    Microsoft scales Windows 7's processor recognition capability in preparation for the ratio of 1:1; 1 core to every system service it will run. As if almost 150 wasn't enough in Vista... This OS better be able to make me coffee in the morning...

    If this ever really succeeds over time taking away Microsoft's gigantic market share in the desktop OS market, then IBM would achieve it's ULTIMATE REVENGE for the licensing issues Microsoft took advantage of way way back in the past. Revenge is a dish best served buggy and full of crashes :)

    Why don't you pursue a career in network engineering or administration? I'm doing that right now and sort of wishing i knew a little more programming language. I'm going back to school full time in the fall for the BS in CS. Sounds like you should get yourself into a position as a Junior Network technician somewhere, i'm sure they will take fresh meat anyday :) Of course it's a tad more physical than strict programming. There's also the server side of things. Maybe as a server technician? or a Server Administrator (systems admin type job). It honestly depends on what you are good at and where you think your talents lie.

    If the government gets desperate enough, they will just start recruiting people from Canada! It's like this... hire a ice hockey player to build your super expensive data center and keep it up 99.999% of the time! I don't believe the work is promising enough to warrant anyone pursuing a position at DARPA. I'd rather find a better over paid position at a corporation or something similar. At least you'll know you aren't the government's personal slave!

    Ha yes it is invulnerable :) ...but just like anything, the router/switch is only as smart as the person who's programming it. Be it those at Cisco with there IOS revisions or the Network Tech that's setting it up.

    that is incredibly thoughtful! i know a few people that think there the shit for wiring up there houses with cat5e or similar grade. they think there the shizz because they don't have to cut there walls up since they got it done when the house was built etc etc. well i'll be keeping this in mind. conduit will keep the rats and termites out!!!! HAHAHA!!!!

    if you want real anti-virus protection, invest in NOD32. ever since i deployed this at work recently after also getting rid of the dreaded PC Cillian, and we have destroyed any traces of viri infections and the best thing (other than it's awesome functionality) is it's ability to not take up so much freakin memory space!

    most of these comments below me are good answers but, i believe in using what you already have, not purchasing more bull on top of the bull your workin with. impliment a group policy on all the computers for a certain group and add that person to that group that's locked down. you can lock it up so bad, such as start menu lockdowns, desktop lockdowns...etc. lot's of stuff. play god and have fun!(if you are working with a domain structured enviornment anyways, but you can still lock these down using the group policy tool in windows xp)

    yea you know it. if the Zune can "share" music wirelessly, then if i had one and my good friend had one filled with tunes...i would "share" with him his entire collection...and upload it to mine. if there is some sort of licensing thing that will protect one from sharing "illegally" (as the RIAA puts it), then so be it but, i know there will be a way around it and, who's to say microsoft will become another victim of the RIAA because of it's "file sharing" features lol. i can't wait to see the posibilities of that while Apple keeps that crap out of the IPod n keeping legal :)

    omg that is so true! i was on a confrence call from my cellphone...and we use the top of the line cisco hardware runnin the voIP and, eh god i pray i never go on a conference call again lol. everyone in the meeting sounded ok untill i spoke, then my packets would interrupt packets i was trying to recieve ...and vice versa. it was all bad. (ok some of that could attest to me being on a cell phone) but then...why should that matter!? yea it's all bad. we are many years from all the good technology from catching up with reality

    M$ and there marketshare can CONTROL the market right? so why the hell not make Vista 64bit ONLY? it makes total sense right? i mean, when you upgraded from 3.1 to like say....the 9x series...you jumped from the 16bit world to the 32 bit world right? so why not do another jump to the 64 bit world. it only makes sense. then maybe we would be more compelled to adventure into the 64 bit world lol. backward compatability is Microsoft's MAIN weakness when they breed there operation systems. remember the horrors of 95 and 95a? ya exactly. this OS may have a recompiled kernel and brand new boot process...via BSD n all, but no normal person is going to care about that stuff. i remember when the sega genesis and super nindendo was all about that jazz cause they jumped from 8 bit to 16 bit. now the gaming evolution is way past 64 bit for consoles...so why not computing for the home user? every other BRAND new box retail or custom build is gonna have something beyond an X2 or a Core 2 by the time Vista does eventually come out...(the quad cores lol omg is just even more beef to deal with) so the hardware support is there. 64 bit is the future and to hold onto the past forever means death. screw the hybrids like ME lol and just GET IT DONE.

    The only reason I can see for having a 32-bit version of the OS is because Intel currently ships Core 2 Duo chips that are only 32-bits.

    Intel's Core 2 Duo line of chips are all natively 64 bit processors. ...which is all the more reason why M$ are morons for not making Vista a 64bit OS ONLY.

    for this solution, massive software isn't very viable for you. and, i usually take the approach of slicing my hard disks into partitions. of course...to me 30GB isn't much lol (i can say that now a days?), but when i make a primary for my OS and programs, and a slice for my data....redirect my default document structure in windows...and wola!! now you can worry about just maybe...making an image of your system partiton with something like Norton Ghost or whatever...and burn the raw data on the other partition containing all your music, documents, video, etc... to multisession disks, so you can readily access the data. and you can add to the disks as you see fit. the best way to go about your backups is to plan and picture how you want it to go first and foremost. but believe me you prolly don't need to go buy into 100 dollar software for your needs. now, if i worked for a large datacenter...lol then that's a whole different story. i don't think your trying to back up incremental daily and fulls once a week on terabytes of info...

    now that's the best solution i've seen in forever :P ...so next we need to teach this dude how to write up a batch file to get that done for him (on that d:) whenever he'd like to run it :) i make scripts do all the work for me. cause no one likes to sit at multiple installs...i'd rather be fixing something else right?

    A couple of things have always puzzled me with the x86 selection: why not use AMD or Sun 64 bit processors if you're moving off the PowerPC? They're cooler, lower power, and arguably better performing.

    Have you read the latest stuff on the new Intel chips? Those Core 2 Duo's are running faster and MUCH cooler clock for clock than anything AMD can contemplate. i'm sure the technology from the Conroe and Merom chips will traverse to the Xeon family (at least it would be logical)...and these will be nice in future Apple products. What would be dreamy is if Apple gained all that market that Microsoft has in the OS department...and sell OS' on the x86 arch, of course we know who will win in terms of reliability :P Of course, it's always a back and forth battle.

    damn the geek squad for not caring so much as to not at least wiping the hard drive before they parted/canibalized the parts. do those managers even seem to watch or care? well...now i work in a corporate enviornment...so yea lol. if we have a dead or whatever hard drive we don't want/cant use...we give it away :)

    building your own pc is not just some "lets put together some legos and see if it works" kinda thing most of the time. you can go out and hand pick your parts and still run across a bad say...IDE cable and not know why the hell it won't boot. those type of people need to stay away from building and just go to that retail store ...get that HP or Dell and if it breaks...you have a WARRANTY. now parts manufacturers do have there own warranties on there parts but...what common person want's to wait weeks on end or months for a part that may be defective for a fix or replacement? computers aren't cars people. yes conveniences in technology made things alot quicker but for now...leave the building to the curious and the techs like myself :) it keeps us jobs down in the future too if you think about it. i mean if all my customers knew how to troubleshoot...and fix and repair problems, i would eventually be out of a job. no one would come to the "TECH" and get it fixed cause now they're the tech. think about that one guys...
