There is a finite amount of energy in the universe and it is expected to expand into infinity. That tells me that at some point energy (in whatever form is exists) will eventually be so dispersed as to render meaningful intelligent action at any single point rather... well pointless.
Time may indeed be infinite, but the amount of time we have to develop a useful space elivator is somewhat finite.
I won't bet against us ever developing such a device. A more interesting question to me is whether we develop such a thing before it is necessary or needed (translate cost effective versus other options).
Oh, sign me up for the first one way trip to another planet! I don't even care if I am alive when it gets there. It would be cool to just be amongst the parent seeds of the new humanity.
All you need is the tip of a radio antenna to receive coordinates from a satelite. That antenna could even be a dragged wire that would be flush with the ground.
The satelite itself might not be able to benefit from this technology... unless it was nuclear powered. Can't exactly hide those solar panels from light.
Maybe after a string of anti robot robots, MIT would come up with a robot that would generate a real scientific paper!
next comes your anti robot robot
then the anti anti robot robot robot
and of course the anti anti anti robot robot robot robot
and the anti anti anti anti robot robot robot robot robot ...
I could go on since cut and paste is so easy;-)
Perhaps it would be a million anti's followed by a million and one robots before something useful came out of such an exercise, but wouldn't it be cool to witness?
and we have done so without ANY meaningful public discourse upon the matter.
There was in fact no choice made; this situation has simply come upon us, through market forces.
You make the choice and cast a vote with every transaction you register electronically.
Cash is an illusion also. It is much like stocks. It is only worth what someone will exchange for it. The difference from other commodities is that we all agreed (those that use it) to let the local government set the value relative to some mythical point in space. Meanwhile the market tries to figure out how to get more of them for less effort. The government could (and probably if technically feasible would) put GPS tracking devices in every coin.
Where would your transaction privacy be then?
I say, go plastic and save your hidden transactions for other bartering or more creative ways to transfer wealth.
If you are not using SAP then you are not fully tapping out your hardware. There is no software out there (bar a few viruses and disk defragmentors that really cew up the processor, disk and memory of your computer.
Personally, I had an Apple II, then a II+, then a IIe and a Mac... Then I decided I wanted to be a programmer for a profession and...
Yes you can survive on programming Macs for large companies... oh, wait, not really. Maybe small companies or the very medium sized firms, but if you want the flexability to move around and the ability to work virtually anywhere. I have enjoyed my now 16 years as a developer on the Windows platform. I had an Apple from late '76 through '90 and do not regret the switch.
Sometimes I long for coding in Apple Basic with the low res and high res graphics, but I suspect that is nostalgia and not a rational reasonable thought.;)
Wal-Mart and Microsoft only wield the hammer we have handed them.
The USA may not be really that close to being a democracy, but commercialism is very close. Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are the ballot notes. You vote with the ones you got.
I buy my software from GameSpot instead of WM because I want to help ensure the existance to remain. There are many other stores that have gone out of business that I liked more, but those candidates are no longer on the ballot so...
I use Hotmail for all of my online stuff where I am suspicious of my address getting sold or "accidentally lost". Things like my NCAA Tournament Bracket and my Fantasy Baseball leagues.
My Hotmail account actually gets a significant amount of Junk Mail.
The advantage?
MS gets the burden of filtering it and routing it instead of my ISP for my normal account.
GMail is what I use for stuff like... Slashdot... you know, places where I don't want to look like a MS protagonist;)
They certainly have an excessive amount of hot water and electricity is needed in ever increasing amounts. I would imaging a Business Case is at least warranted.
I always suspected that Icelanders were boring.
Surely it is possible to find a place between the surface and the magma where the temperature is consistantly around the temperature we use in other power plants. We could just pipe water from that depth up to a conventional Steam Generator and create steam in the second loop. This would not require exotic materials or open us up to triggering a volcanic eruption.
Beyond this guy being surprised by the water temperature, I don't see anything here that is exotic or unusual.
Honestly I am still amazed that we don't use more thermal energy to power the grid...
Germany could buy their electricity from Iceland instead of the French who produce it with Nuclear plants across the Rhine from them since they don't want any nukes IN Germany.
Germany and France have virtually negligable part-time minimum wge jobs.
hmmm...
Even MS Word pickes up this error.
Entropy is!

Those adds are aimed at the ignorant masses who appearantly CAN see them.
This would meen your cammo would only work against intelligent people.
There is a reason we view "Military Intelligence" as an Oxymoron!
Good idea, but not for military application!
How about artillery?

There are a couple web sites dedicated to running chemical and physical experiments on Peeps. They are quite entertaining.

I don't think they travel faster than the speed of light...
The real reason to run Windows is for SAP.

What else does Iceland Export?
