I'm a native English speaker, learnt some French and a few words of other European languages - then picked up conversational Italian in my late 40s.
I've found that yes, there is "English" and "Other" for me. I sometimes lapse into Italian when trying to speak some French.
And I'm not bragging here - learning a language was difficult for me. It's hard work. You just do it. No quick trip, no easy way (well, not really). Just stick at it.
Uncle Henry and Cousin Emma are washing the pears. Prepare the spaghetti sauce. Market day is Wednesday. My dog has fleas. The alligator's thumb cannot be in the jam. The dog barks at midnight.
I find it amusing that so many people on Slashdot refer to others as "dumb" or "idiots" without bothering to get even a modicum of information regarding the specific story being discussed.
Yep - those people are just dumb idiots, eh? Not that I know much about them, of course.
Space is cold. So very cold. There's no problem dumping heat, rather there's the problem of dumping heat and not destroying your heatsinks and bleeders because of the extreme hot/cold ratios.
Nope, common fallacy. Space isn't cold or hot. It's a vacuum - the only temperatures in space are of things that have enough atoms to actually have a temperature. A major problem with the Apollos was how to radiate away excess heat. (Is there an Astrophysicist in the house who can explain this much better than I can?)
Tut tut. Nonsense. Intelligence isn't linked to brain size. If it was we'd all be roughly equally smart. Not the case. I think there's been weights and measures done of dead peoples' brains (rather than live peoples' ones...) and the size varied up and down, not consistently with the IQ or whatever measure you choose.
Similar to another part of (male) anatomy, it's not size of your hook, it's what you do with it.
Now we'll get private companies saying "hey, if we get into space there is some serious money to be made". That's how we'll finally get there, for keeps. And I'm serious. The future of space is in the hands of corporations, not governments. And that's how it should be.
Pity I won't be around to see it, but can't have everything.
If I want to watch TV, I'll do it at home. If I want to play SC ][, ditto. If I fancy a quite beer, maybe some fries and a yatter with the locals I'll go to the bar. Darts and/or cribbage optional (not even I am that old...)
Devout Christians are like Mother Theresa: compassionate, humble, sacrificing.
Not so - Check out Chris Hitchens "The Missionary Position". Sample (Wikipedia...)
Hitchens portrays Mother Teresa's organization, the Missionaries of Charity, as a cult which has promoted suffering to further its own financial ends and does not help those in need. He argues that Teresa's own words on poverty proved that her intention was not to help people, citing a 1981 press conference in which she was asked: "Do you teach the poor to endure their lot?" She replied: "I think it is very beautiful for the poor to accept their lot, to share it with the passion of Christ. I think the world is being much helped by the suffering of the poor people."
MT didn't want to help the poor to stop being poor. She wanted to help the poor to be happy being poor.
Tongue firmly in cheek here. I've been working on these babies since '79 and they just get renamed. Enterprise server is the latest. Unless there's a new one since lunch. To me it's a mainframe if it runs the same operating system that I know and love. And supports about 500 people, 7/24 365 days a year. With an uptime of 99.999% or so. When Windows/[whatever] does that, put me out to stud.
and btw i think that the teacher should not be able to be sued (or fired) unless it can be shown that he? had a practice of failing students for believing Creationism
I read that the spontaneous creation of the Universe from nothingness was extremely unlikely. However, it only had to happen once.
Damn right! Let's actually represent ourselves, rather than pick someone to do it on our behalf for three/four/five years (and that person has no requirement to do what he'd said he'd do).
We are talking total democracy here, right? Issue by issue stuff? Do we need that extra destroyer/school/hospital/road?
The two convicted were not stating an opinion - they were saying "let's get together to have a riot" and at least one gave a particular location (behind McDonalds) where the rioters should assemble. Of course they claim it was all a joke.
Maybe it was a joke? Refer to the Guildford 4 (filmed as "In the Name of the Father"). The people charged with the crime started naming all sorts of people as also involved in the bombing just to demonstrate how ridiculous the charges were. People like 'My Auntie Vi' or some such. Rather than really investigate whether Auntie Vi was really involved, rather than at Bingo, the British police just banged everyone up for a decade or so.
The Sistine Chapel is free for anyone to view. They're not charging admission, nor are cathedrals. All it will cost you is your time; the line can be very long.
Not true. I lived in Rome for a spell and the Sistine was one of the places we took visitors. You pay an admission to get into the Vatican museum. It's not that much (can't remember, but we didn't feel baulked for the amount of stuff they have in there) but it's there.
Well worth a visit by the way. And if anyone's interested, I paid more for admission to the "Buried Village" in Rotorua NZ (look it up) than I did for admission to Pompeii (Italy). Skip the Buried village. Don't skip Pompeii. I'm tempted to say "Down with Buried Village, Up Pompeii" but it would date me.
2: Deny all access to new product for rank-and-file
3: When attention starts to wane, "accidentally" leave product somewhere it can be found and analyzed
4: Watch media hype increase
5: Release new product
6: Profit!!

Naked/nude photos are mentioned twice in the summary but there aren't any in the linked articles. How did this story make it to the front page?

The space station has cost a huge pile of money and has provided little more than a presence in space.
Isn't that enough?
Pity I won't be around to see it, but can't have everything.
Wrong chain .... unless you met Slashdot on OKC.

Put your feet up, go fishing, read some books. Lord knows you've earned it. And nope, I'm not an Apple man - but I recognize hard work when I see it.
Top that for a "get off my lawn" potential. "Tomorrow People" must date back to the mid '70s.
I've seen someone doing that. Two hands on the device (the electronic one.. ok, I'll clarify that again - I mean the phone)
Rather than some Old Testament verse? http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/us_trijicon_rifle_scopes_in_iraq_and_afghanistan_f.php

I am an agnostic and from my viewpoint atheism is a religion.
Can't remember who said it, but a good quote is "atheism is a religion the same way not collecting stamps is a hobby".
What about Samuel Boswell?

You have to bury the-head-that-never-dies under a rock. And yes, this also works for spammers.
$12.5 billion to buy Motorola Mobility... for the patents. $4.5 billion to buy Nortel... for the patents. $450 million to buy Novell's patents.
What a ****ing waste of money.
Yes, that's patently obvious.
(Thank-you, I'm here 'til Thursday)
