The second I saw NVidia articles I knew that this was just a PR thing just so that people don't forget about them after ATI's launch. I knew their product wasn't finished and they had to show *something* in development, but c'mon, you have to admit this is pretty funny. I mean--wooden screws and boards!
I've been thinking the same thing for a looong time. Why bother with a map app--point your browser to mapquest. Why bother with search apps--point your browser to google.com. I think this is just the result of great marketing and people being dumb, versus common sense.
If anything, they should make mobile browsers better and support pages better (e.g. Slashdot on mobiles is *awful*). That would solve the whole problem and eliminate the need for this junk.
The only apps I can think of that need to be apps would be something like Pandora or a Myspace. Then again I'm not sure--it could render well on Opera Mobile...
I applaud you for being one of the few/.'ers with any brains. Anybody who doesn't perform a reformat and clean install of Windows 7 is just an idiot. Period.
To all those who don't know, *NEVER* upgrade an operating system*! Always do a reformat and a clean install!
Just know this is not a study. This is a thinly veiled ad for those two game services. Notice that this is like the second or third story about them in like a week? They're starting their viral marketing in preparation for launch.
Please people mod these two game service stories down.
Am I the only one who *doesn't* want balanced classes. Part of the fun of an RPG is to make a character who is totally badass, and the best part is to find the things & select the right class which make you badass--then working and grinding for it. Prime examples:
Final Fantasy 1. The black belt was the best character, by far. Level to 50 (I think the max was 50 in that game) and do a whopping 2000 damage, even on Chaos! This was important, as the highest any other class could do was maybe like 700 IIRC (the Knight with the sword Ragnarok I think).
Final Fantasy 3. Terra, Celes, and the other two (can't remember) who could use the Atma weapon. The others couldn't even come close. Atma weapon, with 9999 health, would hit for an insane 80,0000 damage! 9999 damage each and would hit 8 times with the item that gave you double hits. A party of four and you could destroy even all the ending bosses in one shot!
That's not being a power user, that's just being silly. Don't u worry about having sensitive data stored in cache for other websites to view (simply clicking "sign out" doesn't do everything vs. exiting) or just to exit firefox once in a while to reclaim memory or to clean up garbage in memory?
The problem with/. groupthink is that since you read it everywhere, you assume it to be true. Case in point: Age of Conan.
Age of Conan is actually a really fun game. I know/. loves to bash it left and right, but this is a case where they're wrong. And it's one of the few MMO's where there is actually a story and the quests aren't "kill X monsters and fetch X roots."
3) No. The problem now is that of length. Everyone's cases nowadays can hold two video cards. Unless u buy a midsized or micro sized case, u can fit 2 cards. But all the new cards like the 285, 275, 4870x2 are all really damn long. I can fit a 8800 gts 512 in, but NOT a gtx285. It's just too long to fit in my case the way it's set up inside.
And btw actually ur wrong on the other front as well. Pop in a 285 and it takes up two PCI slots. But slightly less powerful cards only take 1. So 2 cards fit where only 1 fits.
1) New better performing cards don't always draw less power than an older single card (GTX 285 needs more power than a 8800 GTS 512). 2) Yes, they do usually make less noise and heat 3) Less space--never. Go from a 8800 GTS 512 to a GTX 285 or a 4870, check it out.
I agree with you that a single card is better for heat and simplicity (installation, drivers, & game support), but lately I've noticed that SLI/Crossfire really is the future. In some games you just can't get the framerates you want at the details you want with a single card. And it doesn't even matter with upgrading--they just don't exist. Crysis still can't run at very high at 30 fps on an HDTV (1920x1080--1080p) with a single card--even with a 285!*
Multiple GPU setups are the future now because otherwise you end up waiting probably 2 GPU release cycles to play your game *and* will have to spend tons of money on the most expensive card when it is released. *Or* you could just buy a pair of cheap GTX 260's, play your game now at the highest settings, and call it a day.
* Yes I know people will say Crysis isn't worth playing, or is poorly coded, etc., etc. But the general point stands. And if you ever played Crysis for more than the demo, you'd actually see it's a fun game and to do everything they put in, it's actually pretty card well coded. And don't tell me to lower my settings--if I didn't want to play at max settings with wonderful graphics in my games, I would have bought a console.
btw, can any of the DS's export to a TV yet (like the PSP)? I need that feature--I can't play on small screens anymore (I can get by for a little with the bigger screen on the PSP).
Yes! The PSP has this feature--check it out. This is the true "killer app" of gaming. When I first discovered and used this, I thought, "this is amazing--why has no one ever thought of this before?!" And get the PSP 3000 so if ur not a fan of playing on a small screen u can play it on a big screen tv.
I want to see PSP downloads on the PS3. I've been thinking about it. This whole making games as downloadable only for the PSP Go could be an awesome thing for the PS3...
Look at FFVII released as a downloadable game on the PSN Store. Notice anything? It's playable on both the PSP and the PS3. Now think about this. Sony has to make an effort to somehow get all the PSP games on the network to avoid its entire user base from defecting. All PSP games will be put on PSN. Think of what this means. That means that potentially, all PSP games could be downloaded on a PS3. The PSP, IMHO, has a pretty awesome and diverse library of games. Releasing these on the PS3 would greatly enhance it's library of games and contribute to its quality. This could be an outstanding outcome for those who don't have a PSP or want one, or those who desire more games to play on his/her PS3, or who want to play it on a big screen (granted you can play it on a big screen anyway via a component adapter, but still)!
Ur exactly right. That's what everyone doesn't realize. Ads won't lower the cost one cent. Not *one* game will be made cheaper, even if they are making more money via delivering ads.
The answer is simple. No more complaining & then just keep on buying like normal, just do one or all of the following 3 things:
1) NEVER buy games with in-game ads. If they are added retroactively, then: a) No longer purchase games from the developer/publisher (whoever is at fault) b) Buy a *used* copy of the game you want--never let the publisher/developer get another new sale from you. c) Speaking in Wipeout's case, if it's available only via download, see 1a.
2) Only play games with ads that are completely free
3) If it comes to it, switch to PC gaming. I'm sure that there will be an "adblock" for games if things get too ridiculous.
*** That was the worst movie, I have EVER seen. ***
It was so bad I couldn't take it. I just finished it because "supposedly" it was so good, according to sites like/. and Digg. I'm so glad I rented it, because I refused to give them any money due to the just ridiculous amount of spam adverts thinly disguised as stories on./ and Digg.
1) Rorsach or whatever the hell his name is was so cheesy. His voiceover stuff in the beginning sounded so cheesy and lame I couldn't believe there were people saying his performance was as good as Ledger as the Joker.
2) The movie just dragged and dragged. I felt like I sat there for 5 hours. It wasn't even close to that long, but it felt like it.
3) The plot made no sense. It was just superheroes running around. There was no direction or goal, and if their was, it was so poorly done I couldn't find it.
4) It was just plain dumb. I could give so many reasons, but to waste any more time of my life on that would be ridiculous. I just want anybody thinking of seeing it, that it's not even worth watching it FREE on like HBO or Showtime.
I rank this movie as bad as that loser film (with the guy from american pie) and van wilder (with that indian guy). I got up in the theater and walked out of both.
I usually respect the opinions of the people on this site, but this is one case where I forgot we're nerds, and many times nerds *don't* have good taste.
I just said that I used to be the chubby guy--as you say you were. I never said I worried about other people looking at me at the gym. I don't--never did. And as a side note, I don't care how my physique looks for other people--I only care about the results and the aesthetics of it, for myself--kinda like a person who plays an RPG to get the better/more powerful armor/sword/etc, or a sculptor molding an object out of clay. And FYI I've seen a good number of chubby girls going out with a good-looking guys.
Then again, as you get older, in the past few years, I find myself not giving a crap about farting in public either anymore lol.
I disagree. Every time I read something about science, half of the time it can be summed up as: "we were wrong--we found something new." My problem with your argument is that you have the hubris to think that we even know or can deduce how ETs operate and communicate.
In reality, if there are other life-forms that are capable of travel in space (if they even travel or if the universe even imposes limits on them whatsoever, or if they are even in this universe(s)), it will *NOT* even be close IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER to how we think they work/operate/live/communicate.
I saw this comment and I have to address some things. Only because I've realized not a lot of people actually are not aware of some some things:
1) To address you picking up people, if someone is unattractive outside of the gym, women won't talk to them either. Unfortunately, that's just how it is and there is nothing u can do about it. And ask yourself this: would you say "NO" to a sweaty, hot woman asking u out? Of course u would say yes. The sweating doesn't matter.
2) Why did you join that gym? Gyms come in 3 flavors. The meat-market (which u joined), the gym where people are serious about it and are there to actually just work out, and the "community" gym where high-schoolers and old people go. You should have joined the last 2 then. When you went for a week trial, or even just to visit, didn't you bother to look around the place? A note for you: next time your membership is up, look around at different gyms and get 1 week trials. You may find a great place, and if anything it helps because you can use the deals each gym gives u against the other for a cheaper deal.
3) Some of us actually go to workout and don't care that ur fat and sweaty. I used to be you, but now I'm not. It takes time.
4) Going because we care what people think of us... Believe it or not, some of us like to do it for health reasons and it makes us feel good. Or because we have goals we'd like to reach (e.g. x amount of bodyfat, 7-minute mile, etc.).
5) Believe it or not, you WANT to workout next to Ms. Fitness champ. They know so much advice to give you, their motivation is glowing and contagious, and generally people at that level are the most down-to-earth humble people you will meet *anywhere*.
6) The guys that are massive benching 500 lbs. are on steroids. Period. Anybody on steroids I have found also doesn't know what the hell they are doing at the gym. The only reason they look in shape is because they cheat--the needle.
7) If the gym really bothers you, get a personal trainer who comes to your house. Or get a gym if you have the space in your house. The stuff is cheap, and dirt cheap if you compare it to years of paying a gym membership.
Seriously people, instead of blaming the world for your problems, take some responsibility and *DO* something about it.
I was just thinking lately, I worry about the future of consoles. With PC DRM, the general consensus is that PCs can't play games years later because most likely the DRM servers are unavailable. It made me wonder--and now I worry about the console even more. When MS/Sony decide to pull the plug on patch support for games on XBOX Live/PSN, we're screwed. I can still play FF 1 or Dragon Warrior on my NES almost 3 decades later. And one can still find patches or a patched PC game *somewhere*. But Oblivion or GTA4 without patches from Live/PSN? Forget it, pre-patched they're broken and non-functional. And you can only get it from one source. I'm very curious as to how Sony/MS will handle legacy hardware/games when new consoles are released. Makes you wonder. In the console world, 7 years is barely more than 1 console cycle (1 cycle is typically 5). But do you think MS/Sony will still provide patch servers in *7 years*?
No, they won't. They won't let you gift games. See I can make up stuff too.
I don't think you are wise as to how businesses work. In reality, Valve will never let you gift games (free) you bought for yourself, or *sell* your games. Ever. They are not going to lose the opportunity to get a person to buy it instead of getting it for free. $10-20 is better than nothing.
1) Yes, all PC games have to be installed. I was just pointing out that many games now install to a HD. Whether you copy it for better load times or play downloadable games, where do you think they go? Is it some crazy kind of magic? And please don't even drag a *new* argument into it, like DRM, to make it sound like you are right--it doesn't work. By the way, for every *one* game with a 5-limit SecureROM install, there are hundreds of games that DON'T have it.
3) Yes, somewhat slower, but NOT if at all. Wrong. But remind me about the bugs for the 360 versions of GTA IV and Bioshock when they first were released?
4) No, I haven't. But yes, let's lump ALL games into that category because of 1 game, or even 1% of the games, that months later are still buggy!
5/6) Did you even read your reply? Your OP said just said that consoles can be hooked up to a TV for a nice living room experience. You said call me when you get local multiplayer. What did your reply have to do with it? That's right, it didn't, hence my reply. And better options? I guess that the XBOX controller, racing wheel, wireless controller, and dancepad that hook up to the PC--well they just don't exist, right? And the PC has an extra feather in it's cap--mouse and keyboard, if you want that option.
1) Just because you made a choice to purchase a laptop incapable of playing games, doesn't mean that I can't decide to hook up my PC to a TV to play games. By your logic, people shouldn't have jobs because food and shelter is available in the woods.
2) My computer is usually always on, so your argument is wrong. Even if it's off, it's in suspend mode--power on is immediate. So AGAIN, you're wrong.
3) FAIL. Again, choosing 1 game to represent thousands of games does not work. Let me guess, you're the person uses the "LALALA--I can't hear you!" argument alot.
Yea, I almost forgot about making that point--Mods. I recently got into Oblivion and back into the mod scene, something I haven't done since mods for Doom 1/2. It was amazing. I miss that feature a lot. In Doom, you could basically get all new games, missions, etc. Pretty interesting ones that developers would never think of. In Oblivion, you have the same thing. You can practically make it a new game.
To any gamer, pop in any game with a heavy mod scene, and just explore what is out there for it. I forgot just how good a feature that was, you may never leave PC gaming ever again.
The second I saw NVidia articles I knew that this was just a PR thing just so that people don't forget about them after ATI's launch. I knew their product wasn't finished and they had to show *something* in development, but c'mon, you have to admit this is pretty funny. I mean--wooden screws and boards!
I didn't know it would be *this* bad, LOL.
I've been thinking the same thing for a looong time. Why bother with a map app--point your browser to mapquest. Why bother with search apps--point your browser to google.com. I think this is just the result of great marketing and people being dumb, versus common sense.

Yes, because an IPhone is an absolute necessity...
The world of cell phones didn't exist for almost 3 decades before the IPhone...
Scary thing is you probably most people on this site consider an IPhone more important than food or a roof over their head.
