  1. Shit or get off the pot. on Microsoft Sets Three Week Deadline for Yahoo! In Public Letter · · Score: 4, Funny

Come on, Yahoo. I think Microsoft is being reasonable here, plus offering quite a bit. Even though I'm not a huge Microsoft fan, there is a thing called common courtesy.

  2. We're garbage men/women. on The Disconnect Between Management and the Value of IT · · Score: 1

After all, we just take out the trash every day (figuratively, that is). Honestly, top management and executives could care less why the , they just want it fixed since it's hampering their business "productivity."
Maybe I'm bitter, but we are viewed as objects that do the dirty work.

  3. It's not skill. on IT Labor Shortage Is Just a Myth · · Score: 1

The problem we have here is necessarily skill or technical abilities, but ones ability to take initiative and further enhance their career. I have people who come in here and are brilliant in a certain technology, far better than me, and cannot socially function in a work environment. Furthermore, these people could care less.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not in love my employer, but I was assigned a certain set of responsibilities. It is my duty to fulfill these said duties, not complain and whine about it or do it half-assed.
Personally, I would hire someone that has the ambition, motivation, and initiative to word hard and gain more experience over someone who has more technical abilities who could care less. Just my two cents.

  4. Wow! on TSA Changes Screening Based on Blog Suggestion · · Score: 4, Insightful

You know, I'm not the biggest fan of the TSA, but I'm pretty impressed with them getting government approval and hosting a blog where they discuss this type of material. As someone who's been working for government agencies for years, this is definitely something that I haven't seen before nor would of gotten approved through multiple government agencies/directorates.

Kudos to the TSA to spend the time and resources to do something like this. It blows my mind that, in my opinion, a government agency did something practical for once.

  5. Speak up. on How Do I Become an IT/IS Manager? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Make yourself known around the upper management by going the extra mile, managing projects, stepping up to the plate, etc. These things go along way, but there's a fine line to this. You need to make sure you aren't counted on for "everything." This in turn would make you look like the go to guy for everything which will burn you out. To resolve something like this, assuming you are a senior-level person, delegate these tasks to people under you.

Like others said, make sure you aren't too technical, which could hurt you. A interest in managing and other responsibilities such as budget planning, people management, etc. go a long way.

  6. Depends on what you like. on Which IT Careers Are Hot and Which are Not? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it all depends on the person and what they like. I'm currently an IT Project Manager while dealing with managers and I can't stand it. My goal is to get another Sr. Systems Engineer/Manager position that entails working with various Operating System environments (Solaris, RH, Windows, etc.) while doing IT projects (rollouts, migrations, etc.).

Again, you need to decide on what you feel is right. Obviously, money always come into play here, but it seems like you already have a wealth of information and a broad spectrum of experience that you have the capability of going into any IT arena.

    Good luck.

  7. Interesting. on Dell's Intel Bias Caused By Under the Table Cash? · · Score: 1

This is very interesting since Dell was not putting AMD processors in any workstations or home PC's until recently. When I talked to my Dell Global Team here at my job, they basically said there was no intention of moving to the home market at that time, only in rackmount servers.

Nevertheless, Dell and Intel are very shady companies. I wouldn't put it past them at all. I even knew about slush funds for evaluation equipment from each of the main computer builders.

I think not. They have always had over-priced, flashy cases with mediocre hardware. And do you think most companies give out free hardware to get "C" grade reviews? No, of course not. This is just part of the marketing game.

  11. What's the big deal with wireless? on Next Generation of iPods to have Wi-Fi? · · Score: 1

Seriously people, what's the big deal? When I listen to my mp3, I'm not using it to surf the net or give more money to some company for music.

But this is my opinion. If I want to get something off the internet, I would being using my laptop instead of some Apple iPod. What a load of crap.

  12. You suck SGI. on SGI Sues ATI for Patent Infringement · · Score: 2, Insightful

So far, so good. I was upset my Daily Dilbert and FastFirefox Extensions weren't compatible though. :( But I like the new look and feel to it, plus it uses quite less memory.

    Good job Mozilla!

  16. Excellent Idea! on Sun To Unveil Project Blackbox · · Score: 0

I think this is an excellent idea for Sun. I've seen so many IT infrastructures that desperately needed to be upgraded yet did not have the space, funding to do construction, etc. With this project, they could do a "lease" program where companies or government agencies could borrow these boxes and run whatever they needed for a certain amount of time. Once they are done with their program, get Sun to pick it up! Way to go Sun! Hopefully this will turn their landslide into some new business. Now if only they can get rid of some of their management they have there.....
