to pay for the CD, that is your choice.

If you're going to be so anal about keeping it within such a tightly protected area, where's the benefit in using Windows?

Larger software choice, more available support, not having to learn a new OS (same at home and work). There are benefits to using Windows, and there are benefits to using Mac and Linux. They all have things you just should not do unless you know what you are doing.

Do not think that you can idiot-proof any OS. A highly evolved idiot can break any OS unless you don't give them root. However, now the keeper of root needs to babysit the computer and approve every change and install.

If you were really asking the question "WHAT THE FUCK IT IS IN THE FREAKING STICKER UNDER THE NOTEBOOK", I have an answer: It is for the CD that came with the laptop, or the OS image that is on a seperate partition. If she lost the disc that came with it, or you repartitioned it and blew away the other image then you do not have the same software that the sticker was ment for.

By using your custom "XP Home / XP Pro" CD (I have never heard of a MS printed disc that does that), you are using a different disrtobution of XP than the one that came with the laptop. While not as drastic, it would be like trying to fix a Red Hat install with your Ubuntu disc.

Windows does just work if you treat it like a Mac. Only use signed drivers, use the OS disc that came from the factory, etc and it works. Try to take it outside of that protected area and you risk running into problems like this. Some people are very familar with XP and tweak it to do amazing things just as some take a Linux distro and customize it, although the latter has far more room to customize and far more places that you can screw up if you don't know what you are doing.

THEN, the customer would have to pay us enough to take care of the actual Internet bandwidth, DNS, email, and web space. Oh, a little bit to put food on the table too. $20 was what we charged at first, and it was at a loss. The customer paid us $20 and Verizon up to $40, so up to $60 for 768k/128k on an overloaded T1.

At the same time, Verizon started selling DSL direct for $24.95 per month. According to the FCC, they also had to pay $30-$40 to a seperate part of the company, but the money still stayed in house.

So, one user screws up and all 10,000 computers behind your university firewall are infected in a few hours. Then, all someone has to do is take their laptop from your infected network and plug it into their network. Do you have anyone on-site right now from IBM, HP or Dell? If they plug their laptop in for a patch, then go to their home network, they will spread that virus to another group of 10,000+ computers all without intervention. I cancelled my 6mb/384k cable Internet for a metered phone line (from AT&T - no choice) that is plugged only into my 1.5mb/128k DSL modem from a local ISP. I use Vonage, but now my call quality is poor since I'm getting jitter between my DSL modem and the DSLAM, probally because I'm 14,000 ft from AT&T's CO. Even though I'm not paying AT&T for DSL I'm paying them for the metered phone line and my ISP is paying them for bandwidth along with a few other tier 1's so they can have some fault tolerance. Even Dial-up would give AT&T more money than the solution I have come up with, since I would need unmetered phone service and then I wouldn't have Vonage. While Christianity has replaced the old laws and punishments (the why and how to that are off-topic here), most point to the fact that God said a life has been taken. This does not completely prove that God meant at the moment the cells start dividing, but it is safe to say that after 8 weeks a mother and father would know that the mother is pregnant, and they would know if she didn't have a child after the fight described above.

As for the animal vs human debate, most Christians would say that humans were the only animal made in God's image, and the only ones that posses a soul. A full-page ad in USA Today from November 2000: http://www.priestsforlife.org/media/00-11-02usatod ayad.htm

In that ad, the point is made: Are sea turtles more valuable than babies? We read in Florida law, "No person may take, possess, disturb, mutilate, destroy, cause to be destroyed, sell, offer for sale, transfer, molest, or harass any marine turtle nest or eggs at any time." (370.12) If we don't have the right to choose to smash the egg of a sea turtle, why should we have the right to choose to smash a baby?

So, while not opposing protection for animals, they do point out that human protections should be at least equal to, if not greater than, protection given to other animal life.
