I just had to do some small script job today and with help of power tools book (scripting is not my job really) I managed quite nicely.
I recalled then the hell I had to go through when (years ago) I worked for another customer that had windouze system mostly and the problems we had with writing some sort of consistent (over different Os and office versions) scripts to do basic stuff.
I recalled also work for another big customer that actually built its own test suite as shell script language/library organized around drivers that interfaced the produced software packages.
There is really no comparison. *n*x systems that had usefull features were available decades ago. What a shame redmont did not have to and did not take notice,
There are few things that state can do to help cure imbalance in this particular area. The question is whether the ones making decisions have the brain capacity and will to do so.
1.'market is evil and asocial' they cried and nationalized the health system with grave consequences for the system itself, budget and people 2. only free market can cure the health system - they shouted and let private sector decide - the result is that insurance companies have so much power that any single citizen or a group thereof has no chance against them monsters, the system is a danger for everybody and their money. USA has the most expensive health system in the developed world but with not so good service. It is a shame that in some domains it has fallen behind Cuba - how could this be?
As we see the system out of control sucks up money either through taxes or directly. What can be done? One can allow private companies play on the insurance market but condition that they have to accept all citizens living in the area of their operation to have basic insurance. In this way they will suddenly standing on the side of citizens to combat costs and pay well the health centers (which have to care for patients to get money paid) that do it well and efficient. The poor can get (if the rulers decide so) the basic insurance paid by the state or let rot in their shandy towns but at least the health system stays healthy. But wait this would mean that you haveto use brain to mix free market with state control and allow for quality control in health service. This would annoy following groups: 1. health service people: doctors, health center directors, drug store owners etc because suddenly they will have to fight against insurance companies and the controllers instead of being busy inventing ways to suck money out of patients. 2. gov officials because they would lose part of the perks - the health insurance world would not have much interest in bribing them, neither the health service people, and think about all these money that would flow OUTSIDE the state control! 3a. intelligent citizens because they learned from experience - you hear social or health system reform then this means they want to take more of your money so that they can provide less service. 3b. less informed citizens because they think market means evil and any change means less and worse service
The case here is not of downloaders getting punishment. The case is that people at large can get punished bacause they cannot afford the the costs of defense and/or are not even informed a case is brought up against them. If that is so than the system in which such injustice is possible is not much different from one in which execution squads are sent out every time e.g. somebody mentions human rights or unisons or whatever. This has nothing to do with the question of downloaders being punished or not.
if court saw benefit in such action I see no reason why it should not give verdict the way it did. Sending people to prison is usually last resort and if it can be avoided and at the same time does not brake the system it is then I suppose OK to give such people other sentence than prison - they should be punished though as otherwise one may thing that one get away with one's unlawful deeds.
I know that there are people out there that would argue that because it is not his fault (he is sick) then he cannot be held liable for his malfunction but the purpose of punishment is not only to punish but also to provide reason not to do things that society or its parts see as wrong. The victims of AS with all its deficits are intelligent people thus they can understand the consequences of his actions i.e. lack of empathy does not mean that one has to do things like killing others or do damage to the property etc as s/he sees fit. If they cannot understand what they did then they cannot function properly so they should be locked up in an sanctuary so that they do not harm themselves or others. It seems this i not the case with the boy.
I must protest. Your post may be perceived as attack on all attempts to rightfully put blame on others who in such cases should have gotten the blame in the first place but by mistake did not.
I must say that it may be not right but while employed as an maintenance engineer I enjoyed proving that fault reoport issuer is wrong big time. Sometimes I exaggerated slightly and by using appropriate argumentation I sometimes forced the issuers of fault reports to beg to send them back but what heck some fun must be there too and if the tester was good we could have quite nice discussion about the fault (in some rare occasions ended in a resolution of a problem) possibly involving philosophy and sense of life etc. These were times, What a pity that all R&D has been moved to Zamunda and now the chances for a enjoyable discussion are gone. I moved to QA and the bastards that deal with fault reports now do not even pretend to speak English so abusing them in a nice sophisticated way makes no sense at all - they get agitated even before somebody starts telling them that possibly they have made a mistake.
Democracy is a funny thing. I thought of it once in a functional sort of way and came up with the following three characteristics 1. people choose what is to be achieved (goal) 2. people choose how to achieve the chosen goal 3. people choose who is to lead us there
If you take these three and measure our western societies against them we will see that none except maybe the Swiss live in democracy. OC it is complicated to govern and make rules but if I see that my vote is nullified by sets of say less informed (masses) and by much smaller set of very well informed (political establishment) then I do not have motivation at all to even that and get myself a beer instead of participation in life of a democracy.
so get rid of aristocrats and give votes to those that actually did something to improve their own value - see there for an example how it could look like: http://www.globalvoter.org/englisch/index.html technology that allows direct democracy is there - why not try?
Chances are you are not one of the chosen ones and have neither skill nor lack to be born in the right spacetime in order to become another Stalin, Einstein, Ghandi or Hendrix etc. This means that being at least mildly intelligent as the rest of us on/. you may at some point realize that you have wasted (or never had) your chance to become somebody that made a difference (or who made a difference that is not negligible). This point is around 40. OTOH you may have made a difference to few people you love which is all that matters. I for one do not envy people that 'made a difference'. They either end up being monsters or have a problem with the ways humanity uses their achievements - I suppose Einstein was not all that happy about Hiroshima and nuclear arms race either.
The population growth in western Europe is still positive. At least that what wikipedia thinks it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_growth According to the same article global population growth rate has stopped slowing down and got higher again in 2007.
1. My grand grands lived to late 80ties and procreated at this late age too. 2. Flue vaccine does not extend your life, it prevents (together with other means) early termination.
In other words - it is indeed true that we have a better chance of living longer than our fathers but that is because our parents lived in very unhealthy environment. It is rather unlikly that current young generation will further increase their life expectancy especially if they continue to eat pizza and go to macdonalds for 'food' and grow obese in a process. What happened in developed world last 50 years or so is that we avoid mass nation wide slaughters, we had eliminated many reasons why people died early in life and thanks to raised standards of living many of us is able to live life in relatively good health till the sad end. Whether this end can be pushed much further I doubt and I doubt that it makes sense. Still I do not doubt that attempts will be made and that money will be had in this area especially as magic potion market seems to be flourishing.
Not sure if that is true - they may include some algorithms that will introduce some small variation once in a while thus allowing the masses not to get scared by unknown but to proceed into new realms albeit slowly. Maybe this would be something tunable too? Whichever way they coded it such algorithms tend to work better with simple people. I do not have anything against simple people in fact I always aspired to be one but I got laugh attacks sometimes when similar tools in music realm try to guess what I could like.
Let us think of it as a legitimate goal - to have all information instantly, allow them to come to your consciousness all at once, so that you can be aware of them all at once too, this state has been possible to achieve without google or amazon or even (oh my god is it possible?) internet - the substances used by people already thousands of years ago had the same effect. They are illegal in majority of places/. is read though so spending zillions on needed infrastructure and getting fat in the cellar while operating it seems to be a fair price to learn all the shit all at once.
That is fascinating - somebody came up with another way to dig patterns in mountains of data thus creating even more data to dig into and people claim it is intelligence, wisdom or knowledge and that everything changed. It is true of course. One big change between now and then (whenever that would be) is that today any ignorant connected to internet and equipped in basic reading skills is able to claim he posses all the knowledge of the world. Sadly the fact that more people have more and easier access to any information has changed one thing: they do not have to think for themselves they can read the answers on the web. In a sense nothing has changed though - reading with understanding is limited to the very few intelligent knowledgeable and (even bigger rarity) wise people. As for author of software in question - maybe knowledgeable fits him to some extent.
2. this article says that Bavaria did NOT managed to extend existing proposal on searching, eavesdropping etc, existing proposal is maybe not that nice but it was apparently less harmful politically than the Bavaria's extension.
Besides similar laws (lows?) already exist although not really in such drastic form. OTOH secret services do what it wants anyway - Germans violated its own and other countries' law to get account data of tax criminals. I believe there are countries where even suspicion that evidence was produced illegally or on information received illegally would nullify the whole proceeding. In Germany it apparently is not that important how you get your data as long as you can prosecute whoever you want. I guess each country has its quirks when it comes to powers that the state has.
Implanting the growing green stuff where it was not before could be beneficial for everyone indeed. The only problem is that the type of green that maybe beneficial in such places is not good on the golf field for instance.
While I am here - anybody else think TFA looks like commercial? I wonder also what internet has to do with the mobile network positioning systems that actually detected the 'stolen' item. Only I wonder how 'stolen' it really was as it moved back miraculously after a while.
TFA offers also insights into how police should not work I suppose - OTOH they achieved the goal of getting the stuff back without involving expensive judiciary etc so maybe it made sense to do it that way?
As for monkeys this has been tried many times. Sadly some of the monkeys I saw had degrees in computer science. Good thing about these degree monkeys - they did not defecate on the keyboard (at least the ones I knew did not) which the real monkeys did when confronted with similarly daunting task: http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/multimedia/2003/05/58790
It may be just a hunch but I think the parallel processing will take some time and brain power to use properly and it is going to stay this way for a while.
I do not want to see your fat body and this has nothing to do with bible, why should it have? Besides what this has to do with the case in question? Pornographic website is something else than waling around naked (and bumping on each other) - I can click my way around without looking if I wish to. OTOH If my naighbours start taking sun baths naked I will not be happy. I can understand people being offended by such unaesthetic show of fat meat but I do not care as long this does not cause disruption to my life - crowd of curious people may be disturbing and I will try to remove the reason for a distraction if it disturbs too much.
it does not really matter whether this is the bible or rule of law. If the society in general does not wish to be confronted with fat people making strange noises than it is so. I do not mind being seen by whoever pervert wants to look through my windows when I do it with my wife, my wife does and that pretty much resolves the issue for us. I suppose the same applies to large groups of people. However the case in question is not about fat bodies making noises in public but about ISP hosting 'obscene' service i.e. most likely you have to log on to see anything or at least you have to click on some link to get there. This makes it different and thus I do not think the courts have anything to say about it as although it is available for t he public it is possible to avoid it if one wants.
What judge will decide is another thing altogether. They have their own view and possibly this will go all the way to supreme court where it gets treatment 'once and for all'.
I am not sure about 60thousand years - I studied once history of my family and got back to the end of 18th century. The records in this particular part of Europe end or should I say start then.
What I saw is that my grand grand born in XVIII century got married second time and had a kid in late 80ties of his life. He was a simple farm worker. The life span of others were similar. It changed when the area they lived got industrialized - life span of working men went down to 40 around end of XIX and beginning of XX century. It recovers significantly afterwards sign of reaction to bad working conditions (sick worker = not efficient worker). I suppose this varied a lot from place to place and time to time so talking about short lifespan and high mortality rates is not entirely correct.
and outside one may get onto these creatures, they call them women, strangely they all wear clothes and behave differently than in documentaries that we like to watch between coding sessions.
I do not know what this all fuss is about. Women? in times of fast broadband I can have any pr0n I want and I do not have to spend time&money on trying. Besides it is not that nice outside of my cellar.
This and the fact that young people do not want to invest their time in (software) engineering because it is a big investment (education) and it is on their part, not on companies and this investment is a big chunk what software companies' costs are. This makes it easy to off shore the hell out all these expenses - that translates into no job security at all. Better to manage things than to produce things. Suing other people or big organisations seems also to be an attractive alternative. If you cannot do anything but have good sucking skills and durable anus you can get some dough in entertainment, other than that you can become investment banker or politician - that is about the same skill level required i.e. no morals and good nerves. I wonder sometimes why I became an engineer but I know I was under influence then. Or so it seems.
This of course is not all true but before people get to their senses things get lost. That is why UK have almost no manufacturing base at all.
