  1. yes on Is Open Source Software a Race To Zero? · · Score: 1

In long term (hundreds of years) we will have excelent quality open source software available for almost everything, so there will be little point in reimplementing something as a commercial software. Good software does not get obsolete, if it is maintained, it can function perfectly for ever. Take TeX for example, or vi (or emacs ;), or Unix...

Undoubtedly there will always areas where commercial software will work better (e.g. areas where specification changes often and rapidly, or areas where clear accountability for the software is important), but those are exceptions.

Yeah, in fact anyone could have copied it, and possibly also did. That is why the admins should be definitely held responsible, since it is their fault that the data was accessible. You could maybe also punish people who downloaded the data and did not tell anyone about the security problem (if you can find them). But to punish only the single person in the whole cause who did the right thing is really stupid. You are just teaching people that next time when they find about a security problem, they should better keep it to themselves.

In fact, I think you are right. I can probably find a separate reason to boycott each day of the Games even now. Doping, commercialization, the new swimsuit controversy, human rights, Tibet, Avery Brundage reaction to Munich attacks, bribes deciding who will host the games, Moscow and L.A. "half-games"... and of course also the Berlin propaganda games (remember, you broke the law first ;)

Now I don't know whether to boycott the Olympic Games because of China ignoring human rights or because it was converted to a festival of commerce. If it goes on like this, I may be soon able to boycott each day of Olympics for a different reason.

In that case the problem lies in installing the recovery console. If someone gives you admin access to his computer in this way, you already have all the rights you need. Renaming some files afterwards is not an exploit, it is just something you do once you have already gained access to the system.

  10. Nonsense, this is not an exploit on Gaining System-Level Access To Vista · · Score: 1

If you can rename cmd.exe to Utilman.exe, you must be already an Administrator. An Administrator owns the computer, by definition. There is no "higher level" of access, there are even documented ways how Administrator can gain access to System account.

Why don't you do the "right thing" with North Korea as well? The Cuban embargo is plainly stupid, I just don't understand how anyone could not see it. You are effectively helping Castro to isolate the people in Cuba from the free world. The only thing they know about the free world is what Castro tells them. If they could meet real live US-ans on their family vacation in Cuba, they would at least be able to compare. If US businesses started operating in Cuba, Castro would have to be the bad guy who bans them, since otherwise his planned economy would quickly become irrelevant. As it is now, Castro can easily claim that the bad guys live in USA.
