I thought the article was focusing more on takeing closed source products open.

I think it could be a matter of IBM and HP and other people have figured out there is more money in selling hardware and support and less money in software. It also seems that you could pay for software development with the advertising budget, if people are using your free software you would look more appealing when they need support or more hardware by the simple fact that if you made it you could support it best.

Maybe since this is slashdot people mught understand my point better if I use a car analogy. Suppose I go to a group of automotive engineers and say I want a car that can cruise at mach 1 and I get 5 back. Of the 5 I get back 4 of them have parts that break upon reaching the speed of sound and the fifth has a red exterior and green seats. I would reject the first 4 because they don't do what I wanted them to do. car number 5 can be sent to a paint shop and get the seats reupholstered (future cars could probably be ordered with the proper color scheme).

the reason you might have to try many oss projects before you find a good one is that places like sourceforge and other big oss places never seem to drop any abandoned projects so they sit around popping up in search results. My theory is that all software starts off bad and gets better over time. Bad closed source is harder to find because they don't release until they think they can sell it or they go out of buisness and nobody is allowed to spread it.

I prefer linux to windows but every year or so I install windows to get my gaming fix or to test microsoft betas. Before I tried XP I had Vista running but found the games that we were going to play had video issues. I did manage to put Windows 2000 on it with no problems in time for the lan party.

You state that you could not get X to work at any resolution which to me implies that you could get to the command line and at least try to solve your problem while booted directly into the operating system. My windows problem is IMO a little worse, most of the time the install goes directly to a black screen and hangs after it does the hardware auto-detection, the few times I have managed to get the installer to a usable state when it reboots at the end it goes directly to a black screen and stays there.

Instruct each intern to remove the outer envolpe and send it out again. Give each intern a stack of envelopes in the event they need to return a cd instead of the usual task of preparing the cd for the next leg of its journey. If you have enough interns they can be instructed to throw away any cd that has no forwarding envelopes left.
