Yeah, you're missing something. They don't have to do anything, as long as they don't want to update their distribution. As soon as they want to switch to the next glibc, gcc, linux kernel, gnome, or whatever else that is using the new GPL license, it will apply to them.
But yeah, if they wish, they can keep the GPLv2 versions of all software, and keep updating them in parallel.
I wonder what you mean by that. Some year ago we hit the 2GB limit of the SD-specification, which meant that they had to design a new standard, SDHC, and update all firmware. It also caused problems because some manufacturers patched their own 4GB support, which is not SDHC compatible.
When the first SD cards came, 8MB was a quite normal size, and now we hit the 2GB limit. This card is going to be released in an 8GB version, and will quite soon hit the 2TB limit.
I bought a music player that can play free formats. It shows up as a normal USB memory stick. I store my music as normal files, sorted as I wish in folders. Where is the problem?
Ahh.. I'll try to parse your initial message again. When you say "same", you don't mean they are all using the same key, but each developer is using his/her own personal key, that does not vary between add-on updates.
How would this work? Either they would have to check all code themselves, before signing, or they would let the developers sign their own code, in which case the signing key would be freely available to anyone that wants to sign their malware replacement update.
It could be YOUR company benefiting from your idea.
If I had a company and thought the idea would bring in a lot of money, I would use it, not just put it out there and stop others from using it for personal gain. However, apparently the company could use my idea in a better way than I could, and by magic, the whole society gained, because they got a better/cheaper end product.
not to engage in self-censorship, resist by all legal means the demands to censor information, inform the user in case their information was provided to the government, and generally not to store sensitive user data in the countries with below average free speech policies. As this proposal, if passed, would effectively mean the end of Google's China operations
I fail to see how this would end their operations in china.
It's not self-censorship if they are forced by law to do it.
They can resist by all legal means to censor information, but if it's illegal to display a certain type of information, they are complying with the law.
As far as I know (I may be wrong here), Google need not submit any user information to the Chinese government.
...nor do they need to store user data in China in order to operate there, at least no more than a temporary cache couldn't solve (where temporary means a couple of minutes for each user)
I see the RIAA did a good job with you. You are confused when you hear "steal", and think it means "copyright infringement". The reason to steal a DVD is that they can sell it to someone else for real money. Not because they want to copy it.
They will be mightily inconvenienced when they get home just to realize the cashier forgot to swipe it through the activator. Something that will happen, and not just once. Possibly if this device is the same one that disables the alarm, then you would at least notice on the way out.
There's a much easier and obvious way to save the lives of US soldiers, but unfortunately I only want to provide that information on a need-to-know basis.
God commanded, "Be fruitful and multiply." To who did God say this? Did God say how long we should multiply? Until there is no more room left on land? Until there is no more food left? Humans have multiplied for many years, maybe God think it's enough now? Without knowing much about when God gave this command, I can still be quite sure we have multiplied by at least a factor of one million since then, eradicating many species since then. Was this what God intended?

You can (and they probably do) have a chip with a special checksum algorithm that checks the contents of the flash, to see if it matches the checksum.

Freshly googled!

Whooo ooo ooosh!
This is not about updates to Firefox - it's about updates for user-supplied add-ons.
It's easier and cheaper to fix broken software, not so easy to fix broken hardware. I'd rather see SONY in the gutter any day before Microsoft.
Yes, it's slashdot. Which means that anything that's bad for SONY, is good for karma!
Pay more? For our right to read the information you have bought for that specific purpose? Thanks!!!
Yeah, if you construct it in the way that the government wants you to! Read this explanation why the MIT study was flawed.

How is it a loss for me if a company benefits of my idea?
Oh yeah? I bet that in 5 years, he won't consider that a very fun thing to joke about!
I fail to see how this would end their operations in china.
Or what did I miss?
