What I don't get is how so many commenters aren't getting taken to task for comments that issues are 'rampant' on Android. I use Android and I know several other Android users. Yeah, I'm pretty technical compared to the average population (probably pretty average here) and can probably better recognize things to avoid but most of my friends/family are not. Not at all! And yet.. I don't know anyone who has ever been hit with a piece of malware or a hacker on their Android phone. I suspect if I knew people with jailbroken i-devices I would be saying the same but I just don't know anyone using one.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I think reports that exploits and malware exist are lies. It's just that from what I can see they are not rampant and the odds of getting hit by one are very low. My phone could get hit by a car too (while in my pocket). That is a much more serious threat and probably more likely. From what I can see these reports of attackers or malware being RAMPANT on Android is just the work of shills and fanbois parroting FUD.
If you are going to get any kind of smart device (smart phone, tablet, etc...) know this.. They ARE computers. You SHOULD at least learn the basics of taking care of it and protecting yourself from malware/hackers but you don't have to be paranoid or know how to build one from scratch or anything like that. If you are afraid of an Android or jailbroken iDevice just because someone told you they are particularly unsafe then relax and get it anyway. Come on in, the water is fine!
I've been looking at converters ever since the announcement of the Raspberry Pi. It looks like it's going to be nearly $100 just to use the old SVGA touch screen monitor that I picked up for free. Great! Now I can pay $100 for all the other monitors I want to continue using too?!? I think I know where they can stick those HDMI connectors. Of course that "it's smaller, thinner" comment at the beginning of the article probably sold the idea to a lot of readers.
it would probably burn through the tank long before the fuel is all gone. Not to mention, that kind of uncontroled burning would produce way more pollution than actually using it in an engine ever would have.
Dude, did someone replace your valium with caffeine today? Or were you molested by an Atmega chip as a child? You need a day off! Go get acquainted with the strange orange ball in the sky!
No. They invented the CCD. Yes, that is arguably the most important part of a digital camera but really, if you compare it to a film camera the only part the CCD replaces is the film. That's exactly what Kodak had previously made. Everything else (the optics) was what the other companies already specialized in.
As much as I hate to say it they probably should have been less open with sharing the CCD while at the same time trying harder to develop cameras equivalent to the established competitors.
But... if that's all they do then all their factories (and many jobs) become dead weight. The large corporation becomes just a small R&D shop.
And are any of their patents new anyway? Nobody should get a profit on a patent forever! The same laws of physics that make you and I possible makes their 'invention' possible. And if they didn't discover something somebody else would have eventually. Nobody should really own that but you do get a 'guaranteed' profit for a time to make discovering it worth your while. Also, new inventions build on old ones. If patents last too long then progress becomes impossible because everything new has too many patents attached to it to be practical.
To continue to exist Kodak should be expected to do something new.
Studies do show that lights reduce crime. But... what if the lights were reduced or increased everywhere at once? Maybe criminals just prefer the dark areas but that doesn't prove that they need dark areas. Maybe the when given a choice the criminals go elsewhere when they see light but would otherwise operate the same. Just a thought that can probably never be tested unfortunately.
I wonder how it effects the distance one must travel out of town to see things get better though. I would think that would be where the real big advantage would be although that is just an untested (on my part anyway) guess. I know cities with normal lights make the sky a big pink mess in their direction from many miles away. Maybe this would be different?
Also, I think we are talking about casual stargazing here. Professional astronomers or even more advanced amateurs who might actually have access to equipment that is capable of filtering colors of light will still probably head for a rural area.
Reducing the current? The Voltage is fixed, not the current. See Ohm's law. I=E/R; Current = Voltage / Resistance. A 'bulb' which uses less energy will have a higher resistance thus naturally using less current.
Yeah right. Get the American people to stop voting for the lizards? I'll do my part and vote third party (if I can find a third party that isn't running on a platform of 'the same as the other two but even more extreme'). Or maybe I'll just try to write somebody in. How do you do that anyway?
But expect enough people to actually do this that it matters? Yeah right! Most Americans feel that it is an unchangeable fact of life that either a Republican or a Democrat will be get elected to every office. They all have their ideas that one is somehow better or at least less evil than the other and that if they vote for anyone else they are 'wasting' their vote since they are voting for someone who has no chance anyway.
You say this is "something historians will find familiar". Great! So it was a temporary problem last time? When was that, how did it end, how long did it take? Any citation? I'd love to read about this, especially the part about how it got better.
Those are very low bandwidth connections. The only way you are going to get anything comparable to the kind of bandwidth we have to the surface rovers is to drag a cable.
I don't know about that one... If the fact we don't reproduce in our old age is the reason evolution doesn't select genes to give us longer lifespans then maybe having kids at an older age is a good thing.
So then there will be no selection pressure for fertility anymore.... The author says male infertility is on the rise now, just wait until this has been a common practice for about 10 generations or so. I think modern medicine is great and wouldn't trade it for the world but it's going to really trash our evolution. If this trend continues genetically engineered humans aren't going to be a controversial choice they are going to be a necessity. We will need to fix all the bad genes that are no longer selected against.
Some netbooks DO have touchscreens. And, ones that do can usually have the screen turned around and folded back over the keyboard to give it a tablet like interface. You only have to fold it the other way like a notebook when you have something longer than a twitter post to type or want easier access to special characters. I've never heard of a removable screen though. Why would you remove your screen? It sounds like it's the keyboard you want to remove.
Keyboards are only awkward if they either are poorly implemented (and many mobile ones are) or if you just don't know how to type. Good ones might take a little getting used to at the smaller size but unless you have vision problems or really fat fingers aren't bad at all. As for size/weight... It doesn't add that much! The size difference is only in thickness. Yes, I know... Thin is a huge marketing thing right now. Why? Does 3/4" vs 1/2" really make a difference? What are people doing, stacking them by the 1000s? Yes, I have an iPad but I still don't get it.
Until we have rollup displays it's not like anything with a decent sized display will fit in your pocket.
What question? All you did was make a statement?

I'd chose a rocket launched from a weather balloon
Awesome idea.. wait till these have more memory then buy one and program it to beam mp3s and movies down at the ground!

I'm in the US and this article is about Europe but I really can't tell the difference from this comment, sounds like the situation over here to me!
If that killed corporations there wouldn't be any today.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with that.

If photographers still see value in what Kodak offers then why aren't they buying their product?

They got their pork already. A few well placed pelet shots and I bet nobody would bother to replace those bulbs.
Would that really be the worst thing the government has ever sold to the people?

GW Bush? Is that you?

Actually, that rule has worked well for billions of years.
