I'm involved with the programming team here at Notre Dame. We actually went to the regionals, which for our region were held at Waterloo. The guys at Waterloo rocked.

    Anyway, some advice:

    • read over all the problems at the beginning and find the easy ones fast. It's important to get those done first, because that'll help your score a good deal.
    • practice as a team. Ideally you'll want to download a sample problem set from somewhere, limit yourselves to a few hours, sit down at one computer, and get used to the whole scenario. The biggest problem our team had was a keyboard bottleneck. I had written up on paper code to solve one of the problems, but didn't get enough keyboard time to debug at the end. When all was over and I was back home, I downloaded the code I'd been working on, and it took me about 10 minutes and 5 lines of code to get what I was working on functional. Those 10 minutes would have made the difference between us getting 3 problems right and being in sixth, and getting 4 problems right and possibly getting third place and going to world. This was the first major programming contest for the three of us on our team, so we hadn't practiced using one machine amongst three of us, and it takes some getting used to.
    • If you're allowed to bring in printed materials, I'd recommend not bringing too much, you will probably want to limit yourselves to a good algorithms book, a calculus book, maybe a geometry book, and maybe printouts of man pages for useful C functions.
    • Be comfortable with manipulating numbers in different bases, sometimes problems throw a problem at you where input isn't in base 10. If you know how to handle this, it won't be a problem, but if you don't, you'll waste time...
    • realize that the data sets they test your program with will probably be much larger than the sample data sets, so even if your program seems to run fast, it may not. It doesn't hurt to know basic complexity analysis. I saw a recursive program once that ran quite quick on a sample data set, but after some simple complexity analysis I realized it would run for 10^30 years on a larger data set.
    • Don't underestimate the powers of the modulus operator (% in C).
That's all I can think of right now. A really good source for sample problems is on Waterloo's webpage: http://plg.uwaterloo.ca/~acm00/. Also feel free to look at the page I maintain for the ND programming team: http://prijks.esgeroth.org/puters/acm/
    I'll stop now, I think.

do you judge them by their general actions, or only by their actions at a time when you've insulted their fundamental beliefs?

Isn't that how you'd judge the Communists? I know I would.

Well, it really depends on the situation. The "communist" regime in russia is something I judge to have been evil, based on their actions, yes. However, due to my catholic upbringing (which I try to not let get in the way of my thinking) I have a tendency to try to do as little judging as possible. Unfortunately I fail at that. So although my personal political philosophy is libertarian, I don't judge somebody who holds a different philosophy as being wrong or something. As Op Ivy once said, "All I Know is That I Don't Know Nothing," and despite the double negative, those are pretty wise words. I am quite possibly or likely wrong, and have no problem admitting I don't know all the answers. However, by misrepresenting the libertarian philosophy, you misrepresent what I believe in, and what you said was basically "Pete would have no problem violating the GPL, cuz Pete's a libertarian," and that is where the problem lies, because that is not something I believe, and even though I will admit I may be wrong about what I believe, I definitely do not want people saying things that are not true about what I believe in...

It happens I go a step further and hold you guys to the same standard. You do come out better than Stalin did, of course :)

Well, I'm certainly happy to hear that. =) And please realize I do have a sense of humor (a rather sarcastic one at that), and I'm only take this semi-seriously, but please realize there are times when you can't expect everyone to just laugh along after you've insulted them...

(Yet.)" without any kind of argument to back up your claim. Both my intuition and my limited knowledge of economics are telling me that your claim seems utterly wrong. Could you please state some kind of argument if you're going to make claims of this sort?

The cost of internet service has gone down. Why is this? Well, probably because of increased demand and a decreased cost for hardware, among a variety of reasons. This seems like economics at work to me. Would internet costs be lower if spam didn't exist? Maybe. The total cost of spam averaged across every ISP account is probably negligible, but I still think it is there. And even if economics does not yet apply to the net, that does not say anything about whether or not economics apply to internet service, which is just another part of our economy, regardless of what the net itself is.

Please, pretty please, clarify/back up your claims if you're going to make them.

But speaking of banks, I suggest everyone begin by reading Murry Rothbards "The Mystery of Banking" and then we all work out a way to ban the federal reserve. The amount of money the government and the banks make off of what they do is insane. And then we have all these great laws in place to protect the consumer. All they do is allow the banks to get away with what they do. And the burden of all this is placed on those of lesser financial resources.
