  1. Re:Jobs killer on IBM Watson To Replace Salespeople and Cold-Callers · · Score: 1

Lol, you talking about facts. Do you understand what the data you provided means? Abusing the math a little, (I assumed that branch growth was linear), the banks fired at least one teller. There were 6.5 tellers per branch in 1992 and in 2008 there were 5.2 tellers. Since that is one person per branch, 99,109 people don't have a job. Of course, these numbers don't distinguish between full and part-time. In the state of Ohio, Diebold employees 2,000 people. I wish I could have found a company total. Again abusing the math, (assuming that Ohio is the average and big states even out small states), that makes 100,000 employees. So it is about even in 2008. (The article I got it from was about Diebold layoffs. The 100,000 number is pre-layoff.) Temper that with the fact that in 1980, there were about 12 tellers per bank. Link You and your facts.

You missed the point. This is a "for the greater good" argument. Not a single person here has said that addiction or the violence would go away. There is no reason to treat marijuana, crack, or any of the other illegal drugs different from alcohol, caffeine, or tobacco. There is evidence that the Prohibition made the addiction and the violence associated with alcohol worse. Applying that to this modern prohibition would lead to the idea that it might be better to legalize illegal drugs rather than allow this status quo to continue. There will still be addiction and violence, but there will be less of it.
Your second point falls apart. Drugs are BAD, there is no denying that. Legalization would help shed some light in those dark corners.

It may be scientifically incorrect to say gay gene, but it amounts to the same thing for a layperson. Your genes are arranged in a certain way to give you your eye color, hair color, and probably your sexual preferences. As for a citation, let's have a thought experiment. I want you to visualize the most attractive person you have ever seen, personally. Did your stomach swoop? Did your heart miss a beat? Did, at any point, you decide to have these reactions? Did you, at any time before that moment, decide that you were going to be attracted to a person that gender, with that look? No? If you had no choice in your sexual preferences, why would I? Can you even put yourself in my shoes and mean it? It is a choice, right? The next time you see a blond muscle head, can you will yourself to lose your train of thought and blush all over? It comes back to interpretations. Religions are inspired by gods, but is filtered through man. In that mindset, that we can never truly "know" the mind of god, doubt can be introduced. Was the prohibition on gays and women priests part of God's divine revelation or was it a prejudice of the period that wormed its way in? To put it another way, were these commands from God or were they a result of the corruption of men? If they were a result of corruption, they need to be excised. That the prohibitions were a corruption, is the stance that the homosexual community has taken. The Bible has been "re-translated" and "reedited" many times with many agendas involved. I don't know about the women priests supporters.

I totally agree with the idea that if you don't like something about your job, you should find something better. That is what keeps benefits like a lunch break from going away completely. There are employers that are required by state law or by the unions to have a lunch break. To remain competitive with hiring, most employers will offer a lunch break, but only the amount required by law. Non-union employers located in states without mandatory lunch break laws still offer a break, because you still can go elsewhere. The invisible hand can be forced sometimes and benefits are a great example.

You are correct in your characterization that minimum wage workers are young and relatively few. Of all workers in the US, 58% worked for hourly rates, only 5% of those work for the minimum. You are wrong about some states not having a minimum wage. Minimum wage is a federal law and applies to all states.

Minimum wage is the floor other wages stand on. If it were taken away, wages would be completely controlled by the market, which may be a good thing for employers. What about those 5%? Their wages would undoubtedly fall, because the demand for unskilled labor will always be outstripped by the supply.

By removing controls on the market designed to protect workers, I could easily become a slave. Only the law and what remains of the unions' power protects me. Why do I get vacation time? There is a law. Why do I get a lunch break? The unions require it. (Though, as the unions' power wanes, so does the length of my lunch "hour.") The humane aspects of our jobs were not put there by the free market, but by forces from outside it. Things as simple as lighting and fresh air are requirements imposed on industry. Minimum wage, which guarantees a livable wage, is a necessary imposition. How would eliminating minimum wage change employer motivations? Profit above all else. Do you think that if we eliminate minimum wage employers would cut wages and hire more people or would they just cut wages?

That approach would dissolve our society into feudalism. Slavery starts with a debt you can't pay back. If I pay a man quarter a day, but charge a dollar for the food he eats, he can never be free.
