very slow in its onset especially compared with length of our lives
indicator used to show the process i.e. average temperature is very bad at having anything to do with our daily experience because it has to include average variations for the whole planet with its different climate zones and over long periods of time i.e. over daily and yearly variations. This means we use an indicator that albeit looks like something we can grasp with our little brains means nothing when we look at the temperature outside at this very moment in very specific location
difficult to stop due its massive lag i.e. even if we do something today we would have been doing it for quite some tens of years
impossible to stop because benefits of acting against the process are global but costs are local
impossible to stop because benefits of following our current ways are local but costs are global
This all means the public discussion as well as global conferences on climate change are not going to achieve anything.

At the end any situation where we get short of something that we need (or think we do) leads to strife and social disorder which can only be resolved with some politics possibly also with some violence which anyway needs politics to support it. On top of it you have empirical data from people working with extreme levels of radiations and these are not straight forward either - members of army units that cleaned up the shit in Chernobyl are mostly dead by now and those living are mostly sick yet President Carter took part in similarly adventures operation in Canada at Chalk River Laboratories in 1952 and he is still well.

It is actually irrelevant and possibly not true that such virtue is hardwired. Possibly by living in society you are conditioned into behaving like this as societies that do not have such conditioning tend to die faster so in a sense this is a meta characteristic of a society being being deployed over our head into it.
What wonders me however is whether the simulation is bugfree....
I hardly ever watch the TV (most of it is crap anyway and if I watch then I chose in advance and do not flip between channels). The phone I use has indeed lags sometimes but this has less to do with the languages or frameworks used but a lot with processors and batteries not being able to cope - not sure if they all still do it but they actually inserted slower processors into smart phones on purpose so that the battery lasts longer. Still I use my phone as a calendar, alarm clock and pin generator for my VPN connection. Occasionally I also take up calls from my boss but not all too often. Lag? what lag?
I also find the claims that java is slow preposterous - the problem lies in developers not having a clue or not having a choice and using legacy software while building fancy things on top of heavy and slow base applications. From this perspective java is to blame mainly because allows unskilled staff to fake good programming skills i.e. not code writing but thinking about how code is structured in advance. But of course I am a troll so mod me to hell for my half informed views.
It must be said though that albeit amazing for general public iPhones and other gadgets from Apple are not so much of an amazement for an average engineer that cares about good tools s/he uses. It is indeed interesting to observe that diminishing margins mean for an established company with a lot of legacy software a problem because of costs of this legacy. Attempts to produce things on the cheap mean they look for shortcuts which only decrease quality not costs. My company goes the same path Nokia (and Nokia-Simens, I am sure there are other examples) went: lay-offs, scrum introduction and oblivion. It is really fun to observe how managers this sort of exercise announce success and depart before company collapses.
I guess the way for such companies is really what I think some other vendors do: produce radio platform that is then sold to others that cannot do it on their own (Apple???) of course that works only if these others are ready to pay for it and not hire lawyers to bypass expensive development stages and just steal the radio part with impunity (Apple???). Of course that is a drastic reduction in production volumes in existing areas. Steel industry workers did have to go trough this I guess Nokia is no better then?
I think that is incorrect - what happened is that robust albeit imperfect product functioned also after a major design flaw came into light. That is not the same as an average software piece which crashes and leaves the user with the only option to reboot the bloody thing with usually no way to continue the work as it were. There is a difference and that is what the GP was getting at.

Here in Germany you usually enjoy flat rate i.e. no caps and no additional usage fees. I get the gear from ISP and here starts the trouble - some (vodafone et al) give you gear that is locked so that you can change some settings but not all and at the same time parameters of the connection may change and they do so you would need to watch or reverse engineer their protocol to have that covered. Of course I have my old gear but that is old and not as sophisticated - hence my second question.

I do not see much problem in skynet taking over rather in convincing it to do so - I mean why any conscious and semi intelligent entity would want to take over this mess we call civilization? OTOH how much of a difference this would have made - take any of so called western democracies - maybe deus ex machina will be better than our corrupt and inefficient so called representatives? If that is better what would citizens of NK or Libya say about the alternative?
