Ubuntu is not ready, Linux is ready and it has be ready for few years now. Only thing Linux needs is marketing. It does not need some people to promote one Linux distribution over others, like most Ubuntu users does, believing that Ubuntu is someway a "special OS". It is far away from "special" and it's lots more than "OS". (OS part is just the Linux there).

What we need, is HW vendors to provide specs or open drivers for Linux and all distributions gets everything working. What we dont need, is that we change Microsoft to Canonical, what happens when everyone demans everything specified build to Ubuntu, not by using standards and openess.

He is trying to be a person who innovates or tells what community should do, always littlebit late when he sees where the community is already heading so he gets promotion from Ubuntu users, who can then say "Mark already told what we must do".

Mark is doing good job marketing Linux as alternative OS for Windows and Mac OS X, but those who listen and reads his opinions, should understand that he is talking about current situations and where the community is already gone, and not believing that Mark is leading the community. And of course Mark is promoting own Linux distribution, because he gets money selling supports for it. What is not wrong, but the results how Ubuntu affects the whole community, could be wrong in long run. And there is few better distributions for newbies or other situations, what should be remembered and not just always promote the Ubuntu as "easiest".

OS should have just small memory usage, small CPU usage and powerfull support for different devices and applications. Just like Linux is.
Then we can choose what desktop we run top of OS so those who like to run OS so low HW usage as possible, can run it even with only a using CLI application. And those who like to have all bells and whisles ringing and shining, can install other applications like Gnome and KDE with Compiz fusion if their own window manager does not give them.

I like Linux because it is so powerfull OS, while I dont use Vista (Even I have two license, Business and Ultimate, what I have got from work and school) on my machines because they dont give me the power to customise the system how I like to have it. Linux does give me the power to build own system top of it.

Linux includes all services what are needed software to be an OS. OS does not calculate the exel files, or play the AVI files or you dont write your documents with OOo and then press it to PDF with your OS. OS just allows you to run all those applications.

You only need a Linux + Mplayer to be burned to DVD and you can just burn videos to that disk with those and you can just trowh the disk in computer and boot it up, you get mediaplayer and you can select videofiles from the DVD and play them.

If you just check all the technical requirements of OS, you notice that Linux has those all. Other kernels does not if they are microkernels so the OS services are separeted from kernel and they run in both memory space.

First computer start processing game, what loads needed (set from settings) menu graphics in the 3D card memory and run GPU process those as you have set from settings. When you move to game itself, game orders OS to move graphics to 3D card memory on quality what was set on settings. When the graphics are on the 3D card memory, GPU can start processing it and showing stuff to your screen. Then it is about GPU how fast it can draw actions and VRAM how fast it can feed the GPU with the texture and other graphic data. If you don't have enough VRAM, you GPU needs to wait CPU to transfer them from RAM and it starts slowing down the whole process and game starts looks jerky.

Same thing is on the CPU RAM Swap. If you have heavy process what eats your RAM, rest of needed RAM is taken from virtual RAM, swap. This makes things lots of slower and it does not help if you have over powered CPU because you dont have enough RAM. That's why first thing to speed up computer, is to add more RAM, if you run out it and swap is needed to use, but if enough RAM is free, then you need to change to faster CPU what can process the data. But there is third "ring" too, the bus between CPU and RAM. If you have too slow bus what does not allow fast enough data to be transferred between CPU and RAM, it does not help if those two gets overpowered.

Now add for that a 3D card what process the graphics and is responsible for drawing only the graphics (in future, physics too(?)!), while the CPU and RAM does the Physics, Animations, AI etc etc. If 3D card does not have enough VRAM so the GPU cant draw graphics as fast it could, it gets slower. If you have lots of VRAM but slow (old) GPU, it cant draw so fast if scene is complex, or use effects what GPU cant draw itself as HW, but needs to emulate them or drop off.

Thats why you have settings in game where you can order game to tell the OS what kind data needs to be loaded to memory, so the balance of VRAM/RAM and GPU/CPU gets right and the drawing is smooth, in expensive of the quality.

More VRAM > better textures / more textures loaded to very fast memory > better speeds for GPU to store rendered stuff.
