So if the management engine isn't actually necessary what actually does it provide?
Oh, honey. It's a backdoor by the NSA. They can remotely access your computer, no matter what is installed on it, and even if it's turned off. No, I'm not kidding and it's not a conspiracy theory.
Why do you think mining with JS can't be very efficient? These miners use Monero, not Bitcoin, which is specifically designed to be only viable on CPUs and not on GPUs/ASICs. And Javascript these days is JIT-compiled to reasonable levels of efficiency. I don't see a fundamental reason why this should be dramatically slower than native mining.
Why is this strange? I mean, the whole point about being in orbit around Earth is that, unless you spend energy to get out of it, it keeps circling forever. Or am I overlooking something here?
Absolutely nothing. You get a result which is equivalent to (1) using NoScript, plus (2) running your own miner. But with a lot less performance because it's in Javascript.
OTOH, this guy seems to be an expert in the field. If he claims to have proved it, then it's either correct or it has a very subtle flaw. One must be rather sure of yourself to go public with a claim like this one. So it's not like the false proofs that cranks keep publishing; this has the potential to be a serious thing. As a scientist working in a different field, I am very curious to hear about this.
You can interact with people also on a phone/tablet/computer, you know. Maybe your definition of "social interaction that would be suitable for their age" is biased.
There used to be one, but it was removed. The main issue is that in Unity there is no space for buttons on the right in a maximized window, because that space is taken by the taskbar and clock. If you try to move the buttons on the right, you end up with an inconsistent or uncomfortable mess.
I'm sure they don't want to be associated with spyware
You mean the Amazon that is marketing a device with a permanently-on microphone that listens to what you are saying and sends it to their servers? Yeah, I am sure they don't want to be associated with spyware.
Charm Charm Up, actually. The "cc" in the name stands for two charms. IANAPP, but I think we are still very, very far from building particles with enough energy to have two tops -- we observed the first one just a few years ago.
Not that sure --- R is such a clusterfuck that someone managed to write a succesful 150-page book about the different ways in which you can shoot yourself in the foot with it.
Oh, I refer to the old interface (which I am still using). That had no visual markers apart from the indentation. So basically they added visual markers in addition to the indentation, and everyone complained.

Someone who didn't get the joke modded it insightful instead of funny...

Let's ask the important questions instead: can I buy a wedding ring that automatically locks my smartphone when my wife tries to use it?
Not enough expletives to be a Linusrant (TM).
You all should install the Google search link fix Firefox add-on.

Funny that you ask for a citation, when you didn't bother to give one yourself in your original post.
If only kW/h was an unit of energy...

Should have been "all popular platforms, and then Linux, too".

It's called "Intel management engine".

Well I wouldn't call Emacs a "basic text editor", would I?
But would you still carry it if you weren't a crackhead?

Rollercoasters do this already.
If he had a gun too, he could have shot her first in self-defense!
Also, I guess that there are not many 70-80 year old people using it.
You're simply getting old.
