I find artcles interesting and the discussion that followed plain usual and boring really. The fact is that specialization is a driving mode of operation that helps cutting costs and focus on improving the stuff in front of you of which you may have more clue than anybody else as it is in front of you. That said it is also good if you do different tings from time to time i.e. defocus to learn new perspectives. This is one side of the story. The other is that outsourcing and focus on 3months periods of economic activity has its limits and US society and economy is starting to see the deadly part of the process. It is still not too late. Yet another facet of the story is that if a country has 60% of its economy in so called financial industry which as all industries do produce stuff in its focus area which is in this case money, then two things happen: so called talent goes where money is produced and money loose its value. Both processes are lengthy and take quite an attention span to realize what is going on. But as soon as you do you will realize that there is no way for an economy to survive if you concentrate on finance only. UK and US are a good example of this. When all these processes culminate in one big paroxysm of financial crisis then we get what we see right now. Of course a role of Chinese is not to be underestimated. Their control of money supply and value of currency means that they in principle made their economy booming, and their people supporting lavish lifestyles of US citizens with generous subsidy. This will end badly as soon as Chinese gov will not longer able to support the money value and ensure that there is a cheap labour available.
we live in fascinating times, are we not? I do not know t he anwer. I doubt if anybody does but something will happen and we will see some violent convulsions of global economy and its local counterparts. This will probably be very unpleasant for us all.
Well I do not think so (although I admit that would be nice). I think the community and so called analysts do misunderstand the way the open source actually affects us all - if we did not have all that free software with reasonable good quality we would have to pay much more for closed source. So even if majority of us stay on M$ software we should still appreciate. Gosh - even m$ should appreciate as without a good competition there is no need to improve.
The funny part in this all is that at the end it is not the quality of issues with format of documents but money. I recall IT stuff in a corporation I used to work for told me on request that the reason why we stay on m$ is because of compatibility etc and this while explaining to me why m$ word document that I opened in one environment did not look as it should because different departments used different revision of word have been installed there. Well one can only wonder how far from reality an average uninformed indiHvidual is and still world kind of works...
When I read your post and looked at the picture I thought you were right and the young boy was not a smart nerd but a smart manager, politician or lawyer to be. Yet then I went to TFA and looked at the graphs and what he wrote. What the graphs show is voltage and what what he is also talking about is the time at which the energy is produced being 50% longer in case of his model. Now this may or may not be true of course but his observation is about as much about voltage he could get from the device as about exposure time. It may bet hat it makes no difference but I find it interesting that he has reasonably well understood why oak trees waste time on leaves in some funny patterns. On top of it all this is 7yo boy - I know grown ups that would protest that burning stuff heats up atmosphere and they come in droves without even a smallest need to ask a question why fire causes heat etc. He has this need which for me makes him a reason to have hope for the future. It is a small hope but still I have now something more than I had over last few weeks worth of news (morons, greed, morons, greed, killers, morons,. greed, government morons, greed, killer, morons, greed and so on and so forth) here is a change. I am positively impressed and before that is gone or some asshole from above hovers to me to tell me how to do things even better, faster (so that I have the time to do them twice) I go to mycellar to fetch a bottle of my beloved beverage (that would be hoegaarden - excellent stuff from Belgium by the way) - I drink to this young man's curiosity about mama nature. Maybe even if he becomes a soldier he will think before killing an older guy drawing circles in the sand....
As for IT people not knowing what to block etc - in corporation I worked for years there has been a filter system based apparently on two things:
popularity of the site i.e. if external site was very popular among employees and was not on the accepted list it was blocked
black list of tags and site names - if the site was identified to contain picture with a lots of skin or with wording indicating certain type of physical activity then it was blocked
The bans could have been lifted on request (if somebody urgently needed to watch pr0n or site was blocked due to fault in screening process etc.
So IT people may not know it all but they do now quite a lot almost sufficient I would dare to say.
it is a strike against the nonsense that flows in buckets last months about how tablets in general and iPads in particular are going to change the way we work, improve efficiency, cure cancer and provide for world peace among other things. There is a set of good reasons why this will not be the case even if they may provide a good service in some areas. There is also a good reason not to discuss this too much as managers that approve budgets and policies do not have to do anything with the mess they create anyway and we common folk have hardly anything to say about the tools we are allowed to use so why bother? Let the analyst get aroused and then sink billions in another pointless push in randomly chosen direction. I see the wave of BS coming and wonder only how many will go under before it subsides.
well the telcos are legally obliged to do that eactly for the reasons of emergency. They are also obliged to keep the data safe. The actual reason while this privacy breach is an issue is that the data is stored not in telco's network but on the phone and besides possibly being sent into Jobbs' corn/carnalhole is all acceoisble fo anybody having access to the phone.as logs are kept forever. So yes there is a problem. WHether it is worth 1k$ of useless dollars I do not know and I do not care they should ask for more and sue in US but that would not go down very well with US justice or?
As for his wife doing the stuff and as a consequence he not being a security expert - you never heard of marriage and about parting things to do? His wife obvioulsy did something and he was possibly doing something else - how is this an argument for his qualifications? Another thing your assumptions that he could "considered him innocent unless he was proven guilty" is probably wrong either. The justice system does not work like this and costs that are gathering during due process can force him into bankruptcy and he still can lose anyway even if he were innocent. I think you watched too many movies like 12 angry men and some CSI shit on top and now believ the (American) justice system actually works. What a joke.
I am so shocked. Evil Samsung goes really trough lengths - they even make devices in such mischievous ways that they do not look like ours! I am sure there is a law against that!
It is not easy for your but it is easy for patent trolls - with enough cash and lawyers you can win any case or rearrange it in such way that in jurisdiction of choice your victim will not be able to defend. In case you misjudge your victim and the whole scheme backfires you can still buy the bloody thing and sue all others for infringement. It is not even patent trolls that do that - Apple is doing this these days too. Seems to be the a business model of today.
I think you have missed quite a few important details especially in bus full of nuns case i.e. body sizes, the way they were (un)dressed and what playthings they were using at the time (and in whith whom) - what is the title of the movie by the way?
great - modern version of a tinfoil hat - I was going to say that you should patent it but I suppose it is already patented as the rest of technology is patented also.
you exaggerate of course but there is something to it. Desperation in mass of unemployed young people (lots of energy) can not be underestimated. In Germany people are conditioned into bearing own poverty with dignity i.e. not to ask for help or riot or any such nasty things.
As a side thought - fighting the government (policy) is becoming increasingly difficult. The masses seems to be immobile and largely ignorant so political actions are close to impossible but at the same time the state is becoming ever more powerful in finding out who did things and how to prevent them in acting - and masses love such protection because we value our security so much. Yet the state is unable to control organized youths too much so far. It seems cameras and NSA like technology are not sufficient to contain mass rage.
There many things. One of them is the theory of economy where certain debt levels are considered safe. This is just a guess and a bet really but historically it worked this way. It also makes sense to invest in a country with such a big financial market and relatively clear and transparent legal system this offset some of the risks associated with economy that is lame. At some point comes realization that not only the levels of debt and deficit are too high but also that there is no political way to get them in balance. The american political system is corrupt to the bone but was able to handle the situation till now. it becomes apparent also for eonomists (who are just bean counters not real scientitsts not even engineers) that situation is not sustainable. There is a lot to say about how to get out of the mess but fixing deficits of your country and your state apparatus is a must. This can be done. We will see at what level of pain the fixing will start.
I suppose part of he deal at school is not only what you write but how you do it so structure and typos do make a difference too and verification of those is a tedious task. Then again - the article is then as misleading of course as it can be. OTOH there is no reason to get agitated about that - that is a norm everywhere anyway and possibly we would not have this conversation if it was not the case.
and the reason is: people get automatically educated. I wonder if Einstein with his bad ass attitude against Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich would get good notes from the some bad ass software routines? Just a thought.
I am not really questioning this of course but if you are able at some point to replace humans as teachers then they can replace also my boss - he is just breathing to get paid hefty bonuses anyway. There must be also software to replace me even at writting posts in fora like this one. I think the final consequence could be that we have no need for human interaction at all at least if you want to optimize things a bit - all things I mean. Just a thought - who is giving the mod points these days? Is it not some sort of evil machinery and if not then why not?
I see that making one sentence flamebaits goes over the filtering at slashdot - I filtered all flamebaits out and still saw yours and got so agitated that I reacted - well done - I must remember that.
You see - I still was able to learn something from you albeit that is not what you intended, was it? Maybe you can even learn something from your marxist teachers?
indeed - I think we underestimate the value of social interaction here - from what I remember the school provided me some basis for my formal education and to much bigger extent the way I should act in the society: there is nobody to help you except you self e.g. I had to resort to violence to stop being bullied by one silly guy or that the justice is an ideal not a fact and you have to fight for it to get some approximation of it or that your superiors act sometimes (how often is another matter) in a silly way and to get things done you have to bypass them and the most important one I learned at the last day at the university (graduation) - paper is patient and can stand anything. So replacing a teach with a computer here is possibly bad because of missing human factor but may also be a sign of times to come where humans are judged by machines. Whether that is a good development or not is another matter.
as somebody pointed out already a dog is a nice approximation of what human body would do in case of certain diseases. Now it is all yours to determine whether this is done to make better drugs of terms of efficiency in curing stuff, making better drugs in terms of curing stuff only as good as is enough for profit or makingstuff that kills people effectively or some other purpose. I for one would tip it is either 2 or 3 but it may be that some naive scientists lied to a politician and actually did 1 - I mean it is possible even if not likely.
what difference does this make? I mean the way things work you can say he was a part of a group and even if his tasks were of PR (as in Public Relations) nature still he can be charged with what the group did, wanted to do or was perceived of doing or intending to do. I suppose he should have been prepared anyway and that is what actually worries me quite a bit. The interesting facts about recent events (not only related to LulzSec) is that today everything is watched and you cannot really hope that your activities go unnoticed by security services everywhere. The system has now built in very strong measures to control the society in a way not possible till recently. Till recently it was not possible to monitor all the calls. Every since Omagh we know that they can. Let us hope that the evil minority will not establish itself in center of power as removing from there will prove very difficult.
were you not supposed to be in charge of who is in charge of things in your country? I thought you were. So why are you not. Maybe because most of US citizens (as do citizens of all other 'democratic' countries) think that democracy is when you go to vote which is a serious mistake. In some cases there is no way for a single citizen to participate meaningfully in any apparently democratic process. This may mean that system in fact requires retuning. This was traditionally called revolution in the past. It is an unpleasant and usually difficult and more often than not dangerous activity as the state and corrupt powers that be will do quite some to protect status quo. There is also this small little thing - technological progress that increases abilities of security services to detect and normal citizens to remove any protection of privacy that they once had. This and automation of warfare means that citizens have ever smaller influence on what is happening. This may also have something to do with the size and complexity of a state - if these grow to big the citizen stands alienated as feeling of community that is needed to form structures like state from the bottom. Of course you can build state from above. Naturally state even if a republic (by name: common thing) tends to get corrupted and flawed longer it lasts and bigger it is.
One can discuss this a bit further but that would be quite off topic here I guess.
There might be interesting ideas how to improve state of democracy in modern world: These are ignored by common folk as well as politicians because of ignorance and lack of interest. So we are where we are and hope for the best.
well and all I'd say is this: I show to Jobs a middle-finger-gesture - he should go and patent that!
we live in fascinating times, are we not? I do not know t he anwer. I doubt if anybody does but something will happen and we will see some violent convulsions of global economy and its local counterparts. This will probably be very unpleasant for us all.
