Given that the effective useful life for flash memory in thumbdrives seems to vary between 10,000 and 100,000 write cycles, what does this bode for the long-term performance of SSDs as the primary mass storage device, particularly for, say, the dedicated swap space for the OS? Any computing that hits the swap space heavily is going to be thrashing the lifespan of the drive. SSDs can be faster and have lower power consumption, but if you have to replace them more often, they're going to have to be cheaper than platter drives to make them better.
Thumb drives are cheap and use cheap chips. It's my understanding that SSD's are made with flash that is better made for frequent writes. If it wasn't, i don't even see why they make SSDs, since CompactFlash cards already use a standard IDE interface.
Anyone have some info on this? -Taylor
Distasteful video, no...more like physical abuse on a handicapped. He threw a cleanex box at him...thrown the right way, I can really damage you...so you want me to be able to throw boxes at you, why stop there....the person who filmed this video, did not care to interfere and should get some consequence, as well, this might trigger him giving up his friend who actually did commit the crime.
Its called a hate crime (however minor) and involves physical abuse...how about i come by your house and violate your mother or father in front of you and post it on YouTube, I am sure your tune would change then....always with the attitude "well if it doesn't happen to me, then why should I care"
Whoa, calm down there, as i said in a comment below:
Or for assaulting a kid with Down syndrome...
Yeah, sorry, i misread the article. I was thinking it was more of a playful thing that was just distasteful, not a harassment/assault thing. -Taylor
I was thinking it was some kids playing around in a non-violent way, and it was getting blown out of proportion. I didn't realize it was more than that, i don't support hate crimes! -Taylor
I met him once a couple years ago. Really old (he's passed now) but he had a pretty interesting story. The part that really gets me is he never made a penny from inventing the mouse, aside from his salary at the company. He should have been made rich though! -Taylor
I agree with you, and think that certain regulation should be implemented that mimics certain countries laws. That would be the person who shot the video, no the person who is hosting the server that let someone post the video. I am not sure(as I never read the articles) but if the person is guilty of not screening, then I don't think there should be punishment, but if there is a way to track the person who filmed the video and posted it...they are the ones who should get charged.
Charged with what? Putting a distasteful video on the internet? Do you know what kind of precedent that would set? Not that the current situation (suing google) is any better... -Taylor
Just kidding, i didn't post that. Hah. Or did i? Really i just wanted to ensure that if someone stepped up to the plate after this, it would be sufficiently confusing that one could never know if they were really the OP! Hah! Oh god, i need a life... -Taylor
I think i learned this in high school when waiting to buy stuff at lunch. See a friend? Go say hi, start talking, act like you're not going to buy anything, and then when your friend gets to the front, look kind of surprised and "decide" to order something. Or instead, say "thanks for saving my spot", which people somehow value as a legitimate line technique. At a concert, try "hey man, wow, it took me forever to find parking!".
Now give me my god damn nobel prize.
What the hell is it with "researchers" doing projects that i figured out in high school? -Taylor
This is extremely fascinating. I'm not quite sure how it becomes news for nerds. But fascinating none the less.
Maybe you're being sarcastic, but i really don't see why this is interesting, really. Upon reading the article, it seems to me the guy has the reasoning powers of a shrew - it was obvious to me after seeing just two identical signs with different addresses that this company must be doing this all over the place. The author makes it sound like it's some crazy complex conspiracy and blah blah blah. Hey, guess what!? BayAreaHelpWanted.com is also part of a similar situation! There is also SacramentoHelpWanted.com and a bunch others. Gasp! Someone is using location specific domain names as a way of appearing more local!
Next he'll find out that the Shane Co. is not a local mom and pop diamond company, but a huge nationwide chain, with ads targeting specific areas (our ads only mention the 3 local stores, for example, and Tom Shane always makes himself sound so down to earth that he couldn't possibly be the head of a huge chain).
Really, i'm surprised that anyone is surprised by how this works. -Taylor
The size of the 3M version is 11.5 x 5 x 2.2 cm (that's about 5 inches by 2 inches by.8 inches for those who haven't evolved).
The Optima is "2 by 4.1 by 0.7 inches, weighing 4.2 ounces."
What we need is a head to head by a reputable, unbiased website.Like Gamespot maybe.
Well, i said pocketable, not smaller. It's.9 inches longer and.1 inches thicker. For a higher resolution image and $100 less, i'll deal with the added size. But actually, the dell pico projector suits my needs more than any of these, even though it's larger. As soon as it drops back down to $400 (i saw it for ONE DAY recently, but i was broke), i'm going to get one. -Taylor
3M makes and sells a very pocketable battery powered projector already. It has been for sale for a couple of months. Has better specs too, and it's cheaper. I'm not sure why we have articles that ignore stuff like this. I know we can't be experts on everything, but man, the author couldn't do a quick google search for pico projectors? -Taylor
A non-replaceable lamp on an LCD projector? No thanks.
That's 4 cents an hour to use it, if you factor the cost over 10,000 hours. That's 32 cents per 8 hour day. If you use a projector in a business setting for 8 hours and you can't afford 32 cents per day, you, sir, have bigger things to worry about. -Taylor
nice! didn't know. Also, shape search could be a factor, as they are searching for easy detectable body part (mostly)
Yup! I've taken it on myself to learn computer vision lately with OpenCV, it's pretty cool! Shape would be tough as people take so many different forms. Face detection is pretty easy though, for faces of a similar pose (upright and looking at the camera is best, but others can be trained). Face and skin could be porn!
'Human skin tones' is a pretty wide range though. Even just restricting it to 'white' people gives you a big range of colours if you consider the various shades of tan / sunburn - anything from deep red to pale white through dull brown. If you want to find naked black- or yellow-skinned people then it's an even bigger range. If something is blue or green you could probably guess it's not naked skin (unless the person is bruised, or wearing body paint), but without factoring in shape as well it's pretty difficult to tell if something is human coloured or not.
Actually, human skin is pretty much all the same hue, it just has different saturation levels. If you convert each image to HSV from RGB, you can just look at the hue component and people all pretty much look the same. This is common in computer vision techniques for identifying skin. -Taylor
Found something: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2i_6j55bS0 Its so silly now it almost seems like a joke. Luckily the people from MIT actually do seem reasonable, but the newscasters and their production team are just crazy. Man, i can't believe 1988 was 20 years ago... I was 4. -Taylor
It seems to me that the number of incidences where this could possibly be an issue is astronomically slim. Need picture of key, need to know where the key goes, and need the method of duplicating key with picture accurately enough to be of use. Then there has to be a pretty impresive reason why any of the other less complicated and faster ways of breaking in wouldn't be useful.
I dunno, i have a 10 Megapixel SLR camera with a telephoto lens that says otherwise. I could take 20 pictures of you in 3.1 seconds, and zoomed in, with ten megapixels to work with, i could get a good photo of your keys. Sitting in a car on your street doing this, i'd have no problem figuring out where the keys go. -Taylor

No, Doug Englebart invented it at SRI.

Do you know what kind of precedent that would set?
None, as the Italian law system is not based in common law and therefore does not have the notion of precedent
Ah, well then, interesting.

Not true. Pale skin appears reddish where the blood vessels are closest to the surface of the skin and slightly yellowish elsewhere.
Ah, well, i was just reiterating what my book told me, i haven't done any real testing yet.

People can't [hack] hardware they can't access.
Well, that's too specific. People can't do *anything* to hardware they can't access, hence the parent's redundancy.

You can do drugs and abuse women all you want, so long as you don't pirate music.
