What say you walk around that cloak of secrecy and provide some first hand accounts of Joseph Smith's fraud? First hand? Wait, what? You mean travel back in time, allow myself to be conned by him, and then come back here and give you a report? Provide means cite in this context. Cite some recorded first-hand accounts. Idiot.
The observer effect: the more energy we consume studying the effect of energy consumption on climate change, the more we'll have to incorporate this factor into our models. Conversely, if we ignore the problem, eventually it will go away.
With a tankless system, you need to provide power on demand or the customer gets a cold shower. All those folks showering at 6:30 am need their water heated at the same time.
With a tank system you can spread the heating over the night (eg. turning on each tank for an hour means that you can service perhaps 6 times as many customers with the same peak load).
Most retail suppliers get charged some multiplier of their peak load so are very keen to keep peak loads down.
Except that tankless heaters use natural gas, not electricity. Unless you count the igniter.
You should not use apt-get dist-upgrade. Read the instructions for christ's sakes, esp. if you are running a server. From reading the apt-get man page I thought that dist-upgrade was used for upgrading to a new release. I see now that this is incorrect, thank you for clearing that up.

you post on Slashdot and run a server, so I assume you are interested in computers and capable of reading docs It's a hell of an extrapolation to assume that because I read slashdot and am interested in computers, that I would have the slightest idea where to look for the release notes, no matter how obvious that may seem to you.
This is the, I dunno, 5th Ubuntu release I witness, and time after time people don't do the logical thing. I have spent countless hours on the mailing list to help them out, when all they would have needed to do is:
http://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+8.04+release or, god beware, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/ and follow the release announcement.
I was a newbie too, but I tried to do my homework before asking other people for help. It's called courtesy. I spend time helping folks on mailing lists too, but rather than berating them for not reading the docs, I just give them the URL they need. Sometimes folks just have a hard time finding what they're looking for and there's no need to bite their heads off.

Just download the Alternate CD, burn, pop it in. This is a server installation, so it doesn't do anything when I "pop it in" other than mounting.
Whatever happened to reading the release notes? I'm brand new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, so finding the release notes is a bit like finding the highway plans in the city building's 4th floor basement in a disused lavatory behind a locked door with a sign stating "beware of leopard."
Eventually I found the release notes on ubuntu.com but it wasn't obvious where to find it, and it took some time just to navigate there due to the site being unreliable while it's getting the crap beaten out of it.
I swear this is the last time during this upgrade cycle that I write anything to help people Given your bedside manner, I'd like that in writing.
..who haven't done their homework. I've been struggling to teach myself this shit for a long time, and despite trying very hard to learn on my own and use the available resources, I still get lost sometimes. So I ask questions from those who are likely to know. There's no need to be condescending.
Did I just hear the loud "wooosh" of a joke flying over someone's head? More like the whoosh of a baseball bat as I back your joke into the corner and beat it senseless.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but apt-get dist-upgrade on my server says there's nothing to upgrade. Maybe that's normal for a server without X installed.

If I download the torrent and burn it to disc, can apt-get do a dist-upgrade from the DVD?
Most cellphones coming out now (with the notable exception of smartphones (except for Blackberry)) are Java enabled. If you've purchased a game on your cellphone is it likely written in Java.
Motorola was among the first to adopt Java in all their new phones: http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/columns/oct2000/mobd ev13.html
As for hardware execution of bytecode, what's happening now is not the original approach that Sun attempted (i.e. integrating a bytecode interpreter right into the CPU). What is happening now is that several vendors are selling "accelerator" chips that sit between the CPU and the SRAM and execute the bytecodes for the CPU. This modular design has made it easier to integrate these accelerators into existing designs. The Nazomi JA108 is one of the more successful models from what I can gather.
You still have to run a virtual machine, however with the accelerator chip actually executing the bytecodes you get vastly improved performance and reduced battery drain.
Reminds me of "The Woman Song" I heard on the Bob and Tom show:
I am Woman, hear me roar! (if you don't open my door..)
I can do anything that a man can do! (but I don't have to..) They also did an equivalent song for the guys, "He's the Man:"
And I can have sex any time (that you want..)
Cause I'm a man with needs! (but they're not that important..)

Finally, a solution that scales!
Seems like science might be a better fit..
An Australian pepper, maybe, but not a European pepper, that's my point.

I hope my computer screen gets the naughty cop.

Some of these accelerators are even finding their way into other technologies as well, not just cell phones: http://www.elecdesign.com/Articles/Index.cfm?AD=1
I could polish up this list a little but Google is your friend too
