While reasearching something for the geriatric crowd - turns out that for a mere extra $24.95 you can have a deep space radio message beamed toward your star! Might as well sell them the Brooklyn bridge while your at it.
I was just thinking about that, but soon ran across this, The International Astronomical Union, which "dissociates itself entirely from the commercial practice of "selling" fictitious star names or "real estate" on other planets or moons in the Solar System. Accordingly, the IAU maintains no list of the (several competing) enterprises in this business in individual countries of the world. "
I noticed that the Miami Herald, home of Dave Barry, started asking for registration. The way it works, you get one free visit, then they want you to sign up. So I just delete cookies to become a new user again.
simh really rocks - I can run a PDP10/TOPS10 system on my 233Mhz notebook - you can telnet into it over the network. I've also run Altair 8800, cpm2.0 and have worked up many vintage software projects including the Original Adventure game in FORTRAN (on the pdp10/tops10), Star Trek in MSBasic on an Altair, and the 8008 SCELBI BASIC interpreter (running on an 8080, but it was written for an Intel 8008!). Kind of amazing to see an 8008 BASIC crank thru the floating point calculations for 'Lunar Lander';)
you can pick up perfectly usable pc's in the P3 600-1Ghz range for under $100, all the hand me downs from the clock speed race - why go to all the trouble of software trickery when you can just plug in 3 boxes, use once console and get to the others with vncviewer and terminal server.
Having said that, I would love to (have the time to) experiment with vmware;)
Ok, I'll dare to address the question of how any relationship can survive in such an environment: Frankly, it doesn't need to. In The Future®, relationships are superflulous and unnecessary as all human reproduction is handled by a corporation formed from the merging of the sperm bank, planned parenthood, and artificial insemination clinics. Certain males, selected from the gene pool after application and carefull screening, are permitted to make a 'deposit' in the sperm bank, where their 'funds' remain anonymous but are catagorized by physical characteristics. Certain select females are granted a license to reproduce when deemed necessary in light of population statistics, the desired qualities of new members, etc (do we need more scientists, hair stylists or equipment operators) and permitted to conceive (unlicensed conception is severely punished). After birth the newborn begins to spend more and more time in corporate training centers (day care) where s/he is raised to fulfill the role in society ordained for him/her.
So, all the sentiment about 'love', 'relationship' , 'romance' is completely unnecessary and dangerous to the established order and prone to produce troublemakers who don't 'fit in'. The only relationship necessary is that between the individual and the corporation.
The security and integrity of your email is due to: 1) National Law 2) Company Policy 3) The high quality of Microsoft products (bwahahah) 4) Regularly buying the SA a pint on Friday evenings
Eh, what was it, 12, 14 years ago? Downsizing was all the rage and cause of much spillage of ink and political discussion. Yeah, I think Bush the elder was king of the 'downsizing' economy, and Bush the younger is king of the 'oursourcing' economy. Lets see, before then it was 'automation', and going way back, hah, 'industrialization'. Yeah, all those steam engines were putting laborers out of work!
Here SCO attacks open source as dangerously liable to include proprietary code, yet here they are with just about every new improvement to their product IS an open source project! Lets see, it now comes with:
* Mozilla Web browser 1.6 adds new features including tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, and PDF support * Squid Web Proxy Cache 2.5STABLE5 with expanded authentication schemes, optimizes searching, SSL gatewaying, and more * Perl 5.8.4 * Apache HTTP Server 1.3.31 * OpenSSH 3.8p1 * BIND 8.4.4
any IT guy who is using HTML-enabled e-mail should have his geek license revoked
html email is coming from businesses that insist on it's customers using it. I just bought some soldering iron tips from an online electronics supplier and it's all marketed up* and difficult to read in pine. Same deal w/ ebay and countless others.
Speaking of which - are there any 'demoronizer' type utilities that can reasonably create ascii version of html email?
*marketed up - has come under the influence of marketing and their Msft overlords.
this is one reason I like to keep a good collection of old time radio programs - some of them are very entertaining and they don't tie up your vidio channels while enjoying a good story. Books on tape, etc. With OTR you can do other stuff while listening to a murder mystery, with tv your a passive observer.
Users of open source should have a few subject matter experts on the staff to audit the code used, keep up with the developement and check that code hasn't been adulterated (md5 checksums signatures etc) - they will also be responsible for custom development for the agencies purposes. That way you spread the expertise, reduce your dependancy and capital concentrations like the Redmond monster. Anyway you cut it, you don't want critical systems operated by closed proprietary secret business material and dependant on a single source who uses it to control you and 'gate', so to speak, your performance. Msft and other businesses are not bastions of military security and enemy agents who want the code can probably groom moles to get access to it and smuggle microfilm back to the paterland.
Hey, I loved the Rick Brant books since first finding them in the 6th grade. Great adventure imagination fodder for 10 year olds;)
Rick's project in "Smugglers Reef" even inspired me to build an infrared nightvision system using surplus stuff from Edmunds Scientific and an old tv set for the HV power supply.
Is simply detecting intelligent life way out there 'contact'? Seems to me 'contact' is mutual recognition of one another's existence. That is, knowing they're there while they are oblivious to us isn't really 'contact'.
Oh yeah, nothing more relevant than a 50 year old fiction philosophy by a refugee from communism. Her knowledge of the railroad industy and the dangers of monopolistic robber barrons that Teddy Roosevelt busted up is less than her knowledge about science (miracle metal? Engines that get power from static in the air? Give us a break!)
[I still think John Galt was modeled after John G. Trump who worked on electrostatic generators with Van Der Graff at MIT - in the 50's it was a generator that promised amazing effeciency but, like bubble memory and the flying car, never caught on]
The phone company generated a lot of ill will amongst their customers-with-no-choice in the 60's and 70's (see Lily Tomlin's character, Ernestine) altho their stock was always considered a good stable investment that you could pass on to your children. If history is any guide, and it often is NOT, we just might see this same pattern of crumbling happen to Msft in 20/30 years, if not sooner - a great investment, but lots of PO'd customers. Once the customers wise up to what's going on and seek better alternatives those vast monopoly profits won't be guarenteed.
The hybrid Escape uses a 200-pound, 330-volt battery pack
Why don't they just use one of these ??

Damn straight - the function of Msft and Apple is to meet the demands of stockholders, customers are just the means to that end.

I agree in theory, but in practice a vote libertarian is a vote for Bush. Just ask anybody who voted for Nader in 2000.
