Take that $1000 a year and put it into an IRA. You will get more from that than your cell phone could ever return.
Only someone who doesn't have a real job or own a small business could think that. Honestly, if the increased productivity of having a smart phone doesn't give me a better return on my investment than I could get with an IRA then I must be a pretty dim bulb.
*This is how....., Tesla became Tesla*
Wait, what? When did Tesla become a viable company rather than a Wired.com masturbatory aid? Oh yeah, it didn't.
Otherwise I don't have a problem with your post.
This is easily the best slashdot story ever. I freaking love it. There is no way this isn't awesome. Either these guys are batshit crazy or it's true. We can't lose.
I might be misinformed but it is my understanding that the real issue here is that Amazon insits on collecting the same amount of revenue from a $9.99 eBook sale as it does from a $24.95 hardback sale. Because of that the publishers were left with practically nothing.
Instead, build long tunnels between major cities, evacuate them down to between 0 and 3 psi, and run high speed trains through them. The trains would need very little energy to run thru the extremely thin atmosphere, and the pressure diffential can be used to generate electricity when needed. 2 birds, 1 stone.
Yeah, the energy expended to create and maintain the vacum will magically be returned doubled. Yay, free energy forever!! All the birds in the universe by one magical stone.
This, in my book, is what it's all about. The relevant information was shared with people in a position to understand it and analyze it.
It'd be a whole different story if the public wasn't filled with a bunch of ignorant whack-jobs, trying to smear scientists. When we're trying to do science, we'd rather do science than defend ourselves against hacks with a public soapbox. If you want access to the data and the code, go to a school and study the stuff. All the doors are open then. The price of admission is just having some vague idea wtf you're talking about.
Man, this is why people hate academics. You are saying that in order for me to have the right to look at your work and possibly criticize your methods I have to join your club? I can't possibly recognize shitty conclusions or biased thinking without devoting 10 years of my life to fitting in with your particular little group. You are not a scientist you are bureaucrat.
p.s. Kiss my ass
There are periodically arguments of ideological integrity vs. pragmatism in all areas. I usually react by asking "which foot do you use to walk?" or "when you climb a mountain, to you look at the path to the summit or to your feet?". Both ideology and pragmatism are required. If you use only ideology, you will not get anything practical done; if you use only pragmatism, you get something done, but it may well be in the wrong direction.
Wow, if you are being ironic you are a freaking genius and I bow before you. If, however, you take yourself seriously enough to actually craft pseudo fortune cookie crap like that and mean it, I mock you from the depths of my very soul.
*One of the reasons we aren't mired in huge amounts of empire building these days is because the major powers are largely bound by international law*
Wow, that is one of the stupidest things ever written. Do you really believe that "international law" is the reason for anything? International law exists to make juvenile douchebags feel better about themselves.
Empire building is expensive. It is cheaper to trade than occupy, that is the only reason empire building has gone out of fashion. Dumbass
They should design hybrids so that the transmission switches the energy source. Higher gears switch to battery power, lower gears switch to gasoline.
That's pretty much the opposite of what you want. Electric motors develop peak torque at low RPM, gas engines at high RPM. In fact I wonder about the losses in the additional transmission if you want to drive the wheels from the gas engine; mechanically it makes more sense to use the electric all the time (much simpler transmission) and run the gas engine at a constant speed (more efficient) to keep the batteries charged.
Holy crap, you are seriously like one of five people I have heard that seems to actually understand that. Don't get me wrong, it is not like I am some kind of expert but dang, nobody seems to get that.
I am just wondering, right now, what real world application works better at 100 Mbps than at 10 Mbps? Don't get me wrong, I am sure that we in the U.S. are stupid and backwards and our country sucks ass, I am just wondering what wonderful things the Japanese are experiencing that I am not.
Honestly, I don't mean to be a snot, it is just that I have had both a 20 Mbps connection and a 2 meg connection and I could never really tell the difference. Are there websites that will feed you content at more than 1 or 2 Mbps?
Please do not flame too hard. I am scared.
If you believe that humans are causing the climate to change, the answer is fewer humans. Lots fewer.
Or the answer could be that each human should have less impact, starting with those with the MOST impact... the people in the USA.
There is a linear relationship between wealth and so-called "environmental impact". People in the U.S. pollute or generate more C02 emissions or whatever because they have more money.
So your solution to the problem is making people poorer? Let me know how that works out for you. And, oh yeah, congratulations on turning 17, dumbass.
Dude, you are a freaking genius! It is amazing how often my brain flashes to that scene when I am reading something about some new material science advance. Scotty kicks ass.
You don't get it. This company is banking on there being more value in their market area than the big boys believe. They are hoping to be able to pick up spectrum in their out of the way corner of the country and build a profitable business. Then once they have snapped up all the customers that are available they will either continually make money or sell the company to one of the big boys at a tidy profit.
I think a lot of people don't understand the way ISPs make their money. They buy bandwidth and then resell it at prices that are determinded by "average" user rates. P2P throws the math all out of wack. I mean, if the ISP buys say 45 megs/second they then turn around and offer like 2500 people 1 meg connections. That works because lots of people use the internet for occasional downloads, surfing, maybe some skype, and email. All things that only use the full advertised speed only once in a while. P2P, on the other hand, can eat up the full advertised speed all the time. In effect, instead of reselling the 45 meg connection 2500 times ISPs could give 1 or so 50 heavy P2P users essentially dedicated connections.
Of course the ISPs should just be more up-front about their pricing and usage policy but people that want to do things that require business class connections should pay for one.
Americans are stupid and so are there movies. Wow, you really are sophisticated and cosmopolitan. Screw you and the irrelevant crap-hole you hale from. If it were not for American economic and military might you would have nothing and be nothing, you ungrateful douche.
Are you freaking crazy? You are telling me that you were not aware of any negative stereotypes about the "nerds" on slashdot? About them not having girlfriends and never getting laid and spending all of their spare time pretending to be bi-sexual asian schoolgirls online? Of course I was making fun of them, you stupid &%$#!! The best part, though, is that you have proven to be just as socially retarded as any of the geeks that fit the stereotypes.
Are you retarded? I was making fun of the stereotypes the even people on slashdot have about about people who read slashdot and it was hilarious. If anything, my intent was to completment you for not being afraid to go against those stereotypes, but you had to go and ruin it by being a bitch and an idiot.
OK, why is anybody even bothering to answer a post that is so obviously fake. There is no such thing as a girl on slashdot. Go back to your all "lesbian" love shack on second life, Hazuma, you liar.
Who in the hell thought is was a good idea to just hand billions of dollars worth of spectrum over to these people in the first place? Did anybody really think that the local chapter of Bob Barker's Spay those Critters Club was going to effectively use valuable spectrum? The schools and NPOs let their licences lapse and I am supposed to feel bad for them? Wow, yet another brilliant resource redistribution scheme that didn't work out, what a freaking shock.
Does that mean that we should all turn our noses up at the ATI drivers that are coming from Novell? No matter what else you think you heard or read, that facts are that Novel and its relationship with AMD is the only reason the OSS world is finally going to get a 3D graphics driver.
i.e. = id est = that is e.g. = exempli gratia = for example
Dude, I can't even tell you how many times I have wondered what those letters stood for. I bet better than 95% of us don't know how to use those properly. You rock. Now all I need you to do is sign off on your posts with a little example of how to punctuate those in a sentence.

My internet fu is weak, but I searched all over the linked to article and I couldn't find the word "broken" anywhere. What am I missing?
