So when companies are increasing their profits, you take that as a sign boycotts are working. Brilliant. Any other thoughtful insights on life you want to share with the group? We are all breathlessly waiting to hear them...

Except for the fact that boycotts against major corporations are rarely effective at all. Sony stocks are up about $10 from where they were at a low last July. And over the last 10 years (people have been talking boycott of Sony for years now) the price of the stock has hit a high of $80(2001) and a low of $17(2009) and is currently at about $35 a share.

I too prefer physical books over an e-book, but still read both. I also buy and sell used books because I read a lot, and pick up lots of books at garage/estate sales and Goodwill stores for very cheap. Try finding 4 mainstream fiction kindle books for a dollar.

I believe this is what you want - the Snow Dragon. As a side benefit, it takes the contaminants out of the snow so the water runoff can go directly into the sewers. The water is actually cleaner than when it was snow! The city of Minneapolis just bought some of these, but they are still far to small to melt serious volumes of snow. They are mostly being used downtown or in parking lots as an alternative to hauling the snow away in dump trucks.

Yeah, I was mostly making that statement to refute an earlier claim that there is no discernible difference between tube and solid state amps, and that any claims were "Audiophile bullshittery". That is certainly not the case as we have demonstrated by our discussion here. Apparently the differences you and I hear in the sound of the two different style amps is utter bullshit, and all in our heads. And an oscilloscope can prove it!

  15. Re:How sillilly obvious on Do Tools Ever 'Die?' · · Score: 1

I had this exact same discussion about 2 months ago with a group of musicians, and out of the 12 people that were there, 1 preferred solid state amps over tube amps. I am not claiming that 100% of musicians think tube amps are better, but probably a good majority.

It also depends on what kind of sound you like. if you like a "cleaner" sound, you will probably prefer SS amps. If you like a warmer "dirty" sound, you will probably like tube amps. Most of the musicians I know play in rock bands where the latter sound is preferred. There are certainly advantages to SS amps, but in my opinion the sound is not one of them.

  16. Re:How sillilly obvious on Do Tools Ever 'Die?' · · Score: 1

I am not an audiophile. I am a musician and tube amps sound better than newer non-tube amps. Look at any band that has a decent budget and notice the amps they use - yep, tubed amps. This isn't to look cool and impress people. I agree most audiophiles are full of shit with their $2500 cables, but this is not the same case. Ask any musician which type of amp is better.

  17. Re:How sillilly obvious on Do Tools Ever 'Die?' · · Score: 1

Yep, I was going to say you must not be a musician or know many if you think vacuum tubes are not still around. Amps with tubes sound superior to amps without them.

The two are not mutually exclusive either. I own a semi-automatic pistol that is also double action - you do not need to cock the hammer (or rack the slide) to fire the first round - it will cock and release the hammer with a trigger pull. Obviously after the first shot the hammer is cocked back when the slide ejects the spent round, so it is double-action on the first shot, and single action on the rest.

Meh, I would still prefer fake science over fake reality. I really don't think television shows are intended to be taken as infallible factual sources, they are entertainment. Entertainment in different categories, but entertainment nonetheless. The problem isn't tv shows not delivering real science, the problem is the expectation that they will - which is solely the fault of the viewers. If you go in expecting only entertainment, you will be less disappointed when that is all the show delivers.

Also I think you are forgetting the "fi" part of sci-fi stands for fiction. I think a big part of the debate over what constitutes "real sci-fi" and what doesn't mostly comes down to everyone has a different idea of what sci-fi really is.
