  1. Yes on Is It Time To Stop Using Social Media? (counterpunch.org) · · Score: 1

And I did this long before all of this media storm. I am 5 months free of Facebook. Furthermore, the apology that the Zuck offered was, at best, hollow. And the denial of the shadow profiles just about undid all of that apology. I am sure I still have one somewhere on it.

I am always happy to hear when a small businessman stands up to big corporate bullies and wins. Apple has gotten greedy and it's good to see them get kicked in the balls once in a while.

  3. Cost of doing business on Some Android Device Makers Are Lying About Security Patch Updates (phonedog.com) · · Score: 1

It is expensive to provide patches so the makers of budget smartphones don't really want to be bothered with it. I am not surprised that ZTE made the list. What does surprise me is that the manufactures will outright lie and just provide a date patch. Money makes the world go round .... honesty gets thrown out with the bath water.

  4. I'm Jewish and totally okay with racist and anti-semitic speech because free speech doesn't mean free when not inconvenient. Instead of looking to other people to censor it for me, I choose to self-censor. The fact that racists are assholes is irrelevant: as long as they're not advocating violence or yelling fire in a crowded theater, let them spout off. They're less dangerous when they can vent. I hope Reddit doesn't change its policies.

We are only meant to spend a finite amount of time on this earth so you might as well do what you want, within reason. Articles like these remind me of the news filler stuff about coffee and chocolate. One day they're good for you, the next oh the horrors.

As an American citizen, I am sick of the U.S. Government being the world's bully and I really and truly hope that Britain takes action to make non-extradition a law. If the British Parliament feels the need to block extradition, then I support them 100%. The U.S. Government does all kinds of shady shit while standing on some kind of shale-based, moral high ground and it's time we get kicked in the teeth and reminded of our place.

Call this flamebait if you want, but it is my opinion that autonomous vehicles are a bad idea. I am cheering their failure. But, I feel deeply sorry for the person that was killed by the self-driving vehicle in Tempe. That is an extremely unfortunate side effect of this experiment. Autonomous vehicles are an all around bad idea from putting people out of work to safety. There are some things that should remain in control of a human being and one of those is driving.

  9. Trade wars are generally not good for the economy. As happy as I would be too stick it to the Chinese companies, I fear this will do more harm than good. I think it would be better to create incentives, and hold US companies to them, to keep production in America. Igniting a trade way under the guise of national security isn't a smart move but I would expect that coming from a president who's mental agree is that of an elementary school child.

  11. Mark Zuckerberg has been doing a lot of apologizing lately and it all sounds very hollow, back-handed, and disingenuous. The best thing that one can do for themselves is to divorce themselves from Facebook altogether. Nothing good comes from having a Facebook account. Facebook encourages you to compare yourself to others and if you aren't as successful, handsome, or beautiful as they are then you psychologically feel really shitty. Furthermore, you are giving Facebook a treasure trove of information that it sells for huge profits. You've literally sold yourself to the devil. Honestly, Google, Yahoo, Bing, and their ilk aren't a whole lot better.

  15. I deleted my Facebook account back in the beginning of November 2017. I am now 120 days free from the bullshit! There is no way I will ever go back. I hope more people join the movement to delete Facebook and lead richer, fuller lives.

For a competent hobbyist BSD or Linux user, setting up your own email server is crazy easy. And if you don't know how, there are plenty of good tutorials out there just for the searching.

This study is problematic in that it is comparing two very unlike things. Android is simply an operating system that is designed to work on a variety of different smart phone hardware designs whereas the iPhone has one singular user interface on one type of hardware. Android folks aren't necessarily wed to one smart phone maker or another. When it's time for me to replace my Android, I simply look for the best bang for my dollar. Consequently, I don't often replace my phone with the same manufacturer. A better comparison would be brand loyalty. Look at the people who might be loyal to a flagship Android brand like Samsung or LG and compare that to Apple.

I am all for free speech and opposing viewpoints until it crosses the line into advocacy for violence and abuse, whether explicit or implicit. I find it really concerning when you have a video of white patriots holding guns and making speeches against anyone that is not white. There is an implicit threat of violence and intimidation at that point. I feel that this is designed to create an environment of fear and terror. Your Salman Rushdie quote is taken out of context. He was referring to criticizing brutality and authoritarianism under the guise of a fundamentalist religion interpretation of Islam. Rushdie was criticizing the utter hypocrisy of the Ayatollahs. The Ayatollahs are nothing more than wealthy, self-indulging theocrats that claim to be devout.

  24. This is what happens when you turn to ISPs to solve the problems of the internet; more problems are created. There are plenty of ways to do this for yourself that can be found for a simple Google search. One of the problems with America is that we've stopped using the critical thinking skills that evolution gave us. You need not be a power user to search for solutions. In a former career, I was a System Admin so I simply setup an OpenBSD-based firewall/gateway/proxy out of a spare computer to replace the hunk of garbage my ISP gave me. I've created a list of all of the allowed websites and that's it.

  25. It's kind of typical. Most Americans think bad shit is gonna happen to someone else, not them.
