Totally. You should go tell all the children that would benefit from these vaccinations that you don't support this cause because Microsoft was totally lame for requiring Internet Explorer be installed to properly run Windows.
Fucking OSS people. Seriously, go choke on your beard.
You mean the highest end PS3 retailed for $599. And it was endlessly ridiculed for being so expensive. The highest end 360 retailed for $399 at launch. $700 will hardly get you anything even close to being considered a higher end gaming rig.
Yes, for those game developers targeting people willing to spend $1000+ (and that's a conservative number) on a gaming rig, as opposed to $300 on a console. There is a huuuuge market for that.
The real thing that threatens PC gaming is PC gamers themselves. When PC gamers don't get exactly what they want, they "stick it to 'em" by openly admitting they'll pirate the game. Case in point: Modern Warfare 2 and dedicated servers. There is an amazing sense of entitlement for a platform that continues to be less relevant every day, and far and away the biggest pain in the ass.
Something tells me that's the exact opposite of what they're going for. You're delusional in thinking that Linux users have that much weight to throw around in the netbook market. This is the type of thing Jane doe will buy and enjoy it because it runs facebook just fine on cheap, energy efficient, small form factor hardware.
Would have been nice to see how the browser on the Zune HD compares. It it presumed to be what is to come on WinMo 7, and is a marked improvement over what is available on current WinMo phones.
Ok - So it really is just a lack of understanding on your part. Hardware revisions are not intended to solve software issues. They are intended to solve failing hardware. Yes, much of it is in fact heat related, and much of what the revisions consist of is smaller more efficient, thus cooler chips. And lastly, games do get a chance for patches, if you have an internet connection, but that is a separate topic altogether.
I can't say I've ever heard the argument "You should go console because the hardware never, ever fails." Did you just pull that out of your ass? Or are you just not that familiar with the nomenclature here? A new chipset doesn't imply any additional or less functionality (I suppose it might with the PS3), it just means it is less prone to failure. The target platform remains entirely the same.
Apparently nobody else sees the irony in a bunch of people writing cynical and negative comments regarding MS releasing free, ad-supported software on a free, ad-supported website.
Typical snarky slashdot response. Did you catch the part where I said it's 2009? The web now is not the web as originally designed. Maybe you're still living in the animated gif world, but everyone else is living in a world where browsers are JIT compiling javascript and websites are no longer just websites but actual applications.
It's 2009. We should be able to use the internet the way it is intended, with javascript. Javascript isn't the problem, poor programming on reddit's behalf is the problem.
The average person uses the computer like a tv - turn it on to see the web and turn it off when done.
First step to writing a clandestine flame post: Imply "facts." People will just assume they're true, when in reality, they are not.
Oh yeah these people do exist and they have 'FRIENDS' that 'KNOW' computers and 'HELP' them out by turning off that annoying UAC or giving them a 'FREE' version of office. The looks on their faces when I explain that the software they got off Limewire is infected with virus' - they can't believe microsoft would do that!!! THAT is the mentality, and that is why these attacks have always worked, and will always work.
Step two involves strategically placing words in all caps and building straw men to attack.
It amazes me these days for what passes as informative on slashdot.
I bought a first gen MacBook Pro. During manufacturing there was so much thermal paste put on the processor, graphics chip and northbridge that it caked out onto the motherboard and was actually insulating from the copper heatsink. It was a well known manufacturing issue that Apple never acknowledged even though every 1st gen up to a certain point was affected by it. I have pictures of mine, personally, that I took apart, voiding the warranty, to fix.
A DVD drive and 4-year-old CPU are already starting to hold it back (several new games are coming out for it that will have to span across several DVD's, versus one bluray for the PS3).
DVD is still a perfectly capable medium for video games. If you think the increased cost of a blu-ray drive is justified by the handful of games that happen to be bigger than a single DVD, you're smoking crack.
and 4-year-old CPU... If they wait too long, Sony is going to start trouncing them with the stronger hardware of the PS3.
How do you figure? Microsoft's 4-year old processor has kept up with Sony's, wait for it.... 4 year old processor. The Cell, by the way, hasn't lived up to the hype, unless of course you like running folding@home. Otherwise, the PS3 architecture is not a good fit for game development. The reason the 360 is trouncing the PS3 is not only because of cost, but because it is far easier to develop for.
The PS3 has several in the pipeline, and you don't have any.
If by that you mean the XBox has Final Fantasy 11 and Phantasy Star Universe, and the PS3 has none, then sure, I agree with this statement wholeheartedly.
There are only so many FPS's and racing games I can put up with before I want some innovation.
There is a lot that could be implied by saying "Fix the internet," but all that's really needed is a full duplex asynchronous protocol that's light weight and secure. We're at a point now where browsers are adhering better to standards and compiling javascript on the fly to machine code, yet we're still piggy-backing on http.
Aside from that, the summary doesn't make a lot of sense. What does IPv4 have to do with the internet being broken? We're just running out of IP addresses but even now it's not an impending issue as IPv6 is becoming more widely supported. And where is the infrastructure lacking on the side of ISP's? Saying "the internet is broken" is such an open-ended statement I still wonder what the submitter is trying to get at.
I have a hard time believing they would ship Chrome OS with all the cruft required to install any general purpose *desktop* linux app. And that only begins with X, not to mention all the crap piled on top of it.
Totally. You should go tell all the children that would benefit from these vaccinations that you don't support this cause because Microsoft was totally lame for requiring Internet Explorer be installed to properly run Windows.

So what. Richard Stallman is donating all leftover toe fungus to starving children in Africa. Suck it Microsoft!
Competition spurs innovation! Prepare for the next generation of spam, now procedurally generated!
The new consoles started about $599

If the one thing they got going for them is the 95% "not enthusiast" market, I'd say that's pretty good.
enthusiastic linux base

Written in hipster technologies. If I were a betting man, I'd wager this will never see the light of day.

Not to mention, Java lacks support for unsigned types, which makes it less than ideal for certain domains.

I for one am filled with feigned outrage, because the way slashdot presents this article dictate I be!

All it takes is marketing to sell the same game repackaged with a new player on the cover every year.

Yup. This is Microsoft's fault.
Honestly... who modded this insightful??
It's a vicious cycle, because next time you see someone spell MS with a "$" you'll go right back to Linux.

Chrome OS will mark the first "real" year of the Linux desktop. Goodbye X.Org, and good riddance.
