Seems like this amount isn't very high. We really need to crack down on spammers and make them pay (literally, although the figurative meaning works well there too). IANAL, so I'd appreciate it if someone who is could give us a quick rundown of why spammers are so hard to prosecute. Or whatever the problem is.
As a quick aside, would someone please tag this "typo"? That "ut" and the beginning took about.3 seconds to process as "But;".3 seconds I'll never get back. kthx.;-)
Microsoft shouldn't waste time patching/supporting these older browser versions.
While your argument does have some merit, the whole "focus on the new stuff" idea isn't very helpful to a company's image. (Note to ACs: Perfect place to reply with "Can MS's image get any worse? LOLROFLMCBOFL!") For example, say you're playing an old-school game on the PC. Oh noes! It doesn't work. Why not? Well, the company's website says that only the FAQ pages for that game are still up, because they stopped giving specific support for it long ago. You're screwed! =(
Interestingly enough, the writers of TFA missed the entire idea behind flies' eyes. They talk about motion detection and whatnot, when the real issue is, flies see so well because
It's the kind of thing you'd expect of highschool students.
You're right. You would expect it from high school students. I would know, as I am one myself.
However, I also attend a class at the local community college, and if the students there are any indication, you would expect it from community college students, as well.
Indeed, from what I gather from the conversations of my older siblings' friends, you would expect it from Ivy League university students, too.
The military functions I've gone to tend to prove that you would expect it from thirty-something soldiers.
I don't even need to explain how you would expect it from talk show hosts.
And popular comedians.
And profesional athletes.
And actors. Actresses.
And, of course, you would expect it from slashdot users in general.
In the end, I'm perfectly ok with the generalization. High school students are immature. Granted. But let's not ignore the huge majority of the rest of the world, who, if technically 'mature' enough to escape being called 'immature,' must just be total faggots altogether.
And the ironic thing is...I just used the word 'faggot' derisively. Touche.
I'm reserving judgement on Vista until it's out of the gates. All of this pre-release speculation is normal, even expected. I remember when a newer version of our Toyota was scheduled to come out, everyone insisted that we shouldn't upgrade. The day after it became available, our old van exploded in a massive ball of fire and steel and discarded french fries.
For anyone who hasn't RTFA yet, go do it now. The summary is a mess of paranoia, and, while there might be something to actually worry about with Jigsaw, TFA does a great job of showing how it works and what exactly could and could not happen. The creator likens Jigsaw to Wikipedia--and it's a pretty good comparison, in that both rely solely on users to edit and maintain information. No, Wikipedia doesn't aid in identity theft--separate issue entirely. Depending on how stupid your average Jigsaw user is, it could be a great tool or a dangerous advantage.
Given how stupid your average human is, though, there isn't much hope for the former.
Clarification: Yes, the mice in TFA all got cancer and died because of the whole risk-increase thing, but "What if they HADN'T gotten cancer?" was my line of thought. Failed to mention that critical detail. =D
If the organs in the older mice were just as healthy as those in younger mice, how did they not live longer? It would seem to me that if your organs are perfectly healthy, you'll live. Wonder what the catch is.
Or, to pull a Sherlock Holmes, reject the impossible and whatever is left - however improbable - must be correct.
Actually, that's technically pulling an Occam, as it's a variation on Occam's Razor. Yeah, yeah, Holmes said it like that, but Occam's razor is generally thought to be the foundation for Holmes' theory. Er...Doyle's theory, as it were.
This is an okay idea, but it unfortunately could backfire. While store security is definitely very important, new technology always stirs up some discontents--truth be told, there is a fine line between security and invasion of privacy. I'm all for the new systems, but they will also bring up tech security issues, etc.
...that people don't like the government fucking around with Internet access?
TFA can't even find a good reason for the copyright...in fact, it spends half the time telling us why it's a shitty idea. I knew American laws were stupid, but, damn, we overflowed into Canada. Leave them to their ice hockey, dammit!
Oddly enough, I was reading Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle just before I checked out/. today...and this article echoes with something of Vonnegut's idea of ice-nine. (For those of you unfamiliar with the book, ice-nine is a (fictional) form of water with a melting point well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and, when dropped in water, it "teaches" the water how to crystallize in the same way. Crappy description, I know, but ice-nine eventually is dropped into an open body of water, "teaches" all the water in the world how to freeze that way, and essentially brings about the end of the world.)
Anyway, it'd be interesting to see what we can do with this new form of technology...ice-nine is, of course, only meant as a bit of satire, but it suggests some interesting ideas about the structure of our universe.
He draws the obvious conclusion that, even though most of/. has read Neuromancer, it doesn't push us into love/hate relationships with the neighborhood hottie street samurai who has built-in HUD/sunglasses.
If you RTFA, it turns out that Perelman wants a couple friends, and they don't have to be mathematicians, either.
I guess solving one of the most puzzling mathematical conjectures in history kinda makes everything else seem dim by comparison...now he just wants someone to have a beer with.
Maybe he refused it 'cuz he didn't want to look like an untouchable.
I think one of the problems with the whole issue is whether the judge gave such a light sentencing due to the kid's age or because he didn't know how to handle the crime itself. IANAL, nor do I know anything about punishing adult spam offenders, but I'd be interested to hear from someone who does--what is the usual punishment for your average mid-twenties spammer?
And if Lennon only got "grounded" (how else do you describe that joke of a sentence?) because he's 16 and must not have known what he was doing, the poor soul, he's still got two years until he's adult enough to see the consequences of his actions and we should be nice to him after all didn't we all make mistakes when we were young we shouldn't throw his entire life away for one little problem that doesn't seem right what would his mother think let he who is without sin cast the first stone...
...then my argument is that the dumb m----------r should be treated like he's an adult. I think we're all sick of teenagers getting away with murder (figuratively as well as literally, now and then) because they're still babies. If I was born on March 2nd, 1980, and I killed someone on March 1st, 1998, at 11 PM, would that be any different than if I killed them two hours later (after turning 18, if you didn't do the math)?
Nope.
Now give this kid justice...not an oppurtunity to play CS for two months straight on judge's orders.
Ok, that I respect. Awesome to see you balls-to-the-wall and defending your own decisions, seriously; I think I'm even going to provide a little translation of our own little encounter:
"Man, Cowan, what were you thinking?"
"This is exactly what I was thinking, actually. So there."
"Oh, sweet!"
Even though I might not agree with you entirely,/props for the response. (^_^)
From TFA, quote from an official of OSI followed by a quote from the guy who submitted MS's stuff:
"I think that the general principle should be that authors have preference over third parties when it comes to submitting licenses," he said.
"Microsoft has said neither that it will nor that it won't submit its two licenses.
"They've said that they're not submitting them at this time. Perhaps they have revisions to make? If so, then approving draft licenses would be a serious wrongo. If you insist, we can take it to the next board meeting, but I'm reasonably confident that the board's decision will be to defer approval," Nelson said in the e-mail string.
Cowan then responded that "I defer to your vast expertise."
Translated as:
"Hey, look Cowan, we need to actually work this out legally."
North Korea adopts its own open source policy, allowing modification and perusal of its extensive nuclear weapons systems. "Communists share everything," say top officials in the country.
(This had to be done.) (^_^)b

Needless to say, we bought the new van.
Anyway.
Thought that might be relevant.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

I'm constantly amazed at how far "activists" will go to further their agenda...it becomes a big game to them. Ridiculous.
So that's why I can't use my neighbor's internet when it's raining...
Mainly because she's such a bitch, but still.

Honestly, what was the guy thinking?
