    I think TFA makes it clear that he wasn't saying "Oh gee, I didn't mean to sue you". He's saying "We wound up suing the very people we shouldn't have - an inadvertent war. Certainly it's nothing but bullshit if there is no change in tactics, but it seems to me to be a insightful admission.

    Yeah, but everything is relative. If you're fixing a Hello World application and you can't get it turned around in 5 minutes there's a problem. But if you're fixing an international banking application bug with security implications, 48 hours is definitely unreasonable.

    Indeed. In fact I currently have a blazing supercomputer on my desk, if we use the standards for the term 15 years ago. And if we use what the term meant 30 years ago - I have a computer on my desk that, frankly, I think is impossible... Can they really make them to go that fast?

    Of course we'll have a super computer on our desk in 15 years. We alway do.

    Well 'm not sure why you're concerned. A 500G hard drive now costs far less than a 100G hard drive was 2 years ago, and probably less than the 40G hard drive you're happy with. They make them larger for that price because it wouldn't be fiscally possible for them to sell a new 40G drive for the $8 it would now need to be priced at ($100/500G)

    If you're looking for an index, a document management system probably makes sense. This one is inexpensive and very good.

    That the two are inexorably linked. Innovation without invention id what exactly? The problem is that most of the CEOs that are complaining, cannot see past their 13 week (quarter) window. The real problem is there is no long term research that will lead to innovation.

    I know it's easy to view the government as corrupt and not stupid. But in my opinion it explains a lot more if you realize that the 'government', that is the bureaucrats, is made up of the people that are all around us. Which leads me to believe that the government is not nearly as corrupt as it is stupid.

    The thing I like best about this conversation, is how civil everyone is.

    I didn't do any of the things you suggest makes someone a; douchebag, amoral, unethical, belligerant (sp), imbecillic (sp), or asshole.

    Maybe if you stick to facts without the mean spirited attacks, we can actually get somewhere. No, you shouldn't ignore the attacks that come your way, but I don't think you're helping the cause.

    *Good* managers look like they're doing nothing. Bad managers are what give the bad name.

    Simply exercise self-control. Don't show somebody the right way to do something. If they ask that's different. If they're trying, allow them to learn.

    Most workers will do the task at hand without pestering. That doesn't mean you should be absent, just respectful.

    One more, and this is a biggy: Don't sweat the small stuff. If you start becoming a micro-manager, you will have reached your level of incompetence.
