Yea, I would much rather become IBMs bitch than MS bitch... or not. Just ignore IBMs absurd pricing, neglect of Lotus Notes (where is the Linux client???), massive lay-offs replacing workers with H1-Bs and offshoring, etc... Yea, bunch of fucking saints over at IBM, until you have to do business with them.

I don't understand there part where you aren't capable of going and downloading the Office Compatability pack that is available for Office XP and 2003 that solves this issue. I'm not really in love with Vista or Office 2007 but I love how /.ers always find links to support their anti-MS rhetoric but can never find links to solve their supposed issues.

There are very few new features that can't be exported to older versions of Excel/PPT/Word with the compatability pack, so my original point stands, where is the issue?

I wouldn't call BT a rich client app (very cool and I use it often), and honestly, there is a lot of love for alternative clients so that says something. And of course that is what "developers, developers, developers" was all about, but Apple hasn't really done much to change that, when it comes to the OS and dev tools they are mostly preaching to the choir.

I can't go anywhere or read any publication without seeing an ad for the iPod/iPhone stuff, but I don't even see the occaissional text ad/ad words/banner for Apple dev tools? They have a nice dev center web site and a great membership network, but they don't trumpet that from the rooftops?

Maybe a silhouette feverishly typing at a keyboard and pounding Red Bull doesn't make for a compelling ad?

There has been nothig really exciting from Apple Computer since the new Pro towers, but the new iPods from Apple Gadget Co. are very nice. The latest bumps to iWork are half-hearted, iLife bumps are now money grabs and they are still trying to leverage .Mac when you can get most of what it offers for free. I think it's pretty clear that Apple will sacrifice the OS to sell more gadgets. That said, the Windows iTunes client is getting fairly bloated, has some long standing issues and needs to be updated on a relentless schedule. And the lack of a Linux client and recent somewhat hostile moves toward Linux users with the new iPods isn't helping either. If you want to provide gadgets to a wide range of consumers you have to respect and support them equally.

I have been no fan of Vista and had stopped using it at all back in February, but I recently slapped it on a spare PC to see if it had improved (and no shock) it has in many ways. The WSJ is right, the big MS machine is coming up to speed and the transition pains are disappearing... at this point any competitor has missed the boat.

Just shut the fuck up and play some games without dragging real-world baggage along with you. It's easy enough to come up with a name that references a classic game, a song lyric, a book, etc... I always find those types of names far more clever than veiled political messages, product/brand loyalty or celebrity references.

Yes, it's true that MS wouldn't have to money to fund the Xbox division without their ill-gotten gain from their OS monopoly. Yes, I know it's terrible I'm supporting them in any way/shape/form. If you are any bit of a gamer you have to play with MS in some way, either with a 360 or dual-booting, and overall the 360 seems to me to be the lesser of the two evils. While I love reading stories like this, and no doubt it is partially due to the massive improvements in desktop Linux over the last couple years, a great deal of the inertia behind this is likely PC makers frustrated with Vista and consumer indifference. Dell showed just enough success with Ubuntu on consumer machines that now all the larger PC makers have to dip their toes in the pool.

In theory we should now started seeing more and better drivers and more Linux versions of popular applications. If the right approach is taken I think some companies will provide code/docs/etc.. Any way you slice it, it's good news.

That is quite a load of mis-information you are hauling there. Intel is far more open with their hardware specs, are providing lots of open source driver support and porting many of their development apps to Linux (and either giving away or open sourcing many of them as well). You can actually go to Intel's site and find a list of which boards they actively support Linux on and find drivers for older RedHat 4 and SLES builds. Additionally, BIOS updates are now provided via ISO image so Linux users (or any platform really, but we are the targeted group) can update their BIOS without jumping through hoops. I won't even get into your whole "technology is available to a few limited US h/w mfrs" as it makes no sense when you consider that outside of BFG (maker of nVidia based video cards and a smathering of motherboards) there are no U.S.hardware makers any longer (and all BFG does is assemble over here, the parts are still off-shored).

By way of comparison, AMD/ATi have yet to provide any really decent drivers, little in the way of documentation and have offered virtually zero F/OSS developer support. Via has been slightly better but hardly a font of knowledge. For desktop computing (and including Via was a stretch) Intel is probably the most supportive and easiest to deal with hardware make for a Linux workstation.
