Actually, professors pay is linked to how much money they can bring in. Since engineering or science profs can usually bring in more money than english profs, they are paid better.
Teaching is not the main purpose of the professors. And it's nothing new - I learned about it 35 years ago.
This is the part that gets me. I've replaced my furnace with a high efficiency model. Replaced my water heater with a high efficiency model. Drive slower than others, driving a more efficient car than most. Chase after the kids to turn the lights out, etc. Build a high efficiency PC. In other words, I do take an effort. But I'm not carbon neutral - because I didn't go out and buy the anti carbon tickets. Quite a few of "the vaunted twenty households" don't have the extra cash to buy them, either.
Al Gore. Reinvents himself as Mr. Enviroment. But he doesn't "pay the price" in his lifestyle - he just buys a low carbon title. They probably cost him the equivalent of a couple of speaking engagements.
I just replaced my 8+ year old machine. I had 384 MB of memory and a matrox G200, and it ran Centos 4 just fine, and it was good enough for OO, gimp, and the web. But way too slow for video. Couldn't watch DVDs, or larger screen avi/mp4/mkv etc without alot of dropped frames.
I just built a system using an Antec p150 (white version of the Solo, and comes with an 80%+ efficient PS), with an Abit NF-M2 motherboard (6150 based), and a AMD 4200 X2 (68 watt max TDP). It more power efficient than a Core2Duo, and while not as fast as the C2D, more than fast enough for my needs. But it is no gamer's system.
I've been using Centos 4 (RHEL 4), and when the disk died, I tried Mandriva 2007. (I've played with various versions of Mandriva/Mandrake 7.3,8.1,10.1 - each time for several months), and I'm back at Centos 4.
We have a rear projection LCD tv, and in the first two years went through two bulbs - which was covered by the extended warranty. We haven't had a failure recently, but we don't watch as much tv now.
I always say "Linux is free, if your time is worthless" (I really should say OSS instead of Linux there of course)
I spend more time dealing with Windows problems (XP home & pro) at home, than I do with Linux problems. Windows isn't free, and it costs more of my time.
They have no qualm with harming a person. Maybe they normally see no reason to, but they would if they felt like it.
That describes our cat. And my sister in law's cat is worse.
Yes, a nonvenomous bite won't kill you, but it won't feel good, either.
Bites from cats and dogs don't feel good. I had my dogs attacked twice by loose dogs, with one time requiring a trip to the vet for stitches due to the bites from the other dog. Both times the attacks were unprovoked and my dogs were on a leash. My wife has been attacked and bitten by a doberman. And there always are items in the news where people are mauled or killed by dogs.
Of course, none of these things would keep me from getting more dogs....
Why should they be respected? They are stupid, unpleasant, dangerous creatures.
All animals are "stupid" compared to humans. That does not make them less interesting.
Unpleasant? Maybe if you have a phobia. Our cat is unpleasant. Our snake is pleasant.
Dangerous? Excluding the venimous snakes, all but the largest snakes are not dangerous. And with reasonable care, even the largest species of snakes are not dangerous - just like with dogs, where even the largest breeds of dogs are not dangerous with reasonable care.
They should be feared because they are often very dangerous.
With a little rewording, much of what you have said can be used against cats and dogs.
Our daughter has a cat - she admits that our son's boa is a much nicer pet. And her friends all like the snake, and like to hold him.
So when then do something wrong, e.g. get out of your home, people won't be scared and will just act like it's a dog?
You realize that many people are afraid of loose dogs? And the chance of getting hurt by a loose dog is *far* greater than from a non-venimous loose snake.
We don't. And we have a nice HDTV, with an OTA HD decoder. And lots of DVDs to watch.

I believe the UK has a court system, which is perfectly capable of handling a problem when a seller and buyer of an item have a disagreement. Which is how effective if the seller moves to Dubai?
The biggest unreliability with Windows is the stupid things that users do.
And having to give "adminstrator" privleges to users so they can run certain programs. And having it as the default setting when you create an account.
My HD TV Antenna was about $20.00 - all you need is a decent normal UHF antenna. It's the set top box (if your HD TV doesn't have a built in HD tuner) that costs $, not the antenna.
I grew up in Michigan a loooong time ago. Very few people had 4 wheel drive vehicles, and front wheel drive was almost unheard of. But we still got around in the snow - just slap on a pair of snow tires and go.
Can I get a burka barbie? In pink??????
BRING BACK THE PONIES!!!
Only if you promise to be good and give me 5 billion dollars.

This is an example of Gorespeak:
I'm on the Al Gore diet: I eat as much as I want, and pay somebody else to starve.
Just go over to www.talkorigins.org, and do a search on cremo. His works are easily disproven.
Remember: They laughed at Galileo, but they also laughed at bozo the clown.
In 1991 I had a SGI 440 GTX as my personal computer. I increased the memory to 256MB - it cost $40K using third party (kingston) memory.
I've been using Centos 4 (RHEL 4), and when the disk died, I tried Mandriva 2007. (I've played with various versions of Mandriva/Mandrake 7.3,8.1,10.1 - each time for several months), and I'm back at Centos 4.

The great conspiracy is alive and well. World domination is our next goal.

I guess they started going downhill when they bought QDOS to compete against CP/M.
