  1. Re:Well we were already there on Is The Linux Desktop In Trouble? (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

Some design choices in the windows world are aggravating. To change to a static IP address via GUI, it takes more and more clicks from Windows XP, to Vista/7/8 and then on 10.

Most people I encounter want to use their applications. Among them, the majority just needs a browser. They only start to care when the small business software they bought isn't running, and this usually happens with prople that switched to Mac because they look cooler. Nobody of that type of user switches to Linux

  3. Dynamic prefixes make SOHO networking a nightmare on IPv6 Turns 20, Reaches 10 Percent Deployment (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

Ipv6 has the credo that every user should have a prefix to assign his devices (in)to. Most ISPs in Germany are stuck on the idea that the adresses should be shuffled around every reconnect. Now your name resolver has to be reconfigured each time aswell, along with services that would rely on static IPs. Any simple solutions for that besides having 2 ipv6 adresses bound to each device ?

A thing my CS professor liked saying was: "Computers are stupid, they only do thing people tell them to do". Having an understanding that a computer isn't a magic box but a machine humans developed using methods that utilize patterns that seemingly are alien to the human mind would be more helpful.

Still, some basic programming skills should help understanding that computers are bloody fast at processing repetetive tasks but still won't do anything that someone from the CS field would call intelligent.

The biggest ISP in Germany (Deutsche Telekom / T-Online) isn't openly peering at the biggest national peering point (DE-CIX) but instead is bullying everyone to directly connect to their own network.

If the other party doesn't want to pay up the packets to T-Online often get routed really strangely, often over the atlantic.

Funny thing is that the Telekom is publicly pushing for packets staying within national borders while they are the worst offenders and tech-illeterate politicians are joining up on that BS, they have been called out by tech media and the Chaos Computer Club but it didn't reach the general public (yet)
