  1. patent invention on SCOTUS To Hear Patentable Thought Case · · Score: 1, Funny

I'm going to patent the idea of inventing stuff. Ha!

  2. Finally, a use for spam! on Judge Orders Deleted Emails Turned Over · · Score: 3, Funny

There's now more spam than legitamate email in the world, right? And we're all using spam filters, yes? Why not forward all your spam to a gmail account. If enough of us do it, google will see such a drop in SNR that there won't be any point storing all those old emails. What's that you say? Still not enough data to fill the mighty google? Set your random number generator to stun...

Everything on the top-20 list comes from antiquity.

Um, that's the point, isn't it? Western (Christian) civilisation has created some interesting things over the past 500-1000 years. Let's have a look at an earlier civilisation, and see what they did.

Fifty years is a flash in history. In 3006, how many inventions from 1950-2000 will be important, or even remembered? I can't even begin to imagine what the world(s) will look like by then.

I rather like being able to search .ac.uk, and only hitting academic sites. Searching .gov.uk is quite handy to. And to all those folks out there who don't get it, if you're a shop in the UK, selling mainly to the UK, please use .co.uk. If I'm looking for bicyle parts, for example, I usually limit my googling to .co.uk. The internet might not care about geography, but the postman does.

Sorry to throw a Linux comment into a Windows thread, but here goes... There's so much talk about Linux lacking drivers, but I get the impression that Windows is lacking support for more and more devices. It'd be sad if Windows and Linux hardware support levels off in the middle, rather than Linux coming up to the Windows level. I don't use Windows any more, so maybe I'm getting the wrong impression?

  6. Data skimming on Google's New Calendar CL2 · · Score: 1

To allow Google to skim even more of your data. The calendar bit is just candy to keep the users happy. I still like my ultra portable, battery free solution with freeform user interface. That's right, a little book and a pen. I can use it anywhere. I can even add doodles.

Fair point, I guess. I thought the job as ongoing support. I made the system easier to support. My boss then decided it was easy enough to support that it didn't need an employee. I feel a bit cheated, but you're right. Onward and upward...

  8. Fujitsu Lifebook on Microsoft Origami Unfolds · · Score: 1

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook P1000. It's getting a bit long in the tooth (Transmeta Crusoe), but it's light, I get 4-5hrs life out of it with the extended battery, it has a real keyboard and a good screen. I can even wirelessly contect to the internet with it. Oh, and yes, it runs Linux. When it came out, it was impressive.

What are MS playing at? This Origami thing wouldn't have been all that impressive 3 or 4 years ago. Now it looks like a joke!

  9. Re:dispensible on Cancer Survival for Software Developers · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've managed to make myself dispensible, and lost the job. I set up an instrumentation/computer system for some psychologists, to make their fMRI experiments simpler to run. I did such a good job that my boss decided he didn't need my skills any more. Even if you play nice, your boss can still be a bastard!
