  1. How can they fix this on NASA Finds 4-5" Crack in Shuttle Insulation · · Score: 5, Interesting

I know the shuttle is at the end of life, but the follow on will still need insulated tanks. The early Atlas had no insulation and needed to be fueled in the final minutes of the countdown. Clearly a problem. But any means of making the insulation crack free, thus flexable, and still able to withstand the launch, thus stiff, would require significent added mass. Mayby an outer shell of carbon composite.

    Do the Math!!

Velocity is the first derivative of Location. Accel is the second, and Jerk is the third. Solve the jerk for zeros. This locates the minimum and maximum velocity points. Plug in the location vector and get the actual maximum velocity. The magnitude of the velocity is speed. This number will be on the order of 3500 km/h on accent and probably 300 km/h decending - I do not know the drag coffecents.

Look at who is the basis for the article, Professor Bob Carter. This man is effectively a spokesman for the energy industry. He gets support from the Australian Institute of Energy. The membership of this agust body is a who's who of the oil, gas, coal, and power companies in Australia. No wonder he thinks the global climate is doing just fine.

  4. Why this REALLY is big news on Biggest Obstacle of Nuclear Fusion Overcome? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The savings may be what the article focused on, but the real news is in ability to produce net energy.

The ELM's are effectively "bubbles" of plasma that "impacts" the wall. This leads to erosion of the wall
and significent heat loss. First, the plasma cools from the contact. Second, the wall erodes and atoms,
beinging significently heavier, never really get up to temperature. Third and most important, the atoms
from the wall cause brumstrumalung(sp) radiation. Each of these is a major energy loss and principle
reasons why fusion has never really worked.

  5. Re:Lots of FUD in this article on Higher Education Fears Wiretapping Law · · Score: 1

You don't get it. I had the misfortune of doing some CALEA compliance code for Nortel a few years back. If you take the law literally and extend it to Internet access then not just the schools, etc. but all network connections would be covered. This includes any home network you may have. Every router and switch would have to provide one CALEA port for each 1-10%, depending on class, of the lines feeding into the port having a path to the public network. These are the ports NSA is using to make its "scans". Technically, a wiretap warrent is needed but it is not practial to deliver one in each case so electronic requests are built into the system. If you look like you are a trusted source then the wiretap is activated automatically and copies of the data stream is sent to the IP you provided.

During WWII they did have screen doors for submarines. They kept the bugs out while in port.

Hey, a screen door on a submarine is MORE effective than Microsoft security!

Actually, no. The individuals sent to these positions tend to be dogmatic about their industries. They typically do not understand the need for ANY regulation.
Business operates on the principle of Least Resource. Nearly without exception, industry True Belivers have been appointed over the last 6 years.

Recent fMRI studies indicate - meaning a lot of study is still needed - that anyone who strongly holds a dogma fires the nerve center cocaine hits every time they deny reality. Do you really want such people making policy?
