I highly doubt that removal of otherOS was the catalyst. That has just been the excuse for why it has taken so long. Truth in matter, it took blood in the water. Some sort of moderate success and boisterous claim to get the ball rolling. Its been that way for a long time. Case in point, people are trying to say that it is a myth that Sony are responding to geohot and AMOF it is geohot who responded after otherOS was removed. The truth is, he started this before otherOS was removed and before the PS3 slim was even announced.

"'Open curiosity'
Mr Hotz said that he had begun the hack last summer when he had spent three weeks analysing the hardware.
After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking the console, which he described as a "very secure system". "
He basically outed when he started work on this in a BBC interview. So all this stuff about otherOS being the cause is a case of people trying to rewrite history to justify their actions.
I doubt Sony will re-enable anything. Chances are they could simply pull the PS3 from market. People own the hardware but not the IP. The idea that you can assert ownership just because your allowed to use it is something that doesn't fly in many other market segments, I am not sure why people think that Software must reside in a realm of its own.
Sony is not going after the people "installing" the hack. Just those distributing a modified version of their code. As a user you are free to hack the console, all you have to do is accept what goes along with it after you violate TOS/EULA/Warranty, which is normally a loss of service and support for the regular functions of the PS3.
I just said it. You COULD have put betamax into betacams and they would work. For reliability purposes sony advised against this and obviously ti no longer held true after many betacam revisions.
Beta and VHS were not compatable but believe it or not HD-DVD and Blu ray are. The difference is in the discs themselves . In those combo drives did you think that they had two different lasers? The smaller numerical aperature had no issues reading the HD-DVD disks.
Again you say they are just "different" but I have repeatedly pointed out to you that specificaly betamax and betacam were interchangable.
Blu ray is also a joint effort. So is the PS3. What ever is most convenient to bash Sony right? Blu ray became a beating stick because it was another Sony proprietary format (even though it is not) but now that it has won i wonder how long until people catch on that it was a joint process?
It was not 'Mostly Philips', even according to them it was a joint effort that it took to create the Red Book. The first was Philip and then a month and a half came sony's version.
Same thing with blu ray. Philips is the head of the BDa, Samsung released the first BD player but people still have sony on the tip of their tongues when talking about blu ray.
Theoretically they are the same. Betamax and betacam are still based off of the same tech. In the older machines you could have put betamax tapes in the cameras and used them. In later years they discouraged this use because of betacam speeds. Why do you think they share the same beta moniker.
I think a better analogy is to compare digital betacam to MPEG IMX or HDCAM. The same technology that is slightly repurposed is still the same technology.

"UMD" stand for Univeristy of MarylanD unless said hypothetical person owns a PSP."
And that's the point. There are over 30 million PSP owners out there. Thats all Sony cares about. What did you think it was a bid to take over the market? Take for instance beta......... only sony machines ha the ability to play them. The minidisc (which still has consumer grade model for sale) was their vehicle for atrac a form of lossless that other companies still use. And the UMD's are ment for PSP's only. No home players, no burners in PC. For sony it is about control not fame, So whether the average person knows what it is or not, it is irrelevant.
Beta and Minidisc were used in the professional industry ( the last beta recorder was made in 2002). And explain how umd's are a failur with more than 15 mill PSP's worldwide and growing? Didn't Capcom just sell 2 millions copies of Monster hunter..... on UMD's?
I have no Idea what CRVdisc is, I guess that must really be a failure.
And the problem in that is?
It is very simple. For some reason people get in a tizzy about proprietary media but then I sat down and thought about it. Why is it a big deal? The truth is.... it isn't. If you look at a device and it doesn't do what you want it to do, including the way you handle your own media, do not buy it.
Second of all their formats are only as successful as their hardware... because that is what they are aiming for. So all this amounts to is people trying to find a reason to hate Sony.
Most run without all the information. If you call blu-ray proprietary then you are wrong. If you think UMD has failed.... then you are wrong. If you look toward something as a "failure" then make sure it has failed both in the personal and professional markets. Step up and give valid reasons instead of promoting a beating stick.
Why is there a problem to that? First and foremost they are an electronics company. Don't like the fact that their camera's use memory sticks, or their PSP use UMD's? Don't by the hardware. It is that simple. For those who do not care, it isn't a big deal.
What I am trying to figure out is where is the hate for the DRM on itunes media, the social for the zune, XD memory?
Why is it ok to hate only on Sony for doing something that other companies do?

No, I actually research. You would have found the same info as well if you looked it up.
I love it when people use the DVD Forum to rationale HD DVD's support. What is not mentioned is that the Founders of the DVD forum pretty much all back Blu Ray with the exception of toshiba and JVC. The movie studio's on the fence claim has no merit at all and I personally think you are deluded if you believe that DL's will replace a storage medium. People seem to forget that it equates to a level of security and status.
It's lost on people. They just want to hate a company to hate. There is nothing wrong with sony trying to stop people from copying their stuff. The company they hired pushed faulty software. As a person who has used sony programs and devices for years, I can attest that normally their EULA's are in your face and pretty annoying. This case just seems out of character for the company.

"On a standard set Wii titles look better than the last gen, and offer an new, innovative, and most importantly fun experience. On a standard set, a PS3 is a $600 PS2, and a 360 is a $400 Xbox."
Seriously now! Even in SD there is nothing on the xbox that looks as good as gears of war, last planet, or dead rising and there is no equivilent to motorstorm on the PS2. The normal mapping, poly count, particles, amount of objects on the screen are just a few things you do not need an HDTV to notice.
If anyone really believes this, they need to get their eyes checked.
Why is it that people swear that the PS3 is losing exclusives? Mention wardevil, splinter cell, saints row or enchanted arms or any other game and an excuse is brought up.
They better question is to ask about the difference between perceived exclusives, timed exclusives and actual exclusives.
The PS1 and 2 were not great because of anything sony said or did. They offered a platform. The games made those systems and the same heavy hitters are back. Look at the announced titles..... look at the dated titles. Complaining about what Sony does wasn't valid when the PS2 was released why should it be important now. This internet hate has no real basis.
I agree. The two sides being presented are those who wants to keep freedom of expression "free" and those who wants to silence the voices that are harmful to unity.
I am personally on the side of free speech but who is at fault when these loudmouths hateful people meet on the internet then gather and plan on turning speech into action. There is no clear right or wrong because censorship is damaging but then violence based off of hate can also spiral out of control and damage the same society we are trying to protect.
"Now, I don't think the PS3 is a bad system simply because it's not two times better than a 360. What I'm bashing is the unrealistic hype Sony fanbois have been trying to build up. (The same way Nintendo fanbois have been unrealistically hyping the Wii)"
I understand the edge because they have been some crazy stuff said about the power of the PS3 but that fact remains that the PS3 pushes twice as many Flops as the 360. How it is used is an entire different subject. Chances are you are not going to see much of a difference in multiplatform games and that will pretty much kill any comparisons. In the long run you are going to have to compare exclusives to exclusives, in which most arguements will fail because of asthetics and game design.
"That Blu Ray drive sure is worth the extra cost. Maybe a lot of pre-rendered video will be thrown on for fun."
Sure, how much do you know about game assets? Why not taking a wild guess at how much space oblivion would take up without instanced objects and textures. Even the majority of the villagers answers are repeated (indicated by a sudden loss of access and change in voice.) You have no idea how much you will notice a huge game that can eliminate most of its instancing.
Wow! on my first post I meant that most businesses do not blindly march into markets. I made a typo but I really shouldn't have to explain that point. Maybe my posts are to log wind for you so I will wind it down. All this takes is a little research. Sony's gaming division has "NEVER' raked in over 150 million at one time in any given quarter. If you look at thier market portfolio which extends for the past 2 years you would see that they now swing TOTAL profits between 150 mill and 250 mill per quarter. Six years ago sony was a drastically smaller company The have made many joint business ventures and aquired several more companies. Profits are not oblivious to every other deciding factor in the company. Sony as a whole cost more money to maintain and Sony has spent more money in these past 6 years in R&D then they have in the past 20 years. Spin i s when you mutate facts to push your own personal agenda, You have no idea what you are talking about and are pushing googled pages in hopes that they will support your outlandish rants. IFeel free to respond but from now on I am completley ignoring you until you can bring to light evidence or an opinion that shows that you at least took the time to reaserch what you are talking about.
Textures are the only thing that has been increased? Previous games not needing space are based on three things, design price adn hardware limitations. Textures aren't the only part of the problem, biger models, more environments bigger environments, more animations per character, the reduced need to instance in game objects so forth and so on. If the dev could afford it I would like to play an rpg in which I didn't have to read 80% of the time. Not to mention the most beloved FMV's,which I haven't seen alot of recently but I do miss them.
Texture compression is a weak arguement, textures take up alot of memory (in terms of ram and sometimes 1/3 or higher) but on disk it has always been, models, sound and FMV's that took up the largest portions of space.
"Had Squaresoft backed Nintendo, they might still be Squaresoft, and they might still be producing fun games instead of barely interactive movies"
Personal opinion? I have sat down and counted out of curiousity the ratio of FMVs AND in game cutscenes to the gameplay and time to complete the game. On average the gamplay still is attributed to over 90% of the time spent on playing the game. Some people like to have areason to play a story. The long FMVs and game cutscenes help serve as a break and a reason to continue playing. What other types of games offer as much gameplay
